One) out burnt there whs a tcrriflr explosion uwl the firing urcw hotter than ever. At times sheets of livid flame ran mIoiik the trenches of the defenders. In the street heneath the houttetops Tnlted States trooper calmly paced their homes through the ittreetn drlvI UK back the too Iri'iulfitlve and keeping nn alert look out for armed refugee from Akuh I'rleta. Trained In the hard school of the outh western forts the cavalrymen felt no fear from the nient bullets hUh at times rained into Dotiglan. Several of the shells from the Impounder with which the federals began bombarditiK Aguii I'rleta after darknrbs fell, dus up the ground near Krou-s of cavalry men on the border line. Fire, from this cannon had been directed against the rebel forces for almost an hour before a heavy, mysterious explosion shook both Ac.ua I'rleta and Douglas. American no Idlers expressed the belief that the rebel had exploded a mine. Rebels Hard Pressed. The Bring at this time Indicated that the rebels were being hard pressrd. The federals evidently massed practically their whole army of 1,600 men for the attack on the outer breast works, sweeping over them by force of numbers. Kvldently content with their results the tiring died out to desultory shots. The outlying trench fell Into the hands of the federals shortly before II o'clock after a short tierce conflict when the rebels and regulars fought hand to hand, beating each other over the. heads with their rifle butts. The federals exhibited more draperato courage In their night fighting yesterday when their army was repulsed by the rebels and driven Into the nearby foothills. Their victory In the night Rave them a decided advantage for the resumption of hostilities today. They had the trench for their protection, whereas yesterday they were compelled to fight in the open. HYPOCRITES WERE ASKEOTUTTEIID Evangelist Would Talk to Them at His Meeting This Evening. Public invitation has lteen extended to (ho hKcrltes of the city by the Rev. II. W. Miller, an evangelist eonducting the revival at the First Baptist church, to attend the services this evening at which lie promises to throw the spot light on hypocrisy. His subject, as announced on Tuesday evening, will bo "Hypocrites Skinned." and in his prelude to the announcement of his subject, he declared to those present that If any of them knew of hypocrites living in their neighborhood, whom they thought would be benefited by his address, he requested they be invited to attend. He assured everyone t!at the hypo crites would "get theirs" and judging from the reputation which he has earn cd, his auditors were not inclined to doubt the truth fullness of his declara tion. He expects a large audience to bo present. (This is not u joke; the Rev. Miller la not a Joker. J In criticism of Richmond in a pie viotts address, the evangelist said the city was like many others he had visited. The people here have not enough religion, he said. Card players have come In for some real criticism. lie also says that there are many people belonging to the church who thought all that was necessary to be come Christians was to hand in ;i curd and be "dipped." He says the church does not save Its members from hell. Those who have heard lnth the Rev Sunday and the Rev. Miller declare ' that their methods, are similar, ex cepting that Miller is not so theatrical The Rev. Miller Is a lawyer and is a resident of Chicago, but employed by a board of the Indiana Baptists' organization. PROPERTY VALUE Oil THEJCREASE Lots in Every Section of the City Being Assessed Higher.
While Wayne township assessor Charles K. Potter and his deputies are extending their efforts in the assessments of improved real estate in Richmond to equalize them, very noticeable increases have been made in the assessment of unimproved real estate including for the most part building lots. In the east end, property values have increased greatly in the past four years. Assessor Potter, reviewing the percentage of increase on assessments in building lots in the different parts of the city, summarized the results so for accomplished as follows: Kast end lots from 5 to 40 er cent; west side lots from 5 to 20 per cent; Benton Heights. Beallview and Earlham Heights 50 to 100 per cent; South Richmond, 5 to 13 per cent.. Method of Equalizing. The assessments of either improv ed or unimproved real estate is not equal to the sales value of the property. Generally the assessment is placed at from 40 to 50 per cent of the sales value. Aci-ordingly, by com pa rna the increased value of lots in the city with what they were four years a so when the last assessment of real estate was made, it can be seen how rapidly building lots value has increased within this time. To equalize the assessments of improved real estate, it has been ne cessary to raise the assessments of some and lower others while some have been allowed to stand as they were assessed four years ago. There will be little change in the assess
