GOQDUII! TO WRITE ftBOUTJlTRIMOIiy Much Married Actor Will Tell of Experiences in His New Book.
New York. Feb. 15. It is no new rule for Nat C. Goodwin to it and forth as an apostle of matrimony, but when he starts to write an exhaustive work on the subject, culled from his own experiences of nearly thirty-five years well. Its time for the other members of the alimony club to begin saving their pennies to buy a copy of the volume, which will surely come to be the standard text book on the subject. "I Wonder" Is the name of the book Mr. Goodwin already has proof beets of some 'of the chapters and its author received his Inspiration shortly after fate dealt him its latest wallop In the form of a suit for divorce by Kdna Goodrich, the moBt rerent Mrs. Goodwin and one of the prettiest of the collection. Hasn't Sworn Off Marrying. The referee. J. Campbell Thompson, has announced that ho would recommend that an unconditional divorce be Riven Mrs. Goodwin and the hold?r of the matrimonial Marathon ' record received the news as he sat at tho table In the Hotel Metro pole a lonx with Arnold Duly, Kddie Koy. George I Consldlne, Corse Payten and Eddie Burke, some of whom are not entirely without experience themsclveB. "Have I sworn off?" he repeated after the reporter, from the matrimonial habit? Not in a hundred years, my boy, not on your life. Why swear off? Matrimony is the only state, and I will never swear off. as you call It." "Have you any particular young woman In mind as the next Mrs. Goodwin?"he was asked. , Admits Soma Mistakes. "Well, no; hardly that," he replied. "Such an announcement would be, to say the least, premature. I was speaking of matrimony as a general proposition. People talk about Goodwin as much married and divorced and all that. Well, my answer is, 'Why not?' And nobody's ever called me. Tn all my years of experience I've always tried to do the right and honorable thing, and although I've made some mistakes, I think I've succeeded reasonably well. "The fact that I have regarded the marriage ceremony so highly shows that I have always tried to do the right thing. In every case it was not I who went to the divorce courts remember that, my boy. "Hut it Is this subject that I am treating in a most exhaustive manner in my book," he continued, "and I think I will advance a philosophy that will, have many followers, at least among the men and women ,of the stage. No I will not go Into details bout the book just now, but in Bpite of Its rather frivolous title. 'I Wonder,' it Is to be serious work, and I treat my subject in a dignified manner. Matrimony an Inspiration. "The conclusions I have reached are taken from my thirty-five years of experience, and I have recounted many of the incidents and adventures that have made me an authority to speak a ! do. Matrimony with me, my boy, It not a habit, as some people seem to think it's an Inspiration, a feeling of fervcr that leads me to do the thing that I believe is right and will result In the most permanent happiness. "No. I will not admit that the lack of cr-permanency in my experience is an argument against my theory. On the surface it may seem so, but deep in my Inner consciousness I. know that it isn't true. STOP WILLCOIITESTS Testator's Sanity to Be Proven Before Death.
Boston. Feb. 15. A bill has been referred to the nest legislature which if enacted will put an end to will con tests in this state. The proposed measure allows a person who has executed a will to take the document to the probate court and ask for a hearing upon the question of his ability, mental and legal, to make it. After listening to arguments on the bill, the committee on legal affairs decided to allow the next, general court to act upon it. Albert E. Plllsbury, former attorney general of this state, is strongly in favor of the bill. He says: The looting of dead men's estates has now become an etablished industry in Massachusetts, as it has been In New York for many years. A will bequeathing any substantial sum of money to charities or to any person or subject outside the testator's family and near relatives is always liable to be contested on the ground that the testator was of unsound mind, or was unduly influenced or both. Any heir at law or next of kin has the legal right to set up this claim and i force a contest, which means a year or years of litigation, delay and expense and often compels the buying off of the contestants. There are of course some cases of merit where there are real grounds of contest, but I think the judges and lawyers of most experience would say these are a small minority. In the others it is simply legalized blackmailing of the estate. It must now be assumed and ought to be understood that no man or -woman of whatever character or standing can leave a will bequeathing a property away from relatives with any assurance that it will be carried into effect. The chances are at the best that a substantial part of the estate may be wasted in defending the will or buying off claimants and if the estate is large and the testator had any sign of eccentricity about him or any peculiarity of temperament or conduct that can be tortured by easy consciences Into evidences of insanity there is always a chance If not a probability that his will must give way to a new and radically different disposition of his . estate, arranged by or among claimants, lawyers, judges and juror's according to their own interests or ideas of propriety. i.-tt vtiriters.
