(National Nw AanocUtlonV Washington, May 31. Attorney General Wlckersham wai placed on the xrlll before the house committee Investigating hla depart mint today. Among tb admissions made by Wlckersham were that on several occasions before hla appointment aa attorney general he bad personally advised the United Etatea Steel corporation on legal matters. The attorney general was talkins of hit connection with the law firm of Strong and Cadwallader of New York. "Has the firm ever had any connec

tion with the Steel Trust?" asked

Representative Beall of Texaa.

'I personally hare advised the United States Steel corporation In legal

matters," Wlckersham answered. "At what period?" asked Mr. Beall , "Between 1905 and 1908, before I be

came attorney general. It waa on three or four or per ha pa five different

occasions." , Names Henry W. Taft. Answering further questions Wick'

eraham admitted that the firm had

been counsel for the New York Cot

ton'Exchange and he aald he thought Henry W, Taft, its rice president, and

.also . a member of the law Irm, waa till acting In that capacity. Wlckersham admitted Henry Taft had once represented the Sugar Trust and laid the fee Taft received had been turned Into the law firm, and that Wlckersham had received his hare, about $28,000. Rep. neall then demanded to know why the department of justice and the treasury department had accepted a $2,000,000 settlement from the sugar trust following the New York customs frauds Instead of enforcing the penalties proTided by law. Wickersham's explanation was that hla department did not believe that it had sufficient evidence, although he said the restitution was made by the sugar trust, probably because It feared the penalties would be enforced. Questioning : Wlckersham further as to his failure to collect 1r-ra nenaltlea from the urnr trust-

Rep. Beall asked the attorney general 1f the department did not have access to all records of the New York cus

toms house and that If theae were not sufficient to Justify an attempt to enforce penalties.

"I tninK tnat a s 2.000,000 settlement was the best possible arrangement," answered Wlckersham. "There was a probability of failure to enforce a large penalty," bo replied.

There were many who could get no accommodations at all, and were obliged to sleep In their machines in the garages. About fifty machines were cared for at Auto Inn last evening and 54 at the Auto Station. On Monday evening the former place cared for 44, and the lat

It is a small "'onder that physicians 1 prfseribe an alterative (blood purifier' I for so many aU. ictiors, since the blood is so intimately related with every J function of the human body.

Toisoned, or Impure blood, aside from such' manifestations as syphilis, catarrh, inflammatory rheumatism, pimples, boils, so-es, muddy complexion, etc., effects the appetitie, the digestion and the whole human organism. The mcst powerful and effective alterative known is Dr. A. B. Simpson's Vegeteable Compound, discovered by a
