1 i tvc. AT THE At Local Theaters "The Spendthrift." A fair sized audience witnessed thi production of "The Spendthrift" as presented last evening at the Gennett theater. The production deserved a far better house as it was one of the best shows seen here so far this season. The play Itself is more than good, but was considered by many a spoiled by the climax. The play goes along consistently until in the third act a.nd then all at once seems to drop. The hero at this point seems to become a mere man and the curtain falls on this Ineffective piece of melodrama. However tho lesson to bo learned from the story is well brought out. only it seems Impossible that in this day and age a woman could let herself become bo selfish, spending twenty-five thousand dollars a year when her husband's income was twen ty thousand. It seems just a little impossible, for one can scarcely believe that a man would permit such torn-foolery as it were, in this present day The story is a most interesting one however because it tells the story of social life and a life which no doubt Is current in New York, the place where the action occurs. To say that the cast could act would be putting it mildly as they all had a naturalness and simplicity of manner which is Indeed highly commendable. The plot is formed by the extravagance of the young and beautiful wife whose taste for beauty and pretty gowns runs her husband into debt until he declares himself a bankrupt. At last Bhe borrows the money of a millionaire, a man who is interested in her. Her husband does not believe her story and thinks the man her lover. Finally she runs away and be comes a governess, in the last act a reconciliation is effected. Taken all in all the production last evening was one of the best ever witnessed in this city and will be long remembered with pleasure by theater goers. E. 11. T. The Other Woman. From the time she 'made her debut in "Tweirth Night," at the age of sixteen, the nrouress of Miss lllancho Walsh toward the height of real fame in the world of theaters has been stadlly onward. She has been the star in more than a dozen productions, and never once has a play with which she was identified had its career cut short. It follows therefore, that ber new play. "The Other Woman" in which she will be seen here shortly, has the prestige which her wonderful career carries with it. The play was especially written to give her the opportunity to display her great powerB of emotioual acting, and lovers of the drama may well look forward to the presentation of it with keen anticipation. The rolo which Miss Walsh has in this play is said to be the strongest in which she has ever been seen. This Is saying a good deal, but reports from cities w here she has already appeared this season show lhat she has swayed audiences in her new play as she has seldom Influenced them even in her wondenul successes or previous years. Miss Walsh will be at the Gennett tomorrow night. At Gennett Tonight. When one speaks of Western plays the listener usually thinks of shots and red fire. This opinion is not to be formed about "The Girl and the Stampede," the new melodrama of the bind west of the Rockies, by Victor Lambert, which comes to the Gennett tonight, for it a Western play with a natural atmosphere, with strong situations and few gun shots, with more poetic lines than "Greaser talk." It has bounded into public favor as a successor to "The Hound I" p. It c on - tains more speeches that one carries away stored in their memory for pleasant recollections. Messrs. C.askill & McVitty, the producers, have supplied the play with an excellent cast and an elaborate scenic production, all in all it Is n play that should be worthy of public interest. t At the Murray. Twenty-five years of experience on the stage, and most of the time spent with high class minstrel shows, is what Harry M. Morse brings with him to insure the success of the comedv sketch he is presenting with his company at the Murray this week. Interlocutor and stage manager for the Cohan and Harris company, no one can doubt that he has ample ability and experience to please the most ex acting audience: Mrs. Morse, with her pleasing smile and comfortable manners affords a most happy match for the close of the playlet. Rut many will think Mtss Alberto the most charming feaure of the bill. Her exquisite dancing and real ability for acting are the best !en here for some time in a light sketch. scene chosen for the event is West Point during the graduation exercises, and being youthful the story has to do with love and love's young dream. The title role is interpreted by Miss Leona Watson who is ably assisted by a brilliant array of talent including Leach. Iawrence Heck, Addie Dougherty, Clyde Hall, Harry Joyner, Earl Mountain, James Parry and many others equally as well known with a beautiful chorus of nineteen hundred and ten debutantes. The musical numbers are a big feature with the production being melodies from the effervescing pen of Joseph K. Howard and Foon the tuneful airs of "I Think ' I Hear a Woodpecker Knocking on My Family tree," and "Indian Love Song" will be whistled and sung throughout the city. Arcade. , Big audiences at the Arcade yesterday saw some pictures they will never forget. American cowboys in Africa, calmly lassoing lions and other fierce beasts with no weapons but the rope. It was a marvelous demonstration of nerve and skill and' hair breadth escapes. Col. Buffalo Jones and his men have given to the world moving pictures so vivid that the leading magazines have run feature articles describing them. These films can be seen at. the Arcade today for the last time. The management made every effort to keep them longer, but the demand was too great. Don't miss seeing "Col. AUTOMOBILE GOSSIP The date of French Grand Prix au-! tomobile race has been changed to June i. The steering gear of an automobile requires more frequent inspection during the winter than at other seasons. i There are f)7.000 families in the t'nited States with au annual iacome of $1,000 or more. As manv of these ;are able to support an automobile the field is by no means as liable to be exhausted as some pessimists would insist. So successful has an auto delivery j company of Portland. Ore., proved in its work that similar companies are to be organized in Ixs Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. These companies will be capitalized at $250,000 each. The Secretary of State in California got a letter a few days ago from a Napa man to say that his wife had discovered that the figures 43501 in their automobile license tag totaled 13, and that she refused to ride in the car until another number was supplied. The three-day automobile race meet to be held under the auspices of the Jacksonville Motor club on the Atlantic Pablo beach, starting March 27th, promises to be a great success. All of the leading American cars will compete. That the mile record established by 'Oldfield will be broken is the general hope. The ocean washed course is ideal for exceptional speed. The sign posting car of the Automobile club of America is ploughing its way through frozezn ruts, mud, snowdrifts and slush. The touring bureau has mapped out so much work that they can not afford to wait for good roads. The old iron signs erected by the club in the early days of its sign posting campaign have become in many cases defaced and illigible. Tho mints will stop striking off gold coins as soon as President Taft signs the bill which Congress has passed, permitting the secretary of the treasury to issue gold certificates against gold bullion and foreign gold coin. Although no more gold will be coined for about three years, there will be plenty on hand in the treasury vaults for all who want it, and in the meanwhile treasury officials estimate the government will save about $300,000 a year. Some readjustment of the forces of the mints will be necessary, but there will be no wholesale reductions of forces, as the demand for silver coins, nickels and pennies is very heavy and shows no sign of abatement. aiwassassaassasasasasasasasassa Asthma ! Elyria, O.. March 2. Lizzie Hamilton, a fifteen-year-old junior in Elyria hish school is in a state of coma through the influnece of a dream which she had three weeks ago. The attending physician. Dr. Edward Sheffield, who. so far, has failed tQ arouse her, says she is the victim of self-hypnotism. The girl, who has been trying to complete a four-year course in three, and has been reading psychology and had, studied the chapters on suggestion and auto-suggestion, told R. P. Vaughn, the chemistry instructor at the high school, about her dream. "I saw myself locked in the labora tory at school," she said. "I could not get out; fumes from the chemicals i overcame me; I died." I She asked Mr. Vaughn yesterday to ' allow her to do some experiments in ; the laboratory. At noon he found the door open, and, without looking in, he locked it. Returning in the afternoon, he found the girl senseless. "I think that when she found the door locked she believed her dream had come tree," says Dr. Sheffield. "She was suffering from overstudy. Rest probably will effect a cure. COLD KILLS THE GERM.
