The depth of the Inner canal will vary

from 86 feet to 45 feet.

There will be six double locks in the

with walls and a floor of concrete,

and mltarlnc sates at each end.

Tha aide walls will be 45 to 50 ieet

ha reaulred for the entire canal, the

Intml walshlns 67.000 tons. In the

Construction of the locks, it Is estlmat ma that 4.200.000 cubic feet of con

The number of locomotives employed will vary with the size of the vessel. The usual number required ' will be tour. The locks will be filled and emptied through a system of cuverts. The average time required to fill or empty lock will be about fifteen minutes, without opening the' valves so auddenlw as to create .disturbing currents la the locks or approaches. ' The time of passage of as vessel through the entire canal is estimated a ranging between 10 and 12 hours, according to the site of the vessel and tha rata ot speed she can travel. The time required to pass a vessel through tha locks Is estimated at three hours, one and one half hours in the lock at Oatun and about the same time in the locks on the Pacific side. " ' ' Excavation of Canal.

Tha total excavation ot the canal, web and dry. as originally planned was

ttMwwi &t 103,796.000 cubic yards,

ta addition to what the trench comtanlee did. Changes In the plans ot tH canal aaade by order ot the Preal-

VVILSOH L1AY RESIGII Also His Staunch Henchman George McCabe. WASHINGTON. D. C, Aug. 12. That Secretary Wilson may resign

and that Geo. P. McCabe will most

certainly quit odes as the result ot

the Wiley probe by the House Com

mittee on expenditures for the agri

cultural department of which Repre-1 sentative Ralph Moss, of Indiana, is

chairman, seems to be an accepted fact in .. Washington. The hearings have been suspended until next Monday. Dr. Blgelow will conclude his testimony Monday, and then Dr. Harvey Wiley will be called, after him will come Secretary Wilson.

Amons the witnesses to be called

next week the stenographer ot Dr.

Kelser, who testified yesterday that the "third degree" was administered to him by McCabe, and that his stenographer a young lady, was also subjected to a rigorous examination on

his nersonal affairs.

The committee will probably recall McCabe for further examination other witnesses may be recalled. Possi

ble the Indiana witnesses, ex-attorney

general Bingham, and Dr. Barnard, Indiana health officer, may have to come hark.

The complainants In the equity suit

brought to restrain the Indiana officers from enforcing the regulations

made by Dr. Barnard to prevent the

sale in Indiana of food products man

ufactured 'with benaoate ot soda, have

informed the committee that the testimony of the Indiana witneaaee is borne out by the record in the Indiana

case, and they may ask that they be permitted to appear and Introduce sec tions of the record to disprove the al

legations made by the Indiana men. a They may also enter an appearance in the -case through an attorney and demand that the Indiana men be recalled for cross-examination.

ters department. There have been brought to the canal zone 43,432 la

borers, of whom 11,797 came from Eur

ope, and 19.448 from Barbaaoes, ana

the balance from the other islands of the West Indies. About $12,000,000

worth of supplies are purchased an

nually, requiring the discharge ot one

steamer each day. The commissary department has 22 general stores in sb

many villages along the route of the

canal. It- is estimated that counting

the employes and their dependents.

65,000 people are supplied daily with

food, clothing and other necessities A supply train of 21 cahe leaves Cris

tobal every morning at four o'clock

and distributes supples to the stations

along the line.

A careful estimate has been made

by the Canal commission of the value

to the commission at the present time of the franchise, equipment, material,

work done, and property of various

kinds for which the United States

Daid the French canal company $40.

000,000. It places the total value at

142.799.826.

There can be little doubt with the

progress that has been made that the completion of the canal before 1915 is assured and that it will give to this

country more glory than any other

ot its achievements has since the Revolutionary war.
