From "Metal Worker, Plumber and Steam Fitter," Apr. 15, 1911. ADVANTAGES OF BRICK-SET FURNACES Have the furnace men of the United States been bo led astray by the demand for chranneea that they have absolutely forgotten there ia some benefit In having- some of the thln done rla-ht. even though at doubt the cost of cheap furnaces heallnc system? There re many furnace men throughout the country who smile when the brick furnace chamber is mentioned and do uot seem to hae an idea that It has advantages which are by no means approached In the galvanised Iron caslne even though people are now spending a arreat deal of monev to rover the galvanised Iron casing of portable furnaces with insulating material to prevent any loss of heat. Even this does not bring to the owner of the plant the advantages he could i.t from having the heating surface enclosed within a brick chamber Invariably there js much more space between the walls of the chamber and the heating surface than ts found In the average portable furnace. This prevents overheating the air. The large volume of air Is heated because the brick walls of the chamber become quite hot and this heat is retained to be absorbed by the air passing through the furnace after the. fire ha. become very low and the heating surface Itself is at a lower temperature than the walls. Furnaces of this character can b found in the older sections of the U. S. that have been in use for mora than 40 years. The younger man. who Is a strong advo.

The principal disadvan tage In the eyes of the present day buyer Is the cost but it i quite possible that the additional investment required and the Interest that the money would bring is nothing like as great as the additional coal required with some of the popular furnaces of today. The brick enoased furnace has by no means gone nut of existence. Much of the satisfaction in owning your own home is experienced in furnishing each room in a decorative scheme in keeping with the interior finish. This the man of ordinary means is not inclined to do when he does not know how long he will occupy the premises. A room finished in antique oak should be filled with antique oak furniture to match, and the drapery and rugs should also be purchased with the idea of correct harmony. This is a matter of no great moment when you know it is likely that the furnishings and furniture will likely be worn out without moving. Owning your own home, even if a loan for the greater portion of the building expense is necessary, is a wise move, and creates a saving habit that cannot fail to be a source of great satisfaction.
