JOHII L GRIFFITHS DEFEIIDSJMERICAII At London Club, Consular General Answers Attack on U. S. Literature.
New York, March 7. John L. Griffifths, coiibuI gKnral in Ixmdon, at a tiouso dinner of tho Authors' club, ook up the cudsel for "America In Literature." A London dispatch to the Herald says: After explaining what an unpopular find thankles task it la to make folks "see themselves aa others boo thm." Mr. Griffiths added that aome time (to he wai very much Interested in readinR In an KnKlish newspaper the statement that London was to be ronfcratulated because It had an opportunity of serin at the same time two of the most characteristic American plays, representative of American botiety at Its best "MrB. WIrrb of the Cabbage Patch" and "StronRheart" aa if the drawlnR room of the typical American hostess wa a sort of vegetable saloon, and as if it were the usual thlnR for an American heiress to marry a halfbreed if he should happen to be a half-back on a varsity team. Cites Writer's Errors. In concluding his speech, which held the attention of the leadlnR representatives of contemporary English llterautre, Mr. Griffiths alluded to oth er misconceptions of America and Americans in some KnKlish publications. Mr. Griffiths said that some Kngliah wrltert apparently believed that America was a land of multi millionaires, aky-scrapers, swift divorces, newspapers sensational and unclean, with an enormous number of "Harriet" correspondents crime everywhere rampant, lynching a favorite pastime; Jutice, when not slow, corrupt; statesmanship venal; with all public municipal life degraded, manners rtors and coarse, humor vapid or grotesque, trusts omnipotent, spiritual and intellectual values entirely disregarded. According to that view, he asserted. Rome in the most prosperous days of her decline would have been an earthly paradise compared with America. Hat Developed Resources. After telling his listeners that he had seen Americans described as "exiles," "aliens" and "cousins" in English newspapers, Mr. Griffiths called attention to the fact that in the 130 years since America had an. unpleasant little scrap with the mother country America has devoloped her material resources, absorbed tens of millions of stranRers and effected a partial adjustment between two races; made the continent habitable and paid some attention to the intellectual and spiritual needs of the people. Americans have, he said, always had a tragic reverence for education and the foundations of Harvard university were laid In the Frch and Indian war. He did not contend that they had built up a great literature, corres ponding with Kuropean literature, but there were men and women endeavoring to Interpret American life as they saw It about them. Its trend, slgnlficanse, purposo and ambition. Is at Least Alive. Mr. Griffiths asserted that in diplomacy It could be said that America had tried to substitute the Golden Rulo for the finesse, dexterity and treachery which characterized diplomacy at ono time. Judged by its best representatives, he added, the American at least was a man alive with intellectual curiosity, eager for adventure, arduous for great undertakings, exceedingly tolerant In his views of You Will Bo Proud d tht ipptartnet I your tttra ir YOU uti Black OIK: Gtovo Polioh It makes old stoves look Ilk mw and lasts four times a long as any other shin. W SURGEONS' FEES. Pretty Big Sometimes, but Then There Is Another Point of Viaw. I have a warm spot in my heart for the big American surgeons, says a writer in the New York Telegraph, and because of regular attendance for years at some of the most famous clinics in this and other cities I have been a witness of their nnadrertised charitiesacts of mercy and kindness which were never heard of outside the walls of the hospitals they honor by their services. I knew a wealthy man whose daughter was suddenly stricken and whose
life was saved by the attending surgeon. His fee was $23,000. Straightway the father emitted a wail. "It's robbery." he said. The sur geon stood firm. "Your daughter's life is worth $25,000 to you," he countered. There was no denial. "Well, this fee means that I can operate on fifty persons without any charge, and if you don't like it you can force me to sue, but I will get it without a suit or you will stand a lot of publicity." And he got the money without recourse to a court of law. It is safe to mark it down when you see a story of some great surgeon who has charged a high fee that there are many of his patients enjoying good health and relief from pain because he chnrrred them nothing at all.
