Merriam of Chicago
There is a man named Merriam who is the winner of the primarynomination of the Republican party for mayor of Chicago. Of course somebody always wins the nomination that's certain. But it is by no means so usual that a man like Merriam should get the nomination.
Merriam is a professor in Chicago University. By all the rules of politics, those two statements are enough to provoke curiosity. Of course if there had not been a direct primary, Merriam wouldn't have had a look in. The reason be would not have had a look in is that there is a commission called the Merriam commission which performs the useful service of saving hundreds and thousands of dollars in various ways for the people of Chicago. That is not the way in which the entrance to political favor is found with those who run machines of the ordinary sort. We can't imagine Mr. 'Hinky Dink" Kenna getting enthusiastic over this sort of man. But it seems that the people of Chicago took a liking to Merriam. They rather got the idea that Merriam was "on the square." Here was a man whom, while they couldn't exactly understand his motives did "come across." We will bet that though Mr. Merriam is ostensibly a candidate of the Republican party that there will be a considerable amount of the political machinery of that parly that is employed against him. Husse, the city boss, opposed him. Lorimer and his plunder bund were alter him. Deneen. the flovernor of Illinois and a factor of some consequence put a candidate in the field to split the vote.
On April 4. the day of the special session of Congress, this small matter will be decided in Chicago. It will be Interesting to look over the news columns and to spot whether Merriam and the people cf Chicago win out over political trickery, money and all the other slime of American city politics. .
Certain persons may still think that it makes a difference that Merriam is a Republican candidate it may be to the credit of the party that he runs under that emblem just as it is certainly discreditable and sure that the forces in the Republican party that fought him on the primary, will vote against him in the election albeit perhaps secretly.
Can Chicago win out? Despite the fact that we seem to get crooks and self interested men Into office all over the country with considerable regularity, the fact is that the majority of people are honest. That doesn't alter the fact that the everyday citizens are very often deceived they find that out later. But the time is coming very rapidly when the people are less and less easily fooled. They are beginning to catch up on the game. It will be a considerable emancipation for all the people of Illinois If Chicago and Merriam win out. That they may know this is because Husse, Deneen and Lorimer are against him also Hinky Dink and Bath House John. April 4 Is a mighty important day In America.
Politics and Potiticians The Democrats made notable gains In the recent municipal elections In Maine. Kentucky Democrats will nominate a etate ticket nnd declare their choijee for United States senator at a general primary on July 1. The Michigan anti-saloon league is formulating plans for submitting state wide prohibition In Michigan In 1914. Usher L. C, next month to decide whether the city shall adopt the commission form of government. Victor 1. Berger of Milwaukee, who will assume his duties as a member of the house on April 4, will have the distinction of being the first socialist in congress. HAPPY RESULTS
Have Made Many Richmond Residents Enthusiastic. No wonder scores of Richmond citizens grow enthusiastic. It is enough to make anyone happy to find relief after years of suffering. Public statements like the following are but truthful representations of the daily work done in Richmond by Doan's Kidney Pills. , Dallas Cassel, 711 S. Eighth St. j Richmond. Ind., says: "About fifteen j years ago I suffered from kidney ! trouble, brought on by heavy lifting. I was very weak and subject to dizzy headaches and I thought I would never be well again. Hearing of Doan's Kidney Pills, I procured a supply at A. G. Luken & Co.'s Drug Store and soon after beginning their use, I felt like a different man. In July, 1906, I publicly recommended Doan's Kidney Pills and I can only add at this time that I have since had no need of a kidney remedy." For sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents. Foster-Milburn Co., Buffalo, New York, sole agents for the United States. Remember the name Doan's and take no other. WHAT OTHERS SAY Electrification of Railroad Terminals. From the Chicago News. That the electrification of railroad terminals in Chicago is inevitable is recognized by the railroad managers as well as' by others. In a recent number the Railway Age, organ of the transportation interests said editorially: "Probably electrification in Chicago must come sooner of later; but it should not be required until a thorough investigation by experts shall be made in which all parties interested should be given full hearing and all important questions involved shall be rationally determined." This statement concedes all that intelligent public opinion demands. Of course electrification cannot be brought about immediately. The problem calls for much preliminary study. But the studies should be undertaken with a view of hastening results. Never. From the New York Mail. v. -- " No news may be good news but not to the managing editor. Aviation in Japan. From the Troy Record. The first aeroplane flights ever witnessed in Japan took place yesterday. Less than a century ago the Nipponese archipelago was in all the arts of civilization, centuries behind the western world. Since the opening of its ports conditions have changed rapidly until today, in other fields, as well as aviation there is little difference in time between the adoption of innovaMorphine Relieved Pain the Great Kidney Remedy Restores to Health For the past few years I suffered greatly from what three physicians called neuralgia of the stomach. The doctors treated me without any sue cess and I called in a fourth doctor, who pronounced my disease gall stones. I suffered intense pain and the only relief the doctor could give me was by injections of morphine. I was so completely discouraged that I had almost given up hope when a neighbor told me about Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root. I decided to try it and began its use at once and after taking nine bottles was completely cured, not having a spell of sickness in over two years. I have so much confidence in Swamp-Root that I never fail to recommend it to my friends who may have kidney trouble of any kind. I feel certain that Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root saved my life, why should it not do likewise to others who take it in time. You are at liberty to use this testimony at any time. Yours truly MRS. Grave of Salmon P. Chase. From the Boston Transcript. The fact that Salmon P. Chases grave is unmarked by stone or tablet may be evidence of the ingratitude of i republics, or it may reflect the pover- j ty of his descendants. The latter j cause is cited by the promoters of the movement to erect a monument at the grave as accounting for the neglect from which the last resting place of the stateman and jurist has suffered.
