Jlawk Irf director of the department of physiologli al chemistry of that institution. Ho ha inatJn a thorough investigation, and feels that the series of rxeriments on drinking water at meal times, and on fasting, have not been equaled by any rival institution. The tests conducted here were to determine the Influence of water on the digestive systems of animals, and to determine the influence of a complete withdrawal of food from the animal organisms for periods of various length. The lasting experiments were conducted both with animals and men. Sixteen ticrif'H of experiments were
conducted. Some of the results fol-1 low: Tlie Influence of the withdrawal I of food fs much l ss pronounced the

water is taken at meal time. When water Is introduced In the t;tomach with the food there is brought about 11 n increased flow of gastric juice, thus causing the protein, constituents to be more thoroughly digested. The pancreas works much more efficiently when water la taken at mean time. The better digetilioti of the food eaten Is due directly at least in partto the Increased functional activity of the pancreas. Nitrogen partition of two men through seven-day fasts, following the prolonged Ingestion of a low protein diet, brought Interesting results. After the second day the men experienced no hunger. It was further found that there was a return to the natural condition the fourth day after the fast. In breaking the faBt, the men took the maximum quantity of food the second day after the fast, a procedure that had never been tried before. A study of thee fasting modes indicates that there la more efficient functional activity of the animal that is subjected to repeated fasting; that the animal organism ia in better physical condition after fasting than before being subjected to the complete withdrawal of food. When water la taken ut meal time there Is less intestinal putrefaction. Corioua water drinking between meals was found to bring about an increased flow in the gastric, juice and consequent better digestion.

Indon, April 10. A series of inoculation experiments on animals which may mark an epoch In the history of abdominal surgery, and is likely to human race, Is shortly to be made the basis of a new preventive treatment for peritonitis at one of the great I,omlon hospitals. The original experiments, which have been carried out at the laboratories of the Uoyal College of Physi
cians, IMiubiirgh, by Ur. L). Wilkie under a grant from the Carnegie trust, consisted of inoculating rabbits wita vaccines and other substances as a preliminary to abdominal surgical operations to let-feon or remove the danger of ptritonitis. Acute Inflamation Dangerous. The surgeon who intends to make use ci the knowledge, gained from these expciimcnts to ward off this dread complication from his patients slated: "As Dr. Wilkie points out in the record of his experiments published in the Medical Cuonklc, in spite of the great advances in recent years in intestlor.al surgery, one of every five cases in which the intestine has to be cut and joined together again terminates f;il;ill. Acute inflammation resulting from the action of germs attacking the lining membranes of the abdomen, cilher during or after any operation on the intestine, in t ie operating surgeon's chief dread. "Thi! experiments were carried out to discover, if possible, some means of preparing a patient before an abdominal operation so as to render him better able to withstand peritonitis should it occur. Rabbits previously inoculated with sina'il doses of vaccine made from bacteria combined with small doses of nuclein, were subjected to the same abdominal operation as tin inoculated rabbits, the appendix being removed in each case under ether anaothsias. "Immediately after the operation., three thousand millions of live and virulent bacteria l.such as are ordinarily found in fatal cases of human peritonitis) were injected into the peritoneal cavities of both sets of animals. The resulting deaths of the unprepared animals in a few hours from acute peritonitis and t'.ie absence of any Hi elfects in the prepared animals have lent great encouragement to the holies that similar preparatory injections may reduce the high mortalitl to lie expected when peritonitis ensues in human beings. Already apparently successful results have been obtained in a few cases in man. Our hope is that on these or very similar lines we shall shortly find the key to the treatment of that, at. present, most fatal of all surgical com plications post-operative peritonitis." '

Prosecutor of Colored Woman Not Present.
Because attorneys for the state thought that a white man who associated with a colored woman of alleged questionable morality and then accused her of stealing $f!, could not be relied on for veracity they dismissed the affidavit against Ferrist Harden, a colored woman, who has been in the Home for Friendless for several weeks awaiting prosecution. The case was called in the Wayne circuit court on Monday, with the proseettting witness. Charles lxng, absent in rortland, where he had told prosecuting attorney I. add. while the latter was on a visit to that place, he intended to stay. The defendant and a large number of negroes were in the court room. The state had planned for a jury trial and the case promised to be bitterly contested with Prosecuting attorney, Charles l.nld and his assistant It. K. Shiveley for the state and Henry 1'. Los Angeles, April 10. In one of the most amazing and remarkable
tragedies in criminal annals, .Miss Eva Hovee, 20 years old, stood at the bedside of her foster father in h ward at the county hospital and thrusting a loaded revolver into his hands compelled him to shoot her so that "she might go to heaven with him." With a Spartan-like indifference, bordering on fanaticism, the girl noted the effect of each shot and ordered the man to keep shooting until she finally dropped to the floor. As a result of the shooting S. L. Da nia. 65 years of age, the foster father is dying from wounds self-inflicted, after shooting his foster daughter and the hospital authorities state there is little or no chance for the recovery of the girl. Fought Pistol Duel. On April 1 Dania shot and killed his six year-old daughter Ledania. He believed at' the time of that shooting that he was about to die from injuries inflcitcd by George Koerner, with whom he was lighting a pistol duel. Koerner's wife had called Dania a wife heater. Dania heard the remark and an altercation followed. Doth men drew revolvers, Dania firing first. Hi3 shots went wild, but Koerner's two bullets took effect. As Dania fell he recognized his six-year-old daughter and, believing he was about to die, he said: "I am going to take you with me." and shot and instantly killed the little girl. Practically the one friend to call upon Dania in the hospital was Miss Hovee, who posed as his foster daughter. She visited him almost every day and during their conversation urged him to carry out his promise to take her with him when he died. Saturday morning she bought a revolver and last night visited Dania again at the county hospital. She forced the revolver into his hands and stood up for execution. Dania fired once, the bullet inflicting a painful but not fatal injury, striking the girl in the head. With the spirit of a Spartan she remarked "Shoot again, you didn't hurt me." The Hovee girl then crossed her hands on her breast and Dania moving to a better position, fired two shots rapidly. The second shot broke the girl's wrist, the third struck her in the breast. After the girl fell to the floor Dania turned the revolver upon himself, inflicting a throat wound. A fifth shot went wild.
Following the shooting both Dania and the Bovee girl expressed no remorse and asked to be allowed to die.
A CHANGE OF VENUE I JAIL VERY POPULAR
Petition Is Filed Other Court Proceedings.
Change of venue from Judge Fox of the circuit court is asked in a petition filed by the defendant Monday
in the ease of Charles Dcitemeyer against William S. Clendenin, damages and injunction, demand $1,500, which has been pending several months. The court has not as yet ruled whether or not he is the proper person, who should preside in the cr.se. The civil docket was called again on Monday, several motions being nifde in making up issues in eases. A few cases were dismissed including the divorce petition of Amelia Van Sickle against William Van Sickle. The differences of the two have been adjusted. The criminal case of the state ex re I Jessie Shallenburg, divorced, against John Shallenburg. alleging fraudulent marriage, the account proceeding of Joseph Mascari against Homer McLeland, and George L. fates against Rebecca J. Watt and others, also being dismissed at the defendant s costs. Motion for a new trial in the case of the Dickinson Trust company receiver for the Wayne Oil company, against Florence Downiaster and others was overruled. The defendants were stockholders of the defunct company, and the trial resulted in t hem being ordered to pay in full their stock subscriptions.
Sheriff Is Embarrassed by Number of Visitors.
One of the seven wonders of Richmond is the Wayne county jail, judg
ing from the large number of visitors at the institution who have no particular business there, even for calling on the inmates. In fact it has become such a popular place, more particularly for colored people, that Sheriff Steen and turnkey Roberts have made it a rule that hereafter only between two and four o'clock on Tuesday and Friday afternoons will the jail be thrown open for visitors. Those with important business will not be excluded at other hours. When callers are permitted at all hours, the jailer is unable to attend to any of the routine business. It was in order to permit the jailer to do his work that the rule was made compulsory. On Sunday afternoon there was a large crowd, some of whom undoubtedly wished to attend the religious services, but none were held. Sunday was the regular day for the service, but no minister appeared. The jail bad been cleaned and w as in spick and spun condition, as were also the inmates, all of whom had been ordered to the bath room and to pay a visit to the jail barber in the forenoon.

One day in wandering about they came upon a little glen they had never before visited. "And what do you call this place?" my friend asked. "Mystum," replied the old Indian. Here was a new. romantic name thnt promised possibilities. "And why do you call it Mystum?" "Well, once we saw a big buck here, and we missed um." was the reply.
