They will be calling Congressman Fln:y Gray, "the- man-better-taan-bls party" pretty soon, and history is full of the records of that class ot political failures. , True, if Mr. Gray would rise in his place in the house and give the country his reasons for balking, he would, if they were , consistent and reasonable, arouse some sympathy. But to run away or dodge voting or to ask to be excused when a question of great importance is under conslderstlon is not the way to impress the public that be is courageous or sincere." The Connersville News.

The Connersville News remarks "Even the Richmond Palladium, which worships the Shrine of Gray, la all at sea," in regard to the action of Gray's refusal to vote with the Democratic caucus. - The Palladium holds no brief for Finly Gray the Connersville News to the contrary, but it is not at all "at sea" about Mr. Gray's actions in twice refuKing to enter into the Democratic caucus. Were we as partisan as the Connersville News appears to be our Intellectual perceptions might be rubber stamped enough not to take in the significance of It. The significance of it is that Finly Gray is the only Democrat in the House of Representatives, who so far has had enough common honesty to keep his own pledges or the pledges of hl3 party. Is the Connersville News willing to Jump at the crack of a whip to any position that a party caucus manipulated by a few leaders may decide? Is it disturbed that anyone should be so revolutionary as to keep a promise or to keep free from tangling alliances?

The Republican party in the Sixth Congressional district is Democratic for the first time in its history because the representatives have betrayed their pledges and come home announcing that they could not keep them because they were bound by the caucus. This country has been befooled by partisanship. Party platforms have been ns so much waste paper because of the caucus. Representative Barnard's excuse for his actions in congress were that he thought himself under more obligations to the caucus than to his own pledgeB In his own district. . Not all that the Connersville News could do nor every other "regular" paper In the district could do- could fool the people of the district Into that sort of doctrine.

Those who wish for Republican success at any time in the future will have to fight for It on the ground that the Republican platforms mean something. They will have to fight the Democrats on the ground that they have betrayed the people. , How is the Connersville News or any other Republican paper going to fight the Democratic party on Its repudiation of its platform on the free woolen schedules (adopted for the last twenty years) if it condemns Finly Gray for standing for free wool? The Connersville News has shown tendencies at times of being independent and progressive. Its partisanship has not been so hide bound that It could not get out in Connersville and help throw off the local boss set up by Jim Watson. But how can' it operate consistently against the bossism of its own party and defend, the same thing in the Democratic party? We confess to being more at sea on this problem than as to the meaning of Mr. Gray's insurgency.

time to destroy them is now. A month

later the lush foliage of our trees In

and almost naked because the hairy

caterpillars by the thousands and even

hundred thousands were allowed to

feed upon thera at will and rob the

trees of their life-giving leafage.

Jusy why presidential elections are

eliminated does not appear, but the experiment will be worth watching, if It is tried, because ot unusual conditions existing in Wisconsin. The states in the west where equal suffrage pre

vails are small in population and have largely a native-born population. In Wisconsin there is a Tery large foreign-bom element and a much larger portion which if of foreign parentage. Most of these are Germans and Scan-

danaviana. and it will be interesting to see how these will vote on the proposal. Scandinavians In Europe are generally liberal In granting rights to women, but Germans are vastly more conservative.
