EDDEM THEATER 0PEI1E0JII JAPAU Plane of Histrionic Art Heretofore Has Been on ? Low Basis.
' Toklo, Mar 28. The great event of the Mason la the opening of the first theater of the European type in Japan. Far advanced as regards all institutions of practical utility, Japan is seriously behind in the matter of modern establishments whose sole end would be to provide amusements for the Japanese or for their guests from abroad. Only yesterday, Toklo was without a modern theater. This lacuna Is now tilled. Despite Its pompous title, the Telkekuia (Imperial Theater) Is without governmental administration and receives no subsidy from the national treasury. The product of private enterprise. It will perhaps Inaugurate a new era In the social and literary life of Japan. Two reasons mainly account for Its saving been undertaken. In the first place, not only foreign residents In Japan, but tourists from other countries, whose numbers are constantly growing, and especially foreign notables entertained at the Japanese court, could not gather In any place of publice entertainment. In Toklo, aside from the everlasting geishas, before whom one squats on one's heels, people found themselves reduced to visiting placea that bore the name of theater, but were more like malodorous barns, and witnessed the miserable tragedies of the old kabuki. Poor fun, that , Japan's dignity, aa well as her good name for hospitality, was lamentably compromised. A large, fine theater became real need. Only for the Lower Classes. Unhappily by Ita origin and Ita whole history the Japanese theater Is rather lowdown Institution, at best Interesting only uneducated tradesmen. Neither the noblesse nor the intellectuals ever attend its pedformances. a they have at their command much more refined amusements, such as the "no" and the lyric dances. ii required notning less tnan trie repeated protestations of the celebrated Prince Ho to convince the Japanese that a great modernised country without theater of the European type lacked and essential cog In the mechanism of Ita social organisation. The building cost $700,000. It Is situated In the fashionable quarter of the capital, facing the foes of the Imperial palace. Although the Japanese blandly call Ita architecture "Renaissance" and tell you that It copies that Of our grandest theaters. Its outward aspect appears rather heavy to western eyes. The interior Is quite pretty, but full of defects, of which the worst Is the prosenlum arch Is so law that people In the upper balconies can neither hear nor see the performers. . Japanese and Western Art ' The mural decoration and those of e great celling are the work of AVada, who baa studied in France, and whose designs r.greeably combine our conceptions with those of the Japanese art. The stage retajns the oldfashioned scene-shifting arrangement, so that backgrounds are changed In full view of the audience without dropping the curtain Connected with the Imperial theater la the school for actresses founded four years ago by Mme. Sada-Yacco, who has now given up Its control. From this schol will come ballet dancers and young actresses who will replace the men who still play female roles. In the early days of the Japanese theater women were always to be seen on the stage; they were banished by Tokugawa for moral reasons, but have been timidly returning during the last ten years. The school for actresses means much, for It admits only girla of good family, educated and respected. It Is not necessary to go into a long preliminary talk about the show this week at the Murray. Suffice it to say that it is good from beginning to end. Jane Barber starts off the show with a lot of good singing. She is a very dainty and charming young miss with a clear soprano voice and exquisite wardrobe, and has made a decided hit with her audiences. Leslie Thurston comes billed as the Queen of the Xylophone and certainly proves her advance billing to be true. She plays with a touch second to no other xylophone player heard at the Murray this season. She has a charming personality and a good stage presence. The Four Sullivan Brothers are introducing many new and novel steps in the dancing line. Their singing is also good, as their voices blend harmoniously and they have a choice collection of new numbers. Last comes George Reno and Company heralded as headliners and well they deserve the honor accorded them, for there has never been' another act in the history of the Murray that is so successful in giving their audience a laugh from start to finish. The entranc of the Misfit Army calls forth a roar which never at any time subsides Into less than a good hearty laugh. NOTICE Decoration Day celebration at Webster will be held at Unthank's Grove. The Rev. Thomas J. Graham. of Richmond will deliver the address and musical selections will be rendered by a quartet from Richmond. All are urged to attend. 26-2t "NIXIE" APPROVED AS WORD BY NATION Chicago, May 26. The government of the United States has given official sanction to the Incorporation of a new word Into the English language. The word Is "nixie," end it appears in large letters a half a foot high on three large placards displayed in the "uncalled for" letter division of the general rostoffice of Chicago. Hundreds of curious persons saw the signs and flocked to the windows to find out the why and the wherefore. "The signs mean Just what they say. nixie.' " said the clerk. "It is a term used to designate the letters improperly addressed or which for some other reason the carriers have failed to de liver. I have been at this window for twenty-three" years and the word was in use when I came. The signs were put out yesterday as a guide for persons In search of lost or strayed let ters. "Slang? Well, possibly if you want to look at It In that way. Nevertheless It expresses the meaning that It is desired to convey, and, after half a century or so of service for the gov. ernment it should be given a place in the dictionary." TO PAINT HOME HAD TO MOVE THE PLACE St. Louis, Mo., May 26. Mrs. Emma Martin, 6423 Spencer place, St. Louis county, employed a man to paint her home. Three sides of the bouse grew radiant under the painter's brush and he carried his ladder around to the north side. Instantly Mrs. Martin's pea red on the seen with a warning pesred on the scene with a warning hand uplifted. "You can't come on my land with your ladders and paint pots," she declared ominously. The painter retreated and consulted Mrs. Martin, who admitted that the land on which the ladder would have to stand was on Mrs. Moore's. They were sister-in-laws, she explained, but had not been friends for some time. Unable to restrain Mrs. Moore through the courts. Mrs. Martin had her house moved two feet and the painting work was finished. It is proposed to spend a million dollars In paving the streets in Montreal this summer. Chief Engineer Janin also asks for $500,000 for sidewalks and $2,500,000 for sewers, drains and ths like.

"Harmless flirtations don't hurt anyone, and you know they say everyone loves a lover." . The spooning bas got to be of a mild nature. An arm along the back of a bench, or even around a trim waist, will be unnoticed, but showers of kisses and that kind of spooning will meet with instant rebuff from the park police. Chief Jones has furnished each park policeman with a pair of night glasses and a pocket flash lamp. The difference between mild and violent spooning has been explained and Chief Jones has told each officer to do his duty. Reports of the 1911 wheat crop of Indiana submitted at the closing session of the eighth annual meeting of the Indiana Millers' association, at the Denison hotel, show that the crop was never more promising of record breaking results. Though the roport showed that in comparison with last year there is 4 per cent, less acreage in wheat this year, the crop is 7 per cent, better than last year's crop. Approximately 35,000,000 bushels of wheat was harvested in Indiana last year, and it was estimated by the mil lers in attendance at the meeting that 10 per cent of last year's crop was still in the hands of the farmers. The millers said the new crop would start at an average price of 75 cents a bushel. - The improved condition in the wheat outlook in the state is attributed large ly to the awakening of Indiana farmers to the modern methods of wheat grow ing which experts from the agricultur al department of Purdue university are advancing. Continued education of the farmer, both in farming and bus Iness methods, was advocated by speakers at the meeting. AT FOUNTAINS HOTCLS. REFOREST KANSAS; TWO MILLION TREES Topeka, Kas., May 26. Western Kansas, forty years ago the heart of the great American desert, is rapidly becoming a region of forests and orchards. It is estimated that the farmers in the western half of the state are planting 2.000,000 catalpa trees this year, and the planting in previous
seasons will aggregate as many more. Generally the catalpa groves are planted along the Arkansas and Smoky Hill rivers and their tributaries, where the soil conditions are perfect for this variety of forest tress. Hundreds of iarmers along the Ar kansas valley, between Hutchinson and the Colorado line .are now setting out catalpa groves. Many are aban doning wheat and corn and other crops because of the promise of greater returns from the catalpa tree. After ten years they will be selling lumber for commercial purposes. Within six years the catalpa tree at tains a growth large enough for fence posts. After the first crop of posts LADIES: We can promise you a clear, clean skin and a beautiful complexion if you use ZEMO and ZEMO SOAP according to directions.
