Out Guessing"
The public schools have closed. Earlham commencement is at hand. Another generation has gone out Into the world. We suppose that the girls and the boys; the young women and the young fellows who are graduating from the high school and the college (and others less fortunate who are leaving school and college never to return) have been properly patronized and advised. The fond parent has either felt Borry or glad and the scoffing enemy has either held the high or low grade against its possessor. Hut nevertheless school is over. The most of the plans have already been made. Some of the high school hoys are going to college or to work. Some of the college graduates are going to take a post graduate degreeor go to work.
If there la any young fellow who is feeling discouraged about anything at this time it may do him good to know that in all probability he is more uncomfortable now than ever he will be again. It Is an awful period. Once that is over things take care of themselves. Hut right now lis a pretty good time to start out to make things happen. It Isn't so much the fact that you can't get along without seeing things ahead of you but its the training of the will power that counts. There used to be a foreman of the composing room on this paper who used the word "out guess." It may not be in the chapter on "good use" in the rhetorics but it's a pretty good word to know the fuK meaning of.
The man who used the f.ord used it in no sense of chicanery or trickery. He simply applied it to the Day's Work. He had a problem. That problem started afresh every morning. At a certain hour and: minute in the afternoon the press must start and all the men under him had to have their work done on the dot. If the acidents of broken machinery; faulty composition; bad telegraph connections; the tardiness of reporters; the slowness of advertising solicitors; the trickery of electric currents went against him he was expected to have anticipated it. And he did. Otherwise the mails were missed and every man who expected his paper remembered it. The rush of Christmas advertising the summer sloth none of these things counted. The man "got by" because he had "out guessed."
There Is not the same opportunity in America for independent businesses to be founded that there once was. That is a fault or a fashion of the times. We do not run to independent businesses but to consolidation. Hut there is more work to be accomplished that ever before and the managers of businesses always aver that the number of men able to do the work is constantly diminishing.
Men liked Theadore Roosevelt quite as much because he "got by" as because he was a man of sturdy action and honesty. Hut the two things are very closely related. Men admire the quality of "outguessing" even in men that they despise. There are plenty of men who are accounted clever and 'slick that would not be trusted with people's pocket books. a Hut these men have not done a thorough Job of "outguessing" they have only taken themselves into consideration.
Yerkes who builded big and lived in palaces the man who "outguessed" everything but his monument the man who built transit lines and made fortunes over night felt retribution. And every man who apparently has "gotten away" with it knows that he has failed if he has not taken the square deal Into his "outguessing."
