PRESIDENT KELLY MAKES STATEMENT TO LOCAL PUBLIC
If Richmond and Wayne County Will Raise $10,000 Remaining $40,000 Will Be Raised Elsewhere.
(Continued from Fase On.)
tlnns, I think, would be willing to incur a liability of .'0,(MMt for an aswt of $150,000, particularly where a good Ike of the awt was productive, and thla Is a true account of the Karlham situation. And yet no educational inatitution wlahes to carry a burden of annual Intercut. The immediate ef feet is to keep Just so much money out of educational channels; the lens ln medlate effect la to block the way to addition o the endowment, and both of thene effects pre undesirable. Already during tho pant few years the college had paid as principal and interest no Ickb than $2.,ono on this debt, leaving $.n,000 now to be rained. Thla Is tho leak that must be stopped, and wili be stopped if Karlham's friends in Richmond and Wayne county resiond as her friends elsewhere have done and are doing. Of the $2.V 000 already paid, about $3,?00 was subscribed in Richmond through tho Commercial club. "The plan is to ltegln the canvass lu the local fluid on June 12th just s month after it waa begun in the outlying territory. The campaign must close, on the evening of June 2th; the announcement of our success or failure must be made on tho morning of June 21 I cannot now say how much we will have secured by June 12, but 1 will undertake to guarantee that before the campaign closes we will deliver $40,000 in pledges from outside the local field, if the local field will deliver the other $10,000. To me this seems a fair , and reasonable proposition. I have1 not the slightest doubt but that Richmond and Wayne county will accept the challenge. There is now every reason to believe that Marlon county will contribute $8,000 to this fund before the campaign Is over. In the final round ud I think Wayne county will be the banner county. Much has Wayne county received; In the present crisis comparatively little la she asked to give."

Delegates representing the French-speaking Catholics of New England and portions of Canada assembled in convention here today to discuss the troubles growing out of the action of Bishop Walsh, of Portland in excommunicating a number of prominent laymen as a result of a dispute over the management of church property. In accordance with the provisions of the "Corporation Sole," or law governing the management of religious properties, Bishop Walsh has denied the laity the right of representation in the management of the church property. His attitude in the matter has met with strong resentment on the part of the
lay members in the, French parishesj
which are numerous throughout this section. The protestants . declare they will carry the dispute to Rome and, failing to get redress there, they will ask the civil courts to order an accounting of the church property in the Portland diecese.
