A RALLYING CALL FOR BETTER ROADS State Organization Appeals to the People to Aid in the Contest.
Palladium Hpcilal) Indianapolis, Feb. S.Thc Indiana Voud Roads association today issued the following appeal to the people of Indiana: "Indiana sill! clings persistently to the ancient law which provides that the road taxes may 1m worked out. Thin law even provides that the tax payer may work out his portion at any time hetween the first of May and th f!rt of December. The Road HupfrvlKor cannot force this work to be lone at one time, every tax payer can ue his own convenience about it. "This law Is a fraud Hnd a Joke, a tax of about two million dollars is annually levied, outside of Incorporated towns and titles, for the repair and maintaining of road. It Is conserva tive to aay that not over 25 cents on i a dollar of tho tax levy for roads, that may be worked out. Is Judiciously expended on the roads. "Why Is this antiquated system continued? The answer Is simple and -asy. There Is assessed against the railroads and other public corporations In Indiana about four hundred thousand dollars in taxes for roads. This tax should be paid in cash, but Is farmed out to contractors who deliver the iec Ipts- to the railroad companies showing that the amount has been worked, for about .SO cents? on the dollar. The contractor sub-contracts with local people to work out this tax, or obtain the receipts signed by tho snreprvlsor the best way he can, at about 50 to CO cents on the dollar. These main contractors arc generally credited with making from ftiO.nuo to $75,000 per year net. These gentlemen are shrewd able men who don't pro I tone to be put out of business and this Is why these rotten laws are Mill on the statute Ixtoks of Indiana. They are maintaining a strong lobby to defent road laws now before the legislature which will If passed, put Indiana In line to judiciously spend the two million dollars now assessed for good roads. "The railroads are not the only ones who tihlrk their duty and render tho present system a Joke, whole Communities make a picnic of working out their road tax and no efficient work Is done. At Local Theaters CLEAN, CLEVER PLAY. A Fair Crowd Se-i Woodruff in "The Genius." Just an ordinary crowd last evening at the Gennett saw a clever play, out of the ordinary. It was "The Genius," Henry Woodruff, in the title role. lnl!Ue the majority of musical comedies the play is excellently written, but the music was not of exceptional merit. In places ll) action dragged, but on the whole it was a lively, witty and entertaining satire on that peculiar class of people who "go in for" art, pose as Its judge and jury, but who are. at the same time, absolutely ignorant of Its true meaning. Woodruff in assuming the role of a master genius, a great musician, artist and sculptor, to win the girl he immaglnes he loves a girl who has refused him because ho Is not posted In things artistic, had a part that studied him well. With three clever tutors, a musician, a sculptor and an artist, whose works he offers to the public as his own, he makes a complete dunce of a great critic, also the public, wins back the girl who spurned his suit, only to find ho was irrtlove v!'.h an artist model. To. "shake" his first affinity he denounces himself as a "fake." She, the critic and the art devotees refuse to believe him. He finally has to convince the affinity No. 1 that she Is his inspiration and that it Is impossible for a genius to wed his Inspiration. For art's sake she makes the sacrifice and the happy Woodruff then marries his model sweetheart. All the principals In "The Genius" offered Mr. Woodruff splendid support. Much curiosity has been engendered In the coming engagement of James K. Hackett at the Gennett tonight in his latest and most successful presentation "The King's Game" which was written for him by Charles Hrackett Seitz. The local engagement is to be made under the direction of Wm. A. Hrady, Limited. The action of "The King's Game" Is placed In one of the smaller Imaginary European principalities. Tho anarchists are planning against the King who Is the central figure of the story. He is a fun-loving monarch and he is keen to see things In their own setting, free from all of the fuss ard fustian with which a King Is expected to be handicapped. Against the King's life a conspiracy Is afoot and the leader Is Sargius DarInllis, who is the llaron Von Troinp. With his daughter, they plan that the King is to bo killed by a bomb, that they are fabricating. To a young workman who resembles the king, is assigned the duty of throwing the deadly bomb and when the time comes to throw the fatal instrument, it is the real King who throws it. Woven with much intricacy Is the love story that concerns the King and the Baron's daughter When the final curtain falls the turgid atmosphere has cleared and the King returns to his throne while the girl who has learend to love the King, realizes that he Is a mortal with hopes and feelings as she has. and from hating Kings she comes to see them as human beings. "Man on the Box." It is not every play which makes a good book, and it is even less frequent that a good book' makes a good play, but in the ".Man on the Box" which is to be seen at the Gennett theater tomorrow night,' Harold McGrath has builded better than he knew for the pretty love story has made both a fascinating book and an interesting play. The comedy has many novel situations which are all well blended so that the excitement does not lag for a moment but keeps the audience in a good humor from the rise to the fall of the curtain. ACT TOME TERM Woman Inquires as "Head of Family" Term. Denver, Feb. 9. All the members! of the lower house of the legislature) sat up and took notice when the reading clerk, after clearing his throat with unusual care, read in impressive tones, "An act to define the meaning of the term, 'Head of a family.'" "Huh!" ejaculated several baldheaded representatives at once, as j they looked over in th direction oft Mrs. Louis M. Kerwin, representative j from Denver. The latter appeared to be busy tidying her desk, but presently she looked up and acknowledged the authorship of the bill. "It's just a measure to declare that a widow who supports a family is head of the house and entitled to $200 exemption on personal property taxation." she explained. "That's different," exclaimed the mere men. and the dove of peace fluttered on the job again. MISSING MAYOR SAYS MIND WAS .WEAKENED Lawrenceberg. ind., Feb. 0. Willard D. New York Feb. 9. "Girls, if you Intend to devote your life to art in any of its branches, don't marry." This is the advice of Miss Evelyn Beatrice Longman, the young Chicago sculptress who has pust completed her most ambitious work, a clay model of the bronze doors for the new library to be dedicated at Vellesley college next June. Miss Longman was potting the finishing touches to the model in her studio, and she paused long enough to talk a little of her successes aud reverses since she came to New York ten years ago determined to be a sculptress. Does Not Regret Leaving Chicago I came from Chicago," she said, "and I did not know a person in New York. All my girl friends at home have to endure before they accomplish anything worth while. "Neveri heless I came and I never have been sorry. I obtained a position as assistant in the studio of Daniel Chester French and I remained there three years. Then I started in for myself.
