From "Metal Worker, Plumber and Steam Fitter," Apr. 15, 1911. ADVANTAGES OF BRICK-SET FURNACES Have th furnace men of the United State been so tM as. tray by Ui demand for cheapness that they have absolutely forgotten there la soma benefit In having some of the things done rtcht. eveQ though at doubt tba rest of cheap furnaces heating. system? Thera are many furnace men throughout the r-ounlry who amll when the brick furnace chamber Is mentioned and do not seem to have an Idea that it ha advantages which are by no means approached In the galvanized Iron csIns, even though people ate now spending a great deal of money to cover the galvanised Iron casing of portable furnaces with Insulating material to prevent any loss of heat. Even this docs not bring to the owner of the plant the advantages he could get from 'having the heating surface enclosed within a brick chamber. Invariably there U much more space between tho walls of the chamber and the heating surface than is found in the average portable furnace. This prevent overheating the air. The large volume of air is heated because the brick wall of the chamber become quite hot and this heat la retained to be absorbed by the air passing through the furnace after the fire has -become very low and the heating surface Itself Is at a lower temperature than the walls. Furnaces of this character can be ' found In the older sections of the V. S. that have been In use for more than 40 years. The younger man. who is a strong advocate of the present day portable furnace and who lias had no experience whatever with the old brick encased furnace, might do well to took over some of its advantages. 1 have pointed out that they have been tn use for a great manv years, demonstrating that they had a durability which would tax the best cast Iron furnace ef today to meet, that they had large aic chamber and provided a large volume of air at a low temperature available for heating the building, that long arter the fire died down It waa possible for the heat in the wall of the brick chamber to keep the house at somewhat comfortable temperature until attention could be given to the fire to bring the house to a comfortable temperature. The principal disadvantage In the eye of the present day buyer Is the cost, but it 1 quite possible that the additional Investment required and the Interest that the money would bring is nothing like as great aa the. additional coal required with some of the popular furnaces ef today.- The brick en'oased furnace has by no means gone out of existence, In many places men who have been in the furnace business a long time and are familiar with its merit tecommend it to their customer and install it In that way. How often we hear a m2n say that five or ten years ago if he had put his savings into a home it would have beeen his own at the present time. A home similar to the one shown here is not expensive, and can be built by any one with the saving habit ordinarily developed, and even if reasonably priced, possesses an originality and distinctiveness sometimes lacking in properties doubly expensive. Think it over, Mr. Family man and you will be surprised at the ease with which you can acquire a home in your own right.
