A WOMAN WILL BE TRIED JFORMURDER For First Time in Many Years in Texas Such Case Is to Be Tried.
(American Nw Mt-rvlrt) Fort Worth, Texas, March 30. For the fir tit time in many years a woman charged with murder in the first degree is to be placed on trial in this city next Monday. The defendant in the case is Mrs. T. M. Hrooks, wife of a prominent attorney, and her trial. Upon the charge of having allot and tilled Mrs. Mary Iiinrord, department manager of a local dry Roods store Is to begin next Monday in the Sixtyseventh District court. The crime with which Mrs. Hrooks Is charged watt committed on January 16 of this year and is believed to have been prompted by jealousy. Neither Mrs. Hrooka nor her husband have shown any inclination to make a statement that would indicate the cause of tho tragedy, but for Home time there have been rumors strongly hlntliiK that Mrs. Hrooks did not. live happily with her husband and that she believed her hushand'a affections had been ulienated by Mrs. Hinford, who was divorced about two years ago and was considered a rather fascinating and handsome woman. It Is expected that at the coming trial some light will be thrown iioii the relations between the defendant and ber husband and between the laiter nd the victim of the tragedy and this prospect has greatly Intensified the public Interest In the case. Whatever may have been the marital complications, whether Mrs. Brooks' Jealousy was well founded or based merely upon a tissue of her own Imagination, Is still a mystery. At all events however It seemed real enough to the defendant at the time of her desperate deed. Armed with a big, old fashioned revolver, Mra. Hrooks, on the afternoon of January 16, made her way to tho dry goods store where Mrs. EIr.ford was employed. While ho passed through the whole, length of tho lower floor on her way to the elevator, Mrs. Hrooks met many ac n,ualntan"cs. Smilingly she bowed and topped several times to chat pleas antly with her friends, not one of whom suspected for a moment that a few minutes later Mrs. Brooks would be the chief actor In a tragedy. Mrs. Hrooks took tho elevator to the aecond floor of the establishment, where Mrs. Hlnford whb employed. As she stepped from the elevator Mrs. Hrooks Inquired where she could :d Mrs. Hlnford, and as the latter approached. Mrs. Hrooks, without saying a word or giving any warning, pulled her big revolver from her muff. Mrs. Hlnford, realizing her danger, grappled with Mrs. Hrooks and tried to wrest the weapon from her. Her strength was no match, however, for that of Mrs. Hrooks and the latter quickly freed herself and forced the other woman against the wall. In tho scufflo the weapon wua discharged, the 'bullet plowing Its way through Mrs. Hinford's hund. With her victim at bay, Mrs. Hrooks stepped back and fired four times. The second ball struck Mrs. Dlnford In the left shoulder, the third ono an Inch higher, nnd the fourth entered the bast of tho neck shattering the spinal vertebra. Just before her victim sank to the floor, Mrs. Brooks fired again, the bullet striking Don't Wear a Truss After Thirty Years Experience I Have Produced An Appliance for Men, Women or Children That Cures Rupture. v I Send It On Trial. Chicago, March SO. Mrs. Etta oJhnsou, 17157 North Campbell avenue, has a $10,000 back. At least she places that value upoui that part of her anatomy and has asked a jury in the circuit court to agree with her valuation and to make Dr. Otto A. Bremer pay her that amount. And all because Mrs. Johnson does not care to have thousands of persons staring at it every day. Having persons looking at a photograph even of the bask is distasteful to Mrs. Johnson. Mrs. ohnson went to Dr. Bremer to have her back treated. When a cure was effected t!ie physician suggested that a photograph be taken to show thu result of his work. Mrs. Johnson agreed, with the understanding, she says, that the photograph was not to be used. Iater. however, she says, the photograph was placed on exhibition in a drug store in the loop district.
