The NewParis fire fighting apparatus is being put in a more efficient condition. Patent harness, etc., has been bought and will be installed in the fire house where other changes will be made. When thisis done a horse will be used to pull the fire wagon, thus relieving members of the company of this very exhausting labor as well as making it possible to get it to the fire in shorter time. A horse from the livery stable will be used. The fire department has always done splendid work and it will thus be made more efficient. The county commissioners have viewed the proposed Fudge ditch in the south part of town and there seems to be no doubt but that it will be put in thereby affording proper drainage for that part of town. Mrs. Halderman of Camden is visiting her sister. Mrs. Susan Miller this week. Within a short time signs will be. placed on the several roads entering New- Paris calling attention to the city limits and admonishing auto drivers to "slow down" to the speed of eight miles an hour required by the state law. Several children have barely escaped being run down bv reckless autoists and the action of council in ordering the signs is in the line of public safety. It may be necessary to arrest and fine fellows before the law is obeyed. James Weeks, the well known veteran, is an inmate of the National Soldiers' Home at Johnson. Tenn. Mrs. J. F. Gehring has returned after two weeks' spent at the Spiceland Sanitarium. The storm which visited this sestion Tuesday night, damaged the Pennville school building, a brick structurt, blowing in the front gable end, and unroofing a barn nearby. The farm occupied my Ora Wagner, and the adjoining farm of Ross Hosier, which lay in the direct path of storm, suffered most from the devastation. The roof of the Hosier barn was blown into a nearby field, while the Wagner residence was lifted from the foundation, and set down again upon the walls, without apparent damage. Forty hogs, two cows, and four horses in the barn escaped uninjured. So much rain has fallen the past fewdays, that farmers can not work to any advantage. Mrs. F. F. Frohnapfel, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Charles Rink have gone to French Lick, for a ten days' stay. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Calloway had as their guests at dinner Tuesday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Ogborn, and Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Scudder. Mrs. R. M. Miss Eunice McClung visited at Richmond yesterday and shopped. The property on West Main street belonging to the estate of the late Mrs. Mary J. Booth was exposed at public sale by the executor of the will, O. II. Beeson, yesterday afternoon. The bidders were township assessor, George Crull of east of town, G. B. Bryant, Lute Lantz, Jr., and L. R. Gresh. The auctioneer was Col. Wr. A. Flannagan of Connersville. The property was sold to L. R. Gresh for $535. Mr. GreBh has been the tenant for some years. Mrs. John Newbold, near Straughn, visited her sister, Mrs. G. B. Bryant yesterday. The Sunday excursions to r. Wayne" over the Lake Erie and Western begin Sunday. Mrs. Iangston has been for several years the faithful and efficient organist of the M. E. church. William Berry who is in charge of the Riverside flour mills wagon has been sick. Watson Faucet t is in charge while Mr. Berry cannot he there. He went to New Castle yesterday with a load. O. L. Beeson sold 46 head of hogs to Mr. Hartman yesterday. They averaged 22S. pounds weight. He received $6.50 per hundred. A year ago the coining May he received $9.30. Miss Peters who was to have addressed the people of Doddridge chapel on missions Sunday morning phoned Rev. Mr. Pinnick from Connersville that she was sick and would have to recall her appointment. Mrs. Hattie Heist writes from Arcadia that her brother-in-law, John Noble is no better. He has been much worse. Cannon Sella returned Wednesday evening from a two weeks trip to North Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Marshall moved from Tide water Thursday to Mrs. Mary Hindeman's property on South Plum 'street. Mrs. R. C. Small entertained the Progressive club Wednesday afternoon at her home on West Market street. There were thirteen members present and three guests, namely, Mrs. Ora Wheeler, Mrs. Robert Thurston and Mrs. Lee J. Reynolds. The afternoon was spent with a musical and literary program which was very interesting. At the close of the program all participated in a "theatrical" contest in which Mrs. A. R. Jones displayed the most efficiency of knowledge of what is seen at the theater. Mrs. Jones was presented with a box of bon-bons. A delicious luncheon followed the contest with Easter egg candies as favors. Mrs. Small proved herself to be a most pleasing hostess.
