W, ROCKEFELLER IS (HEARS OLD Believed to Be the Second Wealthiest Man in the United States.
. ; ' (National News Association) Nw York, May 31. William Rockefeller who. next to his elder brother, John D. Rockefeller, la probably the richest man In the United States quietly celebrated his seventieth birthday anniversary today. Mr. Rockefeller mas born In Tioga county, New York, but removed with his parents early in bis boyhood to Cleveland and attended the public schools In that city. The faculties of perception and acquisitiveness were the most conspicuous traits in his character, when at the age of seventeen he dropped his school books and became a book-keeper for a miller. Before he was twentyone he had formed a connection with rival flour mill and had Just turned twenty-one when he became a partner In the concern. In 1864 he went into the oil business In a modest way with his brother, John D., In Cleveland. The brothers, who associated with them Samuel Andrews, a veteran In the oil business, built a little refinery which they called the Standard OH Works. This was the modest beginning of the gigantic corporation which the supreme court of the United Statea supreme court recently decided was too powerful to be permitted to exist and ordered that It be dissolved with in six months. William Rockefeller's personality, his millions and the interests with which he Is Identified, have always been overshadowed. In a measure, by the great wealth of his brother. Never theless, the wise ones in the financial world have been heard to declare more than once that William was the bralnl est member of the Rockefeller family. He has been the speculative member of the Standard Oil group of capital ists and has engineered all of the vast deals of that combination in the stock market. Since he became vice presl dent of the Standard Oil corporation many years ago be has been Intimately associated with a'l the ramifications of the gigantic monopoly, and, vwhile his name la not as conspicuous aa that of his brother, he is said to possess a wid er knowledge In detail of the corpora' tlon whose power has been spread to all countries of the world. Mr. Rockefeller has lived under a tremendous nervous strain for more than forty years. His early associates In Standard Oil he baa has followed to the grave one by one. Five of the heads of the great corporation have passed away during the last two or three years, including Henry II Rogers, whose lamentable taking off is attributed by his friends to the worry and mental strain reaulting from the government suits against the Standard Oil. That William Rockefeller has been able to withstand the terrific strain of his position Is all the more surprising when It Is remembered that more than Ave years ago cables brought word from Europe that his death waa regarded as Jmmlnent. At that time he was reported to be suf fering from an incurable malady-nothing less than cancer of the stomach and It was not believed that he could recover. Today, however, Mr. Rocke feller Is apparently as well as he has been In many years and to all appear ances be takes as keen an Interest in business affairs as he ever did. In addition to forming part of the dl rectorste of the Standard Oil and the great National City bank, William Rockefeller Is a director in a dozen trust companies and in many of the largest financial and Industrial corpor ations of America. He Is not as weal thy as his brother, but manages to worry along on the income from a for tuna estimated at between (75,00,000 Dow to Cure Your Own Kidneys A New Guaranteed Treatment The est That the Werld'a Best Kidney Specialists Could Give You. At Local Theaters At the Murray. Edward De Corsia and Company have a dandy little western skit blend ing love and comedy in a most pleas ing way. The scene opens in the studio of a Boston girl engaged in teaching school In a Texas frontier town. The room is effectively decorated with college pennants, skins and Indian blankets and relics. The school teacher has won the hearts of a minister and a cowboy, and both press their suits with typical and characteristic vigor. The cowboy resorts to strategy and the preacher to personal appeal. The girl, hearing that Red Ike, the terror of the plains, is to call on her induces the minister to make up as an Indian in an effort to frighten away the outlaw. The latter in a fit of fright, agrees. The desperado, who is the cowboy, approaches with a fusillade of shots and precipitates a panic in the studio. The mock Indian dashes for the screen and the lady almost faints. The scene following is chock full of excruciating comedy most capably handled by the trio. The play let scored a triumph last night. One morning when he went out to feed them they wero not there. They had disappeared, leaving no clew to the manner ir, which they had made their escape. "What's the matter. Uncle Eptar inquired a neighbor, noticing the deep dejection with which the old man was looking down Into the empty pen. "My hawgs is done gone, Bah," he answered. "Stolen?" This Is the first time that an exhibition of this kind has ever been attempted and there is every indication that the event will be so successful that it will be made an annual fixture. The show waa Inspired by the annual convention of the National Association of Piano Dealers, who decided to hold a private trade exhibition in connection with their annual gathering. Popular influence, however, prevailed upon the directors to make it a public exhibition and details were left to Charles H. Green, who announces that he will reveal to the music lovers of America attractions that could not otherwise be presented. "The show will be one hundred recitals under one roof." said Mr. Green. "Each exhibitor will be provided with a glass inclosed, sound proof booth of sufficient size to accommodate an audience. The musical instruments will be demonstrated by world famous artists and there will be regular programs daily. The booths will be Inclosed In order that the demonstrations will not detract In any way from the music to be provided during the show by Victor Herbert and his famous orchestra of sixty pieces. This will be the first time that the famous composer and leader has ever accepted an engagement in the west. He will give concerts during the afternoons and evenings and will introduce many new compositions which have not hitherto been played before public audi ences. "Another feature which will be un usual and entertaining will be the performance during the Herbert intermis sions of "Onalp," who presents "the Hindoo Mystery," defying the laws of gravitation by lifting, floating and revolving an upright piano and perform er through space. The total weight of the piano and performer will be 1,200 pounds. The Coliseum will be attractively decorated, the color scheme being white and gold. SHERIDAN'S RUSE.
