ENGLISH FESTIVAL OPEHS THIS WEEK Festival of the Empire Is the First of the Coronation Ceremonies.
(American Ntwi Hervlce) London, May in. With but four days intervening between an expect ant British public and the first of a long line of royal entertainments and celebration beginning with the Festi val of Emplr on May 14, Including the Coronation on the 22nd of June, and closing with King . George's presence at the laying of the corner stone of the Welsh National Library at Aberstwyh, July 15, all England is busy donning the gala attire with which it will greet the , hundreds of thousands of spectators, among whom will be numbered the crowned heads of Europe, their retinues, and delegations from very nation of the world, besides throngs of wealthy sightseers, who are even now flocking into London by every boat and train. Judging by the elaborate preparations and the earnest assurances of those In charge of the festivities, the coming pageants will ecUpse anything attempted in modern times and vie with the festivals of the ancients in splendor, cost and attendance. For months and months thousands of British subjects have been at work pre paring for the great events at the expenditure of many millions of dollars. London Is to be decorated as it never was before. There are to be parades, receptlous at the royal court, horse hows, friendly contests between the military of visiting nations, entertainments by the elite of England, and decorations that will astound the vlsl- . tors by their lavish magnificence. -Only Few At Ceremony. Despite the fact that the Coronation is to be the piece de resistance in this long list of events there are very, very few who will witness the actual ceremony. This no doubt will prove a keen disappointment to many who have been led to understand, that the actual ceremony of crowning the King and Queen will be open to al who have the price. Such is not the case the Coronation proper, will take place within the sacred precincts of Westminister Abbey, with only members of the royal family of England and invited guests from among the crowned beads of Europe as spectators. A seat within the great cathedral cannot be bought for love of money. ' , ' The pleblan visitor need not be disappointed, however, for he will have many opportunities to gratify his curiosity relative to this country's new sovereigns. Five times during May and June their Majesties will drive through the streets of London that all who have money for the extortionate charges demanded for seats of vantage may see, and praise of criticize, as their fancy dictates. That these same high priced window seats will be fill ed larcely by itinerant Americans is foregone conclusion, for already one can scarcely, walk a block without seeing dozens of faces and figures we'.l known on the other side of the pond. In fact so great has been the Influx of curious Americans that one prominent British newspaper confidentially asmmih that there will be more sight seers from the United States, than native English visitors from the towns
from tromanV ailments are invited to write to the names and addresses here given, for positive proof that Lydia E. Pinkham'a Vegetable Compound does cure female ills.

"BOYS WILL BE BOYS." "Now, I'll get a lickin'," said a lit tle fellow the other day. "Just look at the dirt I got on my waist." "Gee!" exclaimed his companion, "my mother wouldn't Hck me for that She says it makes boys mean to lick 'em for every little thing, and she don't mind washin' a bit when she uses Hewitt's Easy Task soap. It does half the work itself and makes, things awful clean." At all grocers five cents a cake. A i Local Theaters A Southern Romance. "A Southern Romance," a drama which, as its title implies, tells a story -of the sunny southland will be the offering of the MacLean Stock company at the Gennett tonight. This play is credited with being the finest bit of dramatic writing ever produced by an American playwright, and it invariably scored an emphatic hit wherever it is presented. In the leading part of "Carey Preston" Miss Bryant has a hole which suits her admirably and in which she is said to be irresistably charming. Scenically the piece is very beautiful. The action occurs during the season of the magnolia blooms and these flowers are used very largely In the settings. In one scene alone over a thousand magnolia blossoms are used and to heighten the effect, perfume is sprayed over them and the odor is then distributed through the entire house by means of several concealed electric fans. "; '' " ' '" Tomorrow afternoon the fine H. V. Esmond comedy, "When We Wrere Twenty-one," which was so well presented last night, will be repeated, and in the evening the laughable farce comedy, "Why Smith Left Home" will be the offering. At the Murray. ' Rozell's Minstrels are the attraction at the Murray this week and are making quite a hit with the Richmond theater goers. Nearly every one likes a minstrel especially if they have plenty of good singing, and this one with the University Four furnish plenty of it. The first part shows a scene on deck of the battleship New York. Plenty of good singing and clean comedy is introduced in this part. The olio is composed of the University Four who are all good singers and have a choice selection of songs. The Four Harmony Kings follow, playing string instruments,' brass and saxaphones are one of the big hits of the Bhow. The Waldo Bros, in a Roman ring act are also scoring a decided hit. Special scenery and beautiful electrical effects are another feature of this attraction. Watch for the parade and hear the band concert in front of the theater before each performance. PLA YS AND PLA YERS Valerie Bergere will have six sketches out next season. Albert Chevalier wants to try another starring tour in this country. Eleanor Kent is appearing in a oneact operetta called "Love vit Aeroplane." Pauline Perry has become the leading lady of a stock company In New Haven, Conn. Marie Wainright, who has been playing with William Gillette, is to return to vaudeville. Mildred Holland will go into vaudeville with a condensed version of "The Power Behind the Throne." "The Life Guardsmen" is to be produced in London by Charles Frohman and George Edwardes next season. King Alfonso of Spain has offered a prize of $5,000 to be competed for by all the orchestras of the kingdom. The Russian dancers Pavlowa and Mordkln have recently had a quarrel in London and will not dance together. May Robson will make another trip to the Pacifc coast and may not have any vacation at all this summer. Margaret Townsend is adapting a play from Frederick Townsend Martin's book, "The Passing of the Idle Rich." Cecil De Mille has recently written a play entitled "The Stampede," in which Lillian Buckingham will appear next season. H. Beerbohm Tree is out with the announcement that he will confine himself " strictly to Shakespearean plays in the future. "Madame Butterfly" has been successfully launched as a vaudeville ketch by Evelyn Millard at the Palace theater, London, recently. Henrietta Crosman recently has pro duced a play entitled "The Peacock and the Goose," which ' will be her prlaclpal play .dwug next
Run-Down Conditions --- - Their Cause and Effect. Run-down conditions are caused by
a lack of iron in the blood and malaslmilation of food. If you are one of the unfortunates who have drifted into this state, change your diet, eat foods that are rich in mineral elements of nutrition, and take Vinol, oar deli cious cod liver and Iron tonic (with out oil), which supplies iron to the blood in the most easily assimilated form. A case is reported from Mattoon. 111. Mrs. O. M. W'atrous. was in very poor health for years. She was weak, all run-down, no appetite, and only weighed ninety-seven pounds. She had doctored for a long time without benefit. Vinol was recommended. She tried it, and in less than a year she was in perfect health and weighed 127 lbs. Vinol creates an appetite, reestablishes perfect digestion and makes good, pure blood. In this natural manner it builds up the run-down, weak and debiliated, and replaces weakness with strength. Try a bottle of Vinol with the understanding that your money will be returned if it does not help you. Leo II. Fihe, Druggist, Richmond, Ind. Ivan Caryll, the English composer, iB at present working on an operetta, entitled "Sweet Pansy," which is to be produced next season by Klaw & Erlanger. "The Quaker Girl." of George Edwardes' recent London 'successes, may be seen in the United States under the management of Frank McKee the coming season. Marie Tempest is to change the name of her new play from "The Bill Toppers" to "The Star Turn," which means the same thing and pleases the London philologists better. Charlotte Walker is to appear as a stock star in Minneapolis, and will during this engagement probably be seen in a dramatization of John Fox's novel, "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine." Charles Dillingham will produce .next season, a play by Eugene Walter called "The Assassin," said to be based upon the murder of the New York Italian detective, Petrosino, some time ao in Italy. Tickling the Debtors. John Barrett was only twenty-seven years old when President Cleveland appointed him minister to Slam. Tuc first Important task which confronted the youthful envoy was to press a claim against the Siamese government for $1,000,000. Experienced ambassadors warned him against using threats in obtaining the money. "Be cunning: avoid arrogance," they said. "That is." responded Mr. Barrett, "you favor tickling with a straw to pricking with a bayonet" The statesmen nodded assent When the young minister had finally succeeded in collecting the claim' the ambassadors asked in astonishment, "How did you accomplish It?" "By tickling," explained Barrett "I had to tickle them 'almost to death, though, before they agreed to pay it." Quaint Remediaa. Among the members of the Greek church in Macedonia the following recipes are regarded ns highly useful: To pacify one's enemies write the psalm "Known In Judea." dissolve it In water and give your enemy to drink thereof, and he will be pacified. AN OLD SAYING. Showing How Cause and Effect Are Never Far Removed. It Is an old saying "Where there's honey there's bees" not less true is one which science has coined more recently, "Where there's Dandruff there's germs" and to push the inference still further we may truly say "Where there's Dandruff cured Newbro's Herpicide has been at work." The reason of Herpicide's isolation as a genuine cure for Dandruff lies in the fact that it attacks and destroys the root of the whole trouble a parasitic germ which feeds upon the material which nourishes the hair follicle. Other so-called remedies are not directed at this true cause of the disease. , Accept no substitute, there is none. Sold by leading druggists. Sent 10c in stamps for sample to The Herpicide Co.. PROMOTED THE COOK. An Error Made Him a Profeaaor of History In Russia. Some years ago the minister of education In St. Petersburg was appealed to by telegraph for a cook, to be hurried to Moscow. The operator got his dashes and dots mixed, but by next train a man arrived and was ceremoniously conducted to the university, where he was introduced to the assembled faculty and students as the new professor In history. The unhappy fellow protested that. while he might be a professor of pots and pans, he knew nothing about history. But In Russian official life it is harder far to correct an error than to make one, so for several years the cook has held his professorship, though no one attends his lectures. Another laughable story comes from the Suwalky school for boys. A doorkeeper there who could scarcely read or write had grown so untidy and slow that he was no longer useful, but as the headmaster did not want to set him adrift he promoted him to a teacher's post and had him transferred to a distant school. He, too, will be a professor some day. Moscow Letter in New York World. Particularly the Ladies. Not . only pleasant and rreshing to the taste, but gently cleansing and sweet ening to the system. ANNOUNCE DEFENSE OF DAM DEFENDER
(American News Service) ' Hayward, Wis., May 11. John Delta the' Cameron Dam outlaw hero,, who with his wife and son, Leslie, are on trial here for the murder of Deputy Sheriff Oscar Harp, centered his defense on admissions made by Capt. The outlaw forced Kane to admit that he could see no distinguishing marks on the bullet which killed Harp which would idetify it with Dietz's gun and "that bullets do strange things inside a man's body."
