EIITER LOCAL CAR III 500 MILE RACE Harry Knight, Driver for the Westcott Will Drive Car at Indianapolis. Indianapolis, Ind., Feb. 8. Announcement that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway 500-mllo International Hwcepstakes race next Memorial Day is to be the opening event In the automobllo racing circuit which the American Automobile Association Is forming Is looked upon with favor 'by tho management of the big brick speedway. Tentative plans for tho circuit were made by various members of tho Contest and Rules committees of the A. A. A. during the Chicago automobile show and committees have been appointed to put the project into tangible form. The racing circuit Idea has been considered by the manufacturers for some time and the action taken at the last meeting of the contest and rules bodies was the result of agitation which extended over a period' of about a year's duration. On account of the fact that the 500-mile race at Indianapolis in May Is the greatest race ever planned and Is richer in prize money than any othere event In the history of the sport, the A. A. A. officials believe that It will be a fit
ting opening for the season of 1911, which they think Is to be the greatest since motor racing was Instituted. It Is the plan of the A. A. A to ar range dates In such a way as to allow the various racing teams to travel In a complete circuit of the country, taking In the speedways, mile tracks and road courses. These will be classified and considered In propor tlon to their importance. A. C. New. by, one of tho leading auto manufucturers and one of the directors of the Speedway, said: "As an automobile manufacturer, I believe that circuit plan Is advanta geous. It will reduce the expense of maintaining a racing team greatly, and with a continuous circuit with meetings at stated Intervals, we wlH be better able to keep our cars in tune and attack any defects which the constant use would bring out. Spasmodic racing Is of some benefit. but not as much as systematic contln ual tests. "From the standpoint of the Speed way, I believe It would be a great aid In tho promotion of meets and would create a greater public Interest In the sport of automobile racing than has been known heretofore. It Is certain that the public will follow the sport more closely when the winnings of the various cars and drivers are pub' lished daily, much as base-ball now Is. The rivalry thus created I believe will stimulate the sport." Seven entries have been made thus far for the International Sweepstakes race, the last being' a Westcott specially built car which will be driven by Harry Knight. The Westcott Is a comparltlvely new car in the racing game, but Its previous performances nave been very consistent and the manufacturers believe that a large motor built along the same lines as the smaller one will prove a surprise in speed circles. The other entries are Lewis Strang, In a Case car; C. It. Baldwin In an Inter-State "50"; Johnny Aatkln In a National "40;" Louis I) lab row In a i Pope-Hartford; Frank Fox In a Pope-Hartford; and a Simplex, for which a driver has not been nominated. Ralph DePalma may drive this laBt, named 'car. Feminine Chronology. Stella-How old Is Mnbel? BellaOld enough to be younger. New York Bun. v. AT THE GENNETT, At Local Theaters "The Genius" The life of a producer is not always happy, especially when he finds that he has a play which does not please the public, and even when he has one that pleases things are not always smooth sailing. Luck many times figures greatly In a production, and Mort H. Singer who will present Henry Woodruff In "The Genius" at the Gennett tomorrow trusts more or less to luck as well as to his personal experience. His progress as a producer has been most rapid and up to date he has presented only successes. "The Genius" is a musical farce comedy in three acts. The book Is from the pens of Wm. and Cecil DeMillet who havo many successes to their credit, while the musts has been provided by Paul Rubens and the lyrics by Vincene Bryandt, and according to the reports of the critics, they have brought forth their best efforts. The music is thoroughly In keeping with the play, being Introduced in a highly artistic fashion. The story of the play is of a young fellow an every day sort of fellow with a big heart, a good sized bank account and little love for the artistic, strictly construed. He Imagines he loves a girl whose only thought In life is of genius and th9 temperamental. He conceives the happy idea of paying a little coterie of artist s-ra painter, a musician." and a sculptor, to let him pose as a genius, putting his name to all their works, and then when he becomes famous as his position will make him, to let them reap the benefit. The plan succeeds too well, for be not only becomes famous, but he falls in love with the beautiful model in the studio, and also wins the other girl's love when ho least wants it. How he finally gets the girl of his choice is prettily told, giving a happy ending to the play. Is a Satiris Comedy. "The King's Game" is the new satiric comedy which Mr. James K. Hackett, the famous romantic actor is to be seen at tho Gennett on Thursday evening with a characteristic Wm. A. Brady, Limited, company. The comedy was written for Mr. Hackett by George Brackett Seltz and has been hailed by reviewers as a worthy contribution to the nation's dramatic literature. Like so many plays In which Mr. Hackett has been Seen, he plays a king, but there is in this monarch's make-up a sense of humor that makes him thoroughly human. He would see for himself what his subjects think of him and In that Haroun-al-Raschid mood he comes upon a party of conspirators who are planning to kill the king by throwing a bomb at him during a regal parade. It would be very unfair to the theatre-goer who will see Mr. Hackett, to tell him hoC the king thwarts his enemies and makes the chief conspirator's daughter n cause he Is a man as well as her firm friend, who cares for the king beruler. The scenes of "The King's Game" are located in an imaginary European monarchy Turrania where only the few who have faith are allowed to enter after showing their passports. These credentials consist in believing in romance the mood which makes many things possible, for the one who believes. Seats are now on sale and the admlrors of James K. Hackett are many If the many Inquiries for scats can be taken as a criterion. "The Man on the Box." The Man on the Box. by Harold McGrath and Grace Livingston Furnlss. will be presented at the Gennett Friday night. This will be an agreeable surprise to those who have read the book as it is one of the most delightful stories ever written. Heinemann Recital. The Richmond Mannerchoir a very strong and representative German organization of singers, is lending its enthusiastic aid to the success of the Alexander Heinemann recitaL This organization numbers about 100 and at its regular business meeting Instructed the director, Wm. The Mannerchoir will attend in a body and will also do all within its power to make this the greatest success possible in order that Mr. Heinemann may be greeted with the largest and most representative audience ever assembled to hear a great artist. There are enough Germans in our city to pack the Coliseum, and it is characteristic of the Germans, they love music, and a night of the genuine German song, such as supported throughout the German empire by the emperor will be a treat to the Germans of Richmond. At the Murray. There is something about "A Night With the Poets" 'which is at the New Murray this week as the feature attraction that peculiarly apepals to almost every one. Particularly pleased with this production are those who appreciate that air of refinement which comes only with an act of its kind. Bennett and Sterling in their singing and talking act is another one which pleases. The costuming of this clever pair is not the least noticeable part of their offering. Their songs are new and well used and tho stories employed are entertaining. PLAYS AND PLAYERS Mme. Mazimova is to make a tour through Texas. Paris has a musical version of "Don Quixote," with music by Massenet. William Cedlier will remain in New York for the remainder of the season. Dave Lewis, the German comedian, is playing in a piece caller "Don't Lie to Your Wife." One of the new plays to bo produced in New York is "Shadows," by Arthur J. Baldhead Club One is Being Organized in
a Western City. Perhaps this report is a joke, but one thing Is certain a baldhead Is no j-ke to the man who wears it. A club of baldheads formed in every ciiy in America would be a good thing if its members could be induced to parade hatiess. through the main streets of the city. The writer would suggest that some of the members carry banners with inscriptions of such a character as to warn those who still have hair, that baldness is unnecessary; that in nearly every case it is the result of carelessness. Manners inscribed as follows would be -appropriate: "We let the dandruff germ do it." "The time to save the hair is when you have hair to save." "When we were young, the dandruff germs worked every blessed minute. They dug our hair out by the roots, and now we aren't in. it." The best banner of all would be this.
