T. P. "A Notes BY W. H. Q. Remember that neit Saturday night is rcguar meeting night and President Harrington very much desires your presence. Come up and mako the first meeting of tha 'all and winter season an Interesting ci.e. G. A. Mendcnhall is strictly on the job as State Hotel Chairman. Numerous responses have come to him implying to his letter of "Don'ta" for hctel keepers. The boys say a number of roller towels have disappeared from Indiana hotels. The disappearance of these affairs will be a big thing for travelers. E. E. Lcbo was in Indianapolis yesterday fixing it up with bis "boss." It is with sincere regret that we are compelled to again record the death of one of Tost C's staunch friends in the person of Mrs. William Kramer. With always a pleasant word for T. V. A.'s, an active leader in social functions, almost always present at state conventions, and always having Post C's welfare at heart, we feel that in her death we have lost one of our best friends. The sympathy of the entire membership is extended to William Kramer in his hour of sadness. We are promised by the National Secretary an issue of the T. P. A. Magazine soon. This will surely be welcomed by Post C. members. For the past year new members coming in paid their dues every six months, dating from the time of their acceptance. This is now changed, new members making a short term payment at the end of six months, so ther dues will be payable July 1st and January 1st. The method . of having dues payable at various times being too confusing. The T. P. A.'s now pay $1,000 in case of death by accident of a member while riding in a passenger train propelled by steam. The T. P. A.'s are always willing In addition to trying to protect the welfare of its members, to pay as much indemnity as is consistent with good business. Have you read the National Constitution and By-Laws as revised at Philadelphia? Don't fail to acquaint a yourself with it. It Is good reading. We are pleased to see Ed Thatcher "on the Job" after a severe attack of throat trouble. John Hegger announces that he has began his fall and winter activities in attending regularly vaudeville matinees and church suppers. And when John begins he works most earnestly to not let anything of thia kind pass by unnoticed. Did you ever notice that pleasant blue necktie Lebo sports. Not only one, but many the same Bhade. Bought them 'up at Mooreland at a bargain sale a dozen for fifty cents. They blend well with his youthful years and delicate complexion of a strawberry hue. It s rumored, though we don't know just how true it Is, that we are to have some new front blinds in the club rooms. Also some new linoleum in the halls. These improvements, together with a few other minor ones would add materially to the appearance of the 'rooms. We hope President liarrlngtoji'a board of directors will get busy, that is if he succeeds in roping them into a meeting. From past records they seem to be a hard bunch to corral. There is a lot of application blanks on the secretary's desk. Put one in your pocket and get a member. You will be doing him a great favor and Incidentally push a good association along. Did you know Post C, T. P. A. has 395 members, about 325 of which live In Richmond. ANCIENT ARITHMETIC. Problems Sehoolboya Had to Solvt .. Thirty-six Centuries Age. There Is a ray of vindictive comfort for the modern schoolboy in the fact that for over U.G0O years bis schoolboy progenitors have been worried by just such problems In arithmetic as annoy him most Among the archaeological discoveries made In Egypt Is a papyrus roll, lit excellent condition, dating from nboo 1700 B. C. This roll, which had ' long heading beginning, "Direction, how to attain the knowledge of al dark things," proves beyond doubt that the Egyptians of that time bad o thorough knowledge of the element? of arithmetic. Numerous examples show that tliei principal operations with units am1 fractions were made by means of ad ditlon and multiplication. Subtraction and division were not known fn their present form, but correct result.1 were obtained nevertheless. Equations are also found in the papv rus. Here Is one that brings the Egyp tlan schoolboy home to us: Ten measures of barley are to be dl Tided among ten persons In such man ner that each subsequent person shal! receive one-eighth less than the on before him. Another example given is: There artseven men; each one has seven cats; each vat has eaten seven mice; each mouse has eaten seven grains of barley; each grain of barley would have yielded seven measures of barley. How much barley has been lost? The papyrus also contains the calcu . latlon of the area of a circle, attempts ' to square the circle and finally calculations, of the cubic measurement .of pyramids. It is said that when all seemed lost to Napoleon in 1S14 I Lie year before Waterloo he thought of suicide as an end to his career. He actually took a draft of poison, but the essential element in the concoction had lost its efficacy. He. however, conquered his inclination to self destruction, which he ever afterward held in abhorrence, even during his hopeless exile at St. Helena. When during his first consulship one of hi grenadiers killed himself Napoleon issued au order to the guards: "The Grenadier Gobain has killed himself owing to a love affair. He was otherwise an excellent' soldier. The first consul commands that the guards shouki be informed that "a soldier ought to conquer the grief and bitterness of his passions; that there is the same courage iri uluring with patience the pangs of the soul as iu facing bravely the fire of a battery.-To give oneself up to grief without resistance or to kill oneself to escape is to abandon the Geld of battle before being beaten." In a conversation with Goethe, Napoleon blamed the poet for allowing Werther to commit suicide, and in 1SK1 he said to O'Mcara: "Suicide is the act of a gambler who has lost everything or of a ruined profligate. I have always thought that a man shows more courage in supporting the evils that aSlict him than in getting rid of his life." TRAGIC IN ITS BREVITY. The Story of the Duel Between Hamilton and Burr, The story of the Hamilton-Burr duel Is tragic in its brevity. The little party of five the principals, their seconds and the surgeon was on the ground not long after sunrise. The preliminaries were soon arranged. As Pendleton, Hamilton's second, gave him his pistol he asked. "Will you have the hairspring set'?" "Xot this time." was the significant reply, and then the men faced each other. According to the best authorities upon a disputed subject. Burr fired at the word. At the report Hamilton started forward with a convulsive movement, reeled, involuntarily discharging his pistol into the foliage above him. and fell headlong. Burr, with an expression of pain upon his face, sprang toward him. but Van Ness, his second, seized him by the arm and hurried him down the bank and into their boat. Hamilton. teing lifted up. revived for a moment and gasped. "This is a mortal wound, doctor." Relapsing again into unconsciousness, he was again revived by the fresh air of the river. "Pendleton knows." he said, trying to turn toward his friends, "that I did not intend to fire at him." At 2 the afternoon following he had breathed his last. In the kitchens of the United States Military academy at West Point, X. Y., practically all the work is done by electricity.
