Probably he would have some excuse ready so that he could go on with the experiments he had been so immersed Id during the last few days. "You're sot going out?" she said, as they sat down. "No," he said, apologetically. "1 am afraid 111 have to lie down. It's too bad of me, I know, but you won't mind going with Harding." He re-settled his pince-nes and seemed disturbed. She noticed that his face looked very yellow and wrinkled, and that his iron gray moustache drooped. "Ob, no," she said coldly. She felt she was acting very magnanimously in not being annoyed and offended. 8be had a right to be both. but In truth she was secretly pleased. It was 'La Cavalllerla" that evening, and he knew so little about music that his comments always had a provincial flavor; she was sure Max laughed at the mlnwardly. "Is It that finger?' she asked at last. "Yes, he said, absently, "I'm afraid It Is." Then she noticed that he Vas merely pretending to eat. "What a fuss to make about a little cut," she thought "Laboratories turn men into old women." ' In the bevelled glass In front of her she could see reflections, her coiffure bb dthe back of her frock. It sat very well, she thought, snd she had a pleasant feeling that she was looking at herself Impersonally. The glass also showed part of her husband's profile. Bad she could view him. too, with that pans sense of detachment. His face

She said suddenly: "You ought to go to bed if you're not feeling well. It's no use trifling with an illness." "I ' think I will," he said slowly. "Kember's coming in.' "Keraber," she thought. They'll sit together all the evening and talk about diseases of the blood. This house Is getting smothered in an atmosphere of anaesthtlcs lately." She began to grow angry at the soand at other irrelevent things. The and at other irreleventthings. The sleeve of his rusty jacket was stained, his hair was disorderly, and there was a general deadnesa about his manner. It jarred on on the light fantasy of the mood to which she had tuned herself in preparation for the opera. "Apologize to Harding for me dear." he said after dinner. "I don't think I'll come down." There was something lifeless in his voice, and the way he walked from the room carried an effect of exag geration. She looked in the glass again and arranged her frock at her shoulder. Pearl gray had always suited her; had not Max said that ever so long ago? She was half in love with the youth that shown in our own eyes and In her face, but, even as she watched it, a frown wrinkled her forehead involuntarily, and made her old. "This house is stuffy," she thought "It's like a hospital. It doesn't let me live." But In the taxi she was able to realize just the atmosphere she wanted. There was the pleasant rustling of her own dress, the flashing of lights, and the light perslflege of Harding, who sat beside her, polite and debonair. There would certainly be some people that knew her at the opera that night, and they would speculate about her companion. The knowledge of this carried with it a

Onco during a pause in the music Max said:4 "It's a pity Member isn't here. He would have enjoyed this.' ' She bit her lip and did not answer. The lights, the flashing jewels, the color and the music had carried her beyond herseld, and had given her glimpses of things that were quite beyond her power of attainment. On the waves of sound she let herself be borne along, and it seemed to her that she was deeply wronged and unappreciated. She saw herself as a tragiv figure, with an unutterable sorrow in her eyes, isolated among trivial things and people, no one knowing the splendid emotions of which she was capable. The music changed to a light and airy movement. Wine sparkled , in long-stemmed glasses, and there was a glitter of silver. She saw herself as a seductive figure, gay and Irresponsible. Vivacity flashed from her eyes, and yet there were mysterious possibilities in their depths; she leant out over moonlight balconies to breathe a delicious air of intrigue and romance. Coming home in the taxi, one thought repeated itself In her brain. " I couldn't even make him jealous of Max." She had tried once before, and he had laughed good humoredly a laugh that humiliated and exasperated her. Well, this time she would do something that would really stir him and make him realize that life wasn't meant to be squandered at bedsides and operating tables. She would force him to see the contemptible drabness of his existence. This was uppermost in her mind when she met Member in the halL until she realized that something had changed in the atmosphere around her. He was speaking with a dry and desolate scorn that was tempered only by his politeness. "I sent the girl for you an " hour ago, but I didn't know the number of

Even then in aaroxysm of grief, she had thrown herself athe bedside and was watching the saUrwistoical face, an exalted feeling iySs4ssed her. She was the wife of a hero; she wanted all the world to krjpw rhat she had gone through in the interests of humanity. It seemed to her that she had been a part of some splendid struggle against the malign pervisity of things, and that in the future she could carry out her part with more strength and power. The voice of Kember speaking to the girl outside cut across her thoughts with an unpleasant twang of reality. "Ye3, yes; half an hour ago. Don't bother me with silly questions.
