MARCO POLO'S BOOK. i It Gave Columbus the Idsa For His Vcyags of Diooovory. Mediaeval Europe knew but very little of eastern and northeastern Asia. Many of the most learned cosmographers of the time taught that Asia stretched eastward Indefinitely, and no one Imagined that It hod an eastern coast washed by the ocean. It was seriously taught that eastern Asia was a land of vast swamps, inhabited by monster serpents and dragons. This was tbe opinion that still prevailed up to within 200 years of the time of Columbus. At this time two Venetian merchants of the name of Polo went on a vast trading expedition to the uttermost parts of Asia. They were gone many years. Upon their return the son of one of them, a young man named Marco Polo, . wrote out a full account of their travels, described tbe empire of tbe grand khan (the Chinese emperor) and revealed the fact that Asia was bounded on tbe east by a vast ocean. He described this eastern coast minutely, with all its vast cities and Its wealth of precious stones and spfces. It was from reading this book that the imagination of Columbus was fired, and be conceived the bold idea of reaching this eastern coast of Asia by ailing toward the west around tbe artb. So when be discovered Cuba be bad not a doubt that be bad landed upon tbe coast of Asia and that he looked upon tbe same scenes that Marco Polo bad gazed upon 200 years before.
HEIGHT OF ELEPHANTS. In the Majority of Cases It Is Under Eight Feet. The average term of an elephant's life, although there is no precise Information on tbe point. Is seventy or eighty years. Tbe elephant Is not in full Tigor and strength till thirty-five. Tbe most ready way of forming an approximate idea of the age is by the o mount of turnover of tbe upper edge of tbe ear. In young animals, sometimes up to the age of eight or nine years, the edge Is quite straight. It. however, then begins to turn over, and by the time tbe animal is thirty the edge lap over to the extent of an inch, and between this age nud sixty this Increases to two Inches or slightly
more. Extravagant - Ideas are held as to the height of an elephant. Such a thing at an elephant measuring ten feet at the shoulder dees not exist In India or Burron. Sanderson, an nd niltted authority on tbe subject. sal the largest mule be ever met with measured nine feet teu Inches and th talleit female eight feet tire inches The majority of elephants, however, are below eight feet, aud an animal rarely reaches nhio feet, tbe female being slightly shorter than the male The carcass of an elephant seven feet four Inches tall weighed In portions gave a total weight of 3,000 pounds, so an elephant weighing two tons should be common enough. Tbe skin was about three-fourths of an Inch thick.

Richmond Castle. Richmond castle was originally one of the strongest of Norman keeps. It was probably founded by Alan Rufus. one of tbe sons of the Duke of Brittany, who took a prominent part in tbe suppression of 'the Saxons. At a Inter age the castle passed Into the possession of Edmund Tudor, who married Margaret Beaufort aud became tbe father of Heury VII. Henry was born Earl of Richmond, and be bestowed tbe title upon the magnificent palace wbicb wbeu king of England be built upon the banks of the Thames. Thus tbe Richmond beloved of cockneys has s comparatively modern origin. The curfew, by the way, is still rang from the tower of Richmond castle at 6 a. m. and 8 p. m.. a custom "that bas continued ever since the time of William the Conqueror." London Globe.

COMING OF CHRIST ZIOH PREOICTIOH Enemies of Voliva Announce Second Appearance in the Year, 1912. CHICAGO, Aug. IS. Four cities where the disciples of the late Alex
ander J. Dowie have established colonies received simultaneous formal
proclamations yesterday announcing the second coming of Christ in 1912. The proclamation, written in the fashion of a legal document, was filed with the county register of deeds in each of the cities. The manifesto was sent fort by the faction in Zion City which has been warring on Wilbur Glenn Voliva. It was signed by H. L. Burdette and John Taylor. Copies of the document were filed
in Chicago, Waukegan, 111., Milwaukee, Wis., and Detroit, Mich. Text of Unicue Prophecy. The text in part follws: "Be it known unto Judah, and unto Irael, and unto all the world! Before the end of the year of your Lord nineteen hundred and twelve, Jesus Christ the son of God, who was conceived of the holy spirit and born of a virgin, who was crucified, was raised from the dead, and for nearly nineteen centuries has been our beloved advocate at the right hand of God, our father in heaven, will come forth from the eternal throne, once again to teach and preach the gospel of healing, holy living, and salvation unto every crea
ture, and to heaUthe sick of every af
fliction. Jesus will come in bodily form, first to eight men, one a high priest,
whom God will ordain for the occas
ion, and seven men, to whom he will have committed the important preliminary work of the restoration of Judah and Isreal. s Revelation to Be in Zlon. 'Forty-five days later the Messiah of Israel shall be declared unto the world by the high priest chosen of God, even as the Christ was declared unto Israel by John the Baptist at the Jordan, nearly nineteen hundred years ago. "The Christ will be revealed in the
city of Zlon. built by God's foretold Elijah, as a preparation of the way unto all who shall await his coming. Even as it is written: 1 will remove the iniquity of that land in one day, so the people of Zkra who were prepared to receive the Christ, and who shall remain true to their holy covenant in these 2,300 days of sifting, shall behold their city rise again Into a new glory of righteousness and prosperity. The power of the Assyrian shall come to naught at the manifestation of God's word; in that day shall the false shepherds be cut off and he shall invite every man his neighbor under the viae and under the fig tree.
"In witness of. which wo have set hereunto our hands and seals this first day of August, 1909. -Filed August 17. 1911. H. L. Burdette, John Taylor.., Are Antl-VoUvan Leaders. Burdette and Taylor head the faction of Zionites which has been fighting Voliva for several years, and the two leaders are said to have denounced him on several occasions as being opposed to Christ. Those well ac ; quainted with the dogmatic disputes within the folds of the church founded by Dowie. read in the proclamation an attack on Voliva. - v
