Centralization in the

r.iends Church Advised Former Local Man. r i In an address at Warsaw, Indiana, before the Young Friends of America, fetigar 11. Stranahan of Frlenda college, Wichita, Kan., a farmer Richmond man and graduate of the local high school and Earlham -loliege, urged 'Centralization." Mr. Stranahan is recognized as one Of the leaders of the FrWnds, and in his address before the younger Friends, he looked into the future from the conditions of today and pointed out the possibilities of the years to come. Among other things he asked that the publishing interests of the Friends be centralized, and that tfc e rivalry between printing interests n behalf of the denomination be overcome. He Insisted that the businesr. and financial aspects of the publish Ingtmsiness be brought out a problem that should be solved by having only one authorised publishing house. He said that there had been a time not long ago when he feared for the future of the Friends church because of the apparent lack of interest on the part of the younger people, but he said he had come to the place where he could see a change among the younger members of the church. Now they have the chance to do work,

and they are doing it, not only in lo

cal communities, but in the cities. He said the young people should have very opportunity to take hold of the work of the church and that, having obtained the opportunity, they should use it. He discussed the work In cities and the possibilities there. He also made suggestions' for both home

and foreign missionary work, using

'a compact organization with one head and with officers ranging down like

the organization of an. army. And,

he said, there Is every belief that the Friends will add greatly to what they re already accomplishing. The sessions of the young Friends this year at Winona have been unusually interesting. This is the second assembly, and the two have been held at the same place, Kosciusko lodge being the headquarters. The mornings have been devoted to study, the afternoons to recreation and the evenings to special addresses by leading Friends of America.

ThoiEerly Circus. Leaving out of count the great circuses of Heme and Antloch and coming down to something of modern times, the flrst circus In England was on a footpath known as Halfpenny Hatch. There was bo building and not even s tent, but merely a rmg of ropes and stakes. Primitive as were the arrangements, Astley soon attracted good audiences and was able to add to bin program conjuring, transparencies, vaulting and tumbling, with displays of fireworks, in course of time ho was able to hire an Inclosed . ground and erected seats under a sub- ' atantial roof. Ho called the place Astt ley's amphitheater riding, house.

(Are the Statements of Richmond Citi

1(1 RAILROAD WORLD

The recent Issue of the bulletin of the railroad economics shows the pay roll of rail road employees in the aggregate was almost doubled in the years 1S00 to 1909. The total compensation to railway employes, exclusive of the general offices Increased from a little over $5,000,000,000 In 1900 to $972,000,000 in 1909 or an increase of 72.3 per cent.

According to the Pennsylvania offi

cials the freight traffice being hauled

by the road is heavy for this season of the year. The traffic in the east has fallen off slightly on account of

the prevailing low prices. On the lo

cal division the officials report that

the Richmond manufacturing estab

lishments have furnished a large out

put considering the season.

At Local Theaters

At the Gennett. The Keith Stock Company at the

Gennett this week is , without doubt

the best stock company ever seen in

this city as is proven by the capacity

houses at every performance. Mr. Keith and his company are making a reputation in Richmond that will never be forgotten. Yesterday and this afternoon they presented "Shore Acres" a play that was always seen at dollar and half prices until this season. Tonight they will present "How Women Love," a play that has a good story and one that was seen principally in large cities last year. Mr. Keith was very lucky in securing this bill for his repertoire. Tomorrow afternoon "The Peddler" will be the attraction and tomorrow night the big feature play of the week "Mam Zelle." Hundreds of people were turned away on last Wednesday afternoon when this play was given and those wishing seats are urg

ed to get them soon as possible. They

are now on sale. "Mam Zelle" is the greatest sensational play ever seen in this country at the present time Is being played with great success in Paris, France, in fact it is, a French comedy, exactly as seen in Paris.

At the Murray One of the best bills of the season is the one now playing at the Murray. The show abounds with plenty of good singing, dancing and novelties. The show is opened by Jeannette Adler in asinging and piano act. Miss Adler has an excellent stage presence and a most beautiful wardrobe. She has a beautiful voice and a choice selection of popular songs, and proves herself to be a past master of the piano. Next comes the Smith brothers In a series of exhibitions of heavy lifting. Both brothers are heavily built men with muscles of iron, and their wonderful feats have shown the limit of human endurance. Carley Carlos is a bewitching young Spanish girl who is known all over the world as the International dancer. She recently arrived in America from St. Petersburg. She introduces a series of classic which are generally regarded by the European managers as being genuine artistic acheivements. Carley Carlos bears the distinction of being one of the few Russian dancers who appeared professionally by royal command before the Czar and Czarina of Russia and other foreign celebrities. Elliot and West appear in an eccentric - dance that is entirely different from any other eccentric dancers who have appeared here. With their comedy makeup and their dance, second to none, they have sprung into Instant favor with the public. A. J. Carlos, the cartoonist, has a pretty and interesting specialty in which he draws on. a small plate glass pictures which are projected to a screen in the rear of the stage. Car-, los executes some melodious whistling while doing his work and with his

dual accomplishment rounds out a substantial hit.

Aarcde The Arcade management will have something to offer its patrons for the coming Monday and Tuesday in the way of a distinctly big feature picture, "Captain aKte," or "The Animal Trader's Daughter," illustrating the perils of the African wilds, the beasts of the jungle as they are seen in their native haunts, not as you see them in the 'circus parade. This is the headline at the Arcade for Monday and Tuesday.

A Gentle Hint. Little Bobby bad been forbidden to ask for dessert. The other day they forgot to serve him. and as Bobby is ery obedient he remained silent, although much affected. "Josephine." said the father, "pass me a plate." "Won't you have mice?" cried little Bobby. "It is very clean."

An Exception. Smith (dogmatically) There Ts no rule without an exception. BrownOb, yes, there is! There is no exception to the rule that a man must always be present while being shaved.

Cat Medicine. - The ancient physicians had a firm belief in the healing powers of different portions of the cat, probably from some confusion existing in their minds with regard to its nine lives. One of them gives as a valuable recipe to cure fevers two pints of water mixed with three drops of blood taken from the ear of an ass and certain parts of a cat's digestive organs.
