This action was taken because of the fact that 34 members of the house left the state and broke a quorum of the lower house of the legislature. The action taken affects most seriously the interest, on the state debt of $320,000 due April 12. Under the holding of the comptroller and treasurer it will not be paid. They claim for their action that they are backed up by a statute on the subject prohibiting them to pay out money when no appropriation has been made. The action affects the charitable institutions of the state including the three state asylums, the Tennessee school for the deaf and dumb, the Tennessee school for the blind, and the Tennessee industrial

school.

Sweetest Girl In Paris. "The Sweetest Girl in Paris," which

conies to the Gennett's theater. Richmond, Ind., Monday, April 21th,. is freshe from a six month's run at the La Salle Opera House of Chicago. The company, scenery, costumes and chorus of this clever musical company are now exactly the same as when the piece enjoyed the favor of Chicago Chicogo audiences. In not a single detail has a heaiigo, been made, and thus Harry Askin, manager of the LaSalle Opera House, has established u newprecedent. In the history of that house. Kor the first time since the IyjiSa"le productions have been going on tour, other cities are being given the same quality of entertainment as was offered to Chicago. To accomplish this has involved large ex pen sees. The six stars who head rhe company. Miss Trixie rYiganza. Alexander Carr, Frederick V. Bowers, Zoo Burnett, Catherine Rowe Palmer, and Dorothy Brenner, receive in salaries $2,500 a week. The ten other principals and the chorus receive $1,500. Railroad fares, transfer charges, royalties to composer and librettists, advertising and incidentals ad $2,000 more to the expenses. Thus the ' total weekly evpenses of "The Sweetest Girl in Paris' aggregate $0,500 or more than $1,000 a day. In spite of these heavy expenses, Mr. Askin has found that it is worth while to be "on the level" with the playgoers of other cities. The success of "The Sweetest Girl in Paris." on tour has been so great that he intends to keep every other organization

which he sends out of Chicago' of

The tent of the Roman galley, with its horde of chained slaves; its capture and shipwreck; the raft of Arrius battling with the angry waves in mid ocean, and the rescue, wil" be found strangely realistic scenes imbued with a living quality as shown on the stage in this drama. would be a fitting setting for that otaer beautiful daughter of the Nile, Cleopatra, who long ago charmed the Roman Antony into forgetfullness of faith and duty. The appeal of "Ben-Hur." however, is not to the eye and ear alone but to

prove a distinct hit. It is undoubted-

ly one of the best musical comedies to

be seen here this season. The play catches the crowd from the time Mrs. Mrs. Newlywed appears on the stage in the first act until the curtain falls on the closing scene. Mrs. Newlywed. as portrayed by Countess Olga von Uatzfeldt. is the perfect image of the mother of Napoleon Newlywed as shown in the cartoons each Sunday. She is pretty, has a newlywed look and plays the part to perfection. Adolph Nicol, as played by George P. Murphy, jr., is the hit of the show. His many funny expressions, excellent use of the German dialect, facial expressions and songs always keep aud

iences in an uproar. His part in com

pany with pretty Miss Emory in pre

and eqnilibrists open the show and: introduce many novelties in that line.! The Bijou Comedy Trio in their nau- j tical comedy singing act introduce thej very latest ballads and character j

songs and also give numerous imitations. Teggs & Daniel, "Our German Citizen" will prove prime favorites with all. Lambs Manikins is one of the most

interesting mechanical acts in vaude-i

ville. There is a small stage, boxes and orchestra shown, in fact everything that goes up to make a miniature theater.

The Star of Bethlehem; the lonely desert; the adoration of the Wise Men; the heart-throbbing tale of the meeting of the Christ with Hur; the greetings of the great multitude with the waving cf palms on the Mount of Olives; and the final miracle of the cleansing of the lepers, are some of the incidents of "Ben-Hur" which separate it from other plays and make it stand apart from all other attractions of the theater. . While the spectacular features are phenomenal, the atmosphere is most reverent. Surely no one can leave the theater after witnessing the play without feeling that his thoughts have been lifted to a higher plane, or without carrying away an impression more endur-
