Local School Boys Failed to

Make Much Showing at Anderson Meet. (Palladium Special) Anderson, Ind., May 13. Richmond high school lads failed to Ngure materially in the results of the triangular track meet held with Anderson and Kokomo schools in this city today. Kokomo .was an easy victor with 72 points. Anderson came second with 19 and Richmond finished last with 1? tallies. It was a runaway contest with Kokomo as the fugitive, and the easy victory of the representatives of that school detracted from the event to some extent. Miller, Railsback and Sieweke were the only point winners for the Rich mond team, their scores constituting the total for that school. Miller secured first place in the 220 yard hurdles after a well-run race". The halfmile run came to a close with Raits back of Richmond second. Sieweke secured second place in the pole vault The victory being the third consecu tive one for Kokomo, that school per manently retains the championship cup. The feature of the meet was the breaking of the state high school record for the 440-yard dash by Applegate, of Kokomo, who ran that dis tance in 50 4-5 seconds, smashing the record by 4 seconds, probably the largest margin in the history of the high school association. The record is far better than that made in many college state meets, and places the Kokomo lad in the first rank of quar-ter-milers. Conrad Responsible for High

Score of 672 PointsRecords Broken. in the dual track meet with Miami university held on the athletic field of the latter institution yesterday af ternoon, the Earlham college team won by the score of 67H to 36H. To Roy E. Conrad, probably the best sprinter in the country today and one of the best all-round athletes ever de veloped by an educational institution, belongs the credit for Eariham's high score and easy victory. Of the total number of points secured by the reprecentatlves of the Quaker institution 25 were won by the diminitvie Earlhamite. In all five events which he was entered. Conrad landed first place. . . The defeat of McCoy, the much touted Miami sprinter, ln the 100 yard dash by Conrad in the remarkable time or 0 4-5 seconds, and the victory of Clark of Miami over Brown, in the 440 yard event, in 60 2-5 seconds were the features of the meet Conrad Is the first college man this year to run the 100 yards in 9 4-5 seconds, 10 flat being the best previous record for 1911. The defeat of Brown who , ia considered the best quarter-mller in" the state since the departure of Denying of Wabash, from the collegiate cinder path, came as a distinct sur prise to the Earlham delegation. He led Clark, Miami's winner, until the final 100 yards, when the Oxford run ner sprinted i and beat him out by a few feet It as a hard fought and exciting finish. Two Earlham college records were broken and a Indiana state record surpassed by Stanley of Earlham. He threw the hammer a distance of 131 feet, breaking the Quaker record of 124 feet made by Smelser, which was also an I. C. A. L. mark. The Earlham record of 111 feet for the discuss throw was also broken when Stanley hurled the disc a total of 117 feet and inches. ;.,:v.rr.y Stanley was not alone In surpassing Indiana college records for Conrad added to his glory when he. hurled him self through 22 feet 4 inches in the broad Jump, going 1 V inches further than the state record held by Turk of Rose Poly. This also sets a new mark for Earlham college. Conrad easily established his su premacy over McCoy in the 100 yard dash, beating him to the rope by about three feet. His time of 9 4-5 is the best ever made with the excep tion of that made by. Weaver of the University of Michigan and Duffey of Georgetown, whose record is not offi cial, however, of 9 3-5. Having defeat ed Martin of Notre Dame, ; western conference champion of last year, ia the dual meet of last Saturday, Con rad establishes himself . as the . best sprinter in the riddle west. He will no doubt represent the United States in the Olympic contest at Stockholm next year In the 100 yard event, as several leading athletic clubs have .offered to send him if he will' join. He has announced be will join one. but has made no selection.; : . The summary of the Miami meet follows: , 100 yard dash, Conrad, - Earlhard, first; McCoy, Miami, second; time, 9 4-5 seconds. ...
