The United States Government will issue Its one million patent for an Invention on Aug. 1, next, and the honor will go to an Inventor who has been designated by President Taft Commissoner of Patents Edward Bruce Moore has been looking forward for some time to a celebration of the Issuance of patent No. 1,000.000. It was his hope that this distinguished number should go to some epoch making
Inventor. Several weeks ago President Taft received a letter from an Amerl can inventor saying he had perfected ! a device which he Intended to patent, and that he would like to have the honor of receiving No. 1,000.000. The president asked the commissioner to comply with the request if it were not Incompatible with the regulations of the office. Number Plaeed lr Reserve. The commissioner reported to the president that the device waa meritorious and would constitute a valuable addition to the list of American Inventions and that patent No. 1,000,000 would be granted the Inventor. The number was placed in reserve and will be officially recorded on the first issue day of August. The United States patent office will be 122 years old when the coveted number is issued. The bureau was established in 1790 as an adjunct to the treasury department. Early In 1836 ' there waa a fire which destroyed not only the building of the patent office. but every record, all the important drawings and papers and every model owned by the government. Prior to the fire the office had Issued 9,937 pat ents. First Patent on Cotton Gin. The destruction of the records com : pelted an entire reorganisation and therefore the system of numbering was started with No. 1 again. The first strictly American Inven tlon to receive a patent from the orl glnal United States patent office was the cotton gin. The patent was issued March 14. 1794, to Ell Whlteney.. The number of the Whlteney patent was not preserved. Neither was the num ber of Fulton's steamboat, for which a patent was Issued Feb. 11, 1809. Following the resumption of a reg ular system of serial numbers for patents the first Important American in vention to be granted a patent was the Colt revolver. The next great American Invention to receive a patent was the Morse telegraph Instrument. The patent. No. 1,647, was issued June 20, 1840. The patent Issued to Charles Goodyear, June 15, 1844, acknowledged his Invention of the process of the vulcvanlzatlon of India rubber. The basic patent of the pneumatic air brake was issued to George W. Westlnghouse, April 13, 1869. It bore serial number 88,929. Patent on Sewing Machine. 1 In granting to Ellas Howe his patent No. 4,750 tho patent office accorded to him the distinction of inventing the sewing machine. The patent Is dated Sept. 10, 1846. The "four motion feed." Invented by A. D. Wilson and patented by him Dec. 19, 1854, brought the sewing machine more than 84,000.000 out of this single Idea. The next Inventor to demand world wide attention through the medium of the United States patent office was Alexander Graham Bell with his telephone. There are scores of patents erlng the various parts of telephonic Instruments In the name of Bell, but the basic patents are but two. No. 174.465 was Issued March 7, 1876, No. 186.787 was Issued June 20. 1877. Quickly following upon the heels of Prof. Bell came Thomas Alva Edison. iWASCURED By Lydia E. Have Made Many Richmond Residents Enthusiastic '' No wonder scores of Richmond citizens grow enthusiastic. It is enough to make anyone happy to find relief after years of suffering. Public statements like the following are but truthful representations of the daily work done in Richmond by Doan's Kidney Pills. Dallas Cassel, 711 S. Eighth St., Richmond, Ind.. says: "About fifteen years ago I suffered from kidney trouble, brought on by heavy lifting. I was very weak and subject to dizty headaches and I thought I would never be well again. Hearing of Doan's Kidney Pills, I procured a supply at A. G. Luken & Co's Drug Store and soon after beginning their use, I felt like a different man. In July, 1906, I publicly recommended Doan's Kidney Pills and I can only add at this time that I have since had no need of a kidney remedy." For sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents. Foster-Mllburn Co., Buffalo. New York, sole agents for the fjnlted States. Remember the name -Doan's and tate no other. Edison's patent to the phonograph was No. 200,521. It was issued Feb. 19, 1878. Two year3 later on Jan. 28, 1880, he patented the incandescent light and received patent No. 223,898. A f Local Theaters At the Murray. For a good hearty laugh do not tail to see the show presented at the Murray this week. The show opens with the BeAnnos, a comedy contortonist act. Featuring Miss Laurene, the girl with the rings, her partner, the man in the box. This latter trick is one of the best and most novel of anything put on by contortionists here this season-. Next follows Frank Clayton, the comedy musical act. Mr. Clayton plays upon mony novel musical Instruments and is also a comedian of the first order. Princeton and Yale in their laughing slang comedy hit, 800 Miles from Broadway" proved to be a scream. Miss Yale as Rosie Johnson the ctranded chorus girl was a charming young girl while Mr. Jack Princeton, as Bunch Dugan "the tout" was a scream, Dunbar and Turner have an act that can make good in any house. It Is a man and woman act Both are excellent singers. Their comedy is new and clean. Their soft shoe danc ing Is neatly and gracefully executed, but the hit of the act is the finish. They both prove to be artists at the wooden shoe dancing. The rough stuff Is eliminated and the different steps are executed without any ap parent effort on the part of the artists. Their exit is a scream. Summed up In short sentence, the act is the best of its kind that has ever played here. At the Arcade. Co-operating with the Russeli Sage Foundation, Thos. Edison hos produced k moving picture entitled "A Sane Fourth." This film while told as an entertaining little romance, shows the appalling dangers to which our children are exposed on the nation's birthday. The picture, while not morbid, leaves a lasting impression, and mothers and fothers would do well to have their children see this film at the Arcade this Wednesday and Thursday. The lesson will be learned by the youthful mind more readily than by verbal warnings. HIS QUEST FOR A WIFE. John Neweemb Was a Close Observer and Was Hard to 8uit. The sister of Simon Newcomb, the great astronomer, tells In McClure's of their father's John Xewcomb's wanderings in search of a wife, whom he bad decided to select in accordance with scientific theories: "John Newcomb stopped at farmhouses for hi refreshment, and In each house. If there was a daughter of marriageable ajre. he tarried perhaps a day or even longer to make a study of the maiden. He always made himself 'handy about the place, drawing np water with the great well sweep, bringing In firewood doing anything that he could do and still keep near the daughter. "Disappointment met him at every door. At one house the rooking was poor, at another the house was not neatly kept, at n third there was scolding or faultfinding, a want of harmonyand In all the maidens a lack of desire. for learning or education. One young woman little knew ly what a narrow margin she missed her fate. All was gotng smoothly till., when she was molding the dough for the baking pans, he noticed that a considerable portion of the dough was left in the wooden kneading trough. He asked her the reason for this, and her reply was that she left it for the horse because he was fond of It. She always did this, she said; there was plenty. Want of thrift. decided the young man. and be shouldered bis bundle and walked on." Told Who He Was. Dr. Beadon, a former rector in Elthani. Kent, England, one Sunday preached from the text "Who art thou? After reading it he made a pause for the congregation to reflect upon the words, when a man In military drew who at that instant was marching very sedately up the middle aisle of the church, supposing it a question addressed to him. replied, "I am, sir, au officer of the Sixteenth reglmeut of foot on a recruiting party here, and. baring -brought my wife and family with me, I am come to church because I wished to be acquainted with the neighboring clergy and gentry. This so deranged the divine and astonished the congregation that the sermon waa concluded with considerable difficulty.

Most historios are written many years after the history was made. In these circumstances no one can step forward and dispute the historian. History is studied at school and forgotten at home. We are told to judge the future by the past, and after we read the histories we are as badly muddled as ever. Some statesmen make history, but most of them make speeches. Judge. John O'Groat's House. John O'Groat's house was formerly situated on Duncansby head, the most northerly point of Great Britain. It took its name from John of Groat, or Groot, and his brothers, who came, it is said, from Holland about 1480. The expression so often heard, "From John O'Groat's to Land's End," means the whole length of Great Britain from north to south, like the other expression, "From Dan to Beersheba," meaning the entire length of Palestine. The Important Question. "What was the matter with that customer?" asked the proprietor of the swell restaurant. He Flies Through Heavy Spume' Of the Roaring Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls. N. Y., June 2S. With the whir of his biplane motor drowned in the roar of the cataract, and man and machine momentarily obscured in spray and mist, Lincoln Beachey. the California aviator, Tuesday, after circling above the falls, swooped beneath the arches of the upper steel bridge and down the gorge almost to the whirlpool. Rising again between the sides of the lower river, Beachey soared to the Canadian side, where he made a successful landing. . It was the. first time that a bird man had cut through the air currents and mist clouds and leaping foam caused by Niagara's falls and rapids. To add to the difficulty of Beachey's flight a light rain began to fall as he took his seat in the biplane shortly before 6 o'clock. He mounted upward, moving always in the direction of the cataract, and when he crossed the American Falls he was about 2,000 feet in the air. In a great sweeping circle he swung toward the north and over the Horseshoe Falls. Down the river he flew almost to the lower steel-arch bridge, two miles below the falls, then coursed to the west and then south again, always dropping as he circled. On his second circle he went well to the west before beginning his low flight toward the upper steel-arch bridge under which he was to pass. Swinging again to the north, and traveling about fifty miles an hour, he came on probably not more than 200 A MISSISSIPPI JNTHUSIAST Mrs. Lena Gresham, of Clinton, Miss., Has a Few Facts to Tell Our Readers About Cardui. feefover the Horshoe and through its spray. Once over the cataract he lowered his plane, and. rushing with the wind at a speed estimated at 60 miles an hour, he dipped quickly under the arch. As he did so he caught some of the wash of the outlet of the power tunnel, which shoots out from the rocky side of the precipice at that point. At no time from his final dip until the time he was cleor of the structure was the biplane more than 30 feet above the spume. The space through which he flew is 168 feet in height and barely 100 feet from side to side. The distance from, the brink of the falls to the bridge under which he made the dip is about 400 yards. Beachey will report the flight tomorrow. Today's crowd was estimated at 150.000 persons.
