MADE BY DUTCH Laborers Have Profit Sharing Concern Making Home Furnishings. Chicago, March 17. A correspondent of the Dally Nwb, writing from tb Hague, lays: In every town of any Importance in Holland movements for the better housing of the work people are on foot and this year has seen the Initiation of a plan for providing their homes with goo, solid and graceful homes with good, solid and graceful It has been expressed. fn a beautiful part of the province of Utrecht, overlooking undulating for est and heathland, a furniture factory has been opened. The capital for the enterprise- about 200,000 florins, 80000 has been subscribed In shares of fifty florins ($20) and In smaller shares of only 10 florins (4 each, so that no one need be debarred from joining. Hkllled designers, carpenters and furniture makers have been engaged and have all taken shares in the business. The net profits are to be divided as follows: Five per cent, to the share holders and 40 per cent, to each workman. A certain percentage Is also reserved for a sickness and accident fund, while a pension fund is also to lie formed. ICach workman who is a shareholder has the right to supervise the business books. All Live on Grounds. All the employes, from the director to the laborer, live on the grounds owned by the company, each Individual family having a house of its own, standing free In its own garden, and overlooking a panorama of as undulating, well wooded country as can be found in Holland. "So that the beauty of nature may surround our workers onr workers on every side." say the directors. The houses have large, bright windows on all sides, so that air and sunshine can penetrate everywhere. Every room has been designed for the utmost comfort and practibllity, and the furniture, designed and made by the possessors of the homes themselves, under the capable guidance of the management, has made of their humble dwellings things of beauty that are the joy of their Inmates. It is pleasant t sec what pride every one takes in hi home, in its embellishment and in the cultivation of his little garden after business hours. At present the ten-hour workday obtains, but it is the aim of the company to reduce these house aa much ns shell bo proved practicable by experience. It can bo inferred from the system of profit sharing that in the course of time the whole business may become the property of the men employed therein. Cleanliness Demanadsd. Several useful ruleB regarding perronal rleanllness and the cleanliness of houses and workshops havo been laid down. The fines imposed for non compliance go to swell the sick bene- , fit fund. Although a goodly proportion of the furniture is hand made there is plenty of machine work as welt, for large quantities of pieces are already being turned out and there Is an increasing demand for these articles. A large house on the road to Utrecht has been fitted up for showrooms, where every apartment is filled with complete sets of furniture for all sorts of houses and for "nil sorts and conditions of men." Tho factory does not confine Itself exclusively to the less expensive grades of furniture. Other exquisite articles are also turned out, for, as the management remarks: "It would not do to bo too one-sided, for then the men would loso their ambition in their The Kidney Cure Without a Failure Th Positive Cure That Revolutionliee Treatment of Kidney Diseases, Rheumatism and Bladder Trouble. A t Local Theaters At the Murray Powers, the ventriloquist, playing at J he Murray this week, had a unique and amusing experience during a recent engagement in Opelousas, La. Me and several members of his company attended the funeral of an old colored man, and went with the mourners and friends to the cemetery to see the old parson, who had occupied one pulpit for over fifty years laid to rest. The time had come to lower the coffin, and four big busks grasped tho straps. At this itme Powers it would be a good opportunity to have a little joke at the expense of the pall-bearers. Knowing that since they were colored they were superstitious he edged closej to the grave and threw his voice so that it seemed to come from the coffin. "Let me down easy boys," he said. The pall bearers simeltaneously let out a cry of fear and dropped the straps. Down went the box coffin, and all to tho bottom of tho grave.' During the scramble and excitement that followed a big fat aunty was pushed into the hole on top of tho coffin. The rest fled in consternation. Had "it not been for Leigh, the Juggler, who came to her assistance she might well have been there yet. The matter was brought up before police court, but the judge, who proved to be kind hearted, let the miscreant off a $5 fine. A New Departure. Interpretive dancing is to be introduced locally tonight at the Murray theater when the noted Russian, Countess Thamera do Swirsky, lately Premiere Danseuse of the Metropolitan and Boston opera companies, has been booked for a special engagement at the Murray theater. Besides a number of classic dances, the program of Mile, dc Swirsky, who is also noted as one of the world's truly great dramatic planestes. Includes several numbers at the piano. On her Amercia tour, this season, de Swirskey is accompanied by her own Bpeclal orchestra. Symphony Orchestra Tonight The appearance of the Russian Symphony orchestra at the Gennett theater tonight will serve to introduce four great singers to Richmond. Frank Ormsby, Bertram Schwann. Lealia Joel-IIulse and Nina Dimltrieff. Nina Dimltrieff is the daughter of a famous Russian general. At the age of nine she entered the famous Smolnas convent at St. Petersburg, where her wonderful voice attracted the attention of the Italian Queen, Uelenc. who was then graduating from that institute. For the character of Marguerite, In Berlioz's "The Damnation of Faust." the Worcester festival committee endeavored to select the best fitted singer in the world for this important part. On the recommendation of Jean de Reszke the young Rusian soprano, Madame Nina Dimltrieff. came to this country, and her first appearance in America was in Faust at the Worcester festival. The Russian and Italian critics agree that Marguerite is Madame Dimltrieff's most artistic sue cess. On her appearance in Bologna, Italy. L'Unione said: "The public witnessed a demonstration it had never seen before, the stage being filled with flowers and presents for Madame Dimltrieff. She sang and acted the part of the unfortunate Marguerite. She was decorated for artistic play ing at the convent by Maria Feodonovna the former Russian Empress, who heard her before she bagan her voice study. She has created remarkable enthusiasm in Russia and Italy in Grand Opera. Madame Dimltrieff is an, accomplish ed linguist, singing in five languages and uosesses a most attractive and prepossessing appearance. Singularly enough, Madame DimI trieff is very enthusiastic over singing in English, and she has expressed her surprise that there is so little English used on the American stage. She considers the language simplicity itself and she is adding to her repertoire many choice English ballads.
LABOR OWES IDLE RICH MUCH PRAISE Declared They Create Noncompetitive Demand for Product.
Washington, March 17. A letter to the press, signed Clarence L. Seymour, which presumably is a uom de plume assumed by a wealthy citizen of this city, whose name is very much the same, has been given out apropos of the recent criticism by Associate Justice Harlan, of the supreme court, of the manner in which some of the rich people of Washington spend their Sundays. The letter reads as follows: "It is quite easy for a man of the standing of Justice Harlan to attack people of a certain class and call them names. Any one with less prominence could have uttered the same thing he did and it would not have received a place in the columns of a respectable newspaper. "Is wealth a crime in the eyes of Justice Harlan, or is it a crime for a wealthy man to be idle? If we should have employment we would fill Borne place that some poor man would be glad to have, and there would be very just complaint about it. "By not being at work we become consumers and not competltlors in the labor field. By this course we create a demand for the products of the laborer without competing in his own field of employment. Our class is welcomed in Paris, London, Berlin, Vienna and the world over because our wealth benefits those cities, and all over Europe there is active competition for wealthy Americans. Criticizes the Police. "There arc many features about living abroad to attract us that, say to say,, we miss in 'this glorious, glorious land of the free.' We enjoy a liberty there that we do not in our own capital. A policeman has not got autocratic power in Europe. They could not show the brutality there they do here. "The poor fellow on the street car who claimed a seat because he had paid for, andad a perfect right to, was seized by a policeman and put off the car, and who subsequently sat down on the track in front of the car, thus blocking traffic, was arrested and brutally handled by the police, made to pay a big fine and was called a crank. The man died three days after his rough handling. This could not have happened in any other country or city that we fcnow of. The police may have caused his death. "The police authorities of this city carry things with a high hand. And wealth will soon be made a crime. We come to this beautiful city to enjoy our wealth, but if we are to be attacked by those in high quarters as well as running the risk of falling in the hands of the police, Washington will soon be freed from her wealthy people who have come here and also those who have built homes here." Few government employes in Washington work harder than Elizabeth C. Harris, daughter of the United States representative from Massachusetts, successor to Governor Foss in congress. She is an expert bookkeepeer, stenographer and typist and will act as her father's secretary. The latest fashion prevailing among the women of the Berlin aristocracy is to have their portraits painted while asleep. Have Beautiful Hair; Dry Shampoo Method. The beauty editors of many of the prominent ladies journals are advocating the use of the "dry shampoo" in preference to any and all methods for beautifying the" hair. It is claimed that this method is superior to washing the hair and creates a clean. lustrous, wavy head of hair in a short time. No matter how dry and liveless the hair, the following dry shampoo will soon work wonders if regularly used: With 6 ounces of powdered 'orris root, mix 2 ounces of antiseptic vilane powder. Keep in a tight jar or box and at night apply a tablespoonful, distributing it through the hair with the fingers. In the morning use comb and brush to remove, and all excess oil, dirt, dandruff, etc., will be removed with it. Men and women both use it with the utmost satisfaction. Obtain the ingredients of any well stocked druggist. Philadelphia Lady Says: Mrs. G. J. Anton, No. 2034 No. Alder, Philadelphia, says: "CaseaRoyalPills" are the best I have ever taken. What is described as a tax on happiness is a novel feature of legislation that is arousing the ire of citizens of Berlin. To in-: crease the city's revenues the authorities have formulated a measure levying a special direct tax on all forms of entertainment, except those for the benefit of schools and charities. Wny) one selling a ticket to a theatrical performance, circus or dance will have to pay a tax ranging from 10 to 25 per cent of the cost of the ticket. Even the cheap moving picture shows that charge 8 cents are assessed 1 1-4 cents for every visitor. The amusement loving Berliners are raising a wrathful protest against what they declare to be an unjust tax on simple and harmless pleasures. The authorities are firm in their purpose, and insist on putting the measure through. It is estimated the tax will bring in a revenue of $250,000 annually. Crumpacker Who Has Faith in President Taft. Washington , March 17. Representative Crumpacker, of the Tenth district, one of the few members of the house who are spnding the interim between congresses in Washington, is taking a deep interest in the army maneuvers at San Antonio. He is a visitor at the war department every j day and is in close touch with the army's movement in Texas. "I have no doubt that President Taft has the best reason in the world for sending the troops to the frontier," said Representative Crumpacker, "and when the proper time comes he will take the country into his confidence. I doubt if the President will be able to make his secret public by 'the time congress convenes, but he may. It Mil all depend, of course, on the outtome of the revolution. Has Good Reason "I lose all patience with those who say that Wall street is behind the movement of twenty thousand troops 10 the Texas border. Our government is no respector of of persons. One thing is clear, I believe, and that is that the President has a good reason for taking the action he has in dispatching troops to Texas, or he would not take such a step at this time. "I have the utmost confidence in his judgment and I do not think the people should judge his actions or criticize the move he has made until they learn what is behind it all."
