sTRS. . BORDE HAte&Isf AX. There are fads In philanthropy. Just as In everything else where the fash ionable woman is concerned. Last year and the year before it was woman suffrage, but this season It seems to be babies. In New York city a coterie of the exclusive society women have banded together to help the mothers of the poor save their babies' lives during1 the summer. Milk stations are to be established, and the $300,000 which these rich women have collected will be devoted to the work. Mrs. J. Borden Harrlman, who has been identified with many of the philanthropic movements of the smart set. is at the bead of this project. Over sixty depots are to be opened, where milk will be distributed to the poor and whence doctors and nurses will be sent to Instruct tenement' mothers hew to bring- up then children. The secretary of the milk committee, Mrs. Id Whit Parker, aoid: "Women of foreign lands In New York do not understand castas; for children here nnder totally climatic conditions. "Out of 125,000 ambles born In York city annually 16,000 die one year of ago. Of these more than 8,000 waste away for lack or food and cere. During n two heated period last summer 1.009 ba bies died.
