MERE DAUBS WERE VORKSOFWIASTERS French Royalist Faces a Charge of' Swindling Dealt in Jewelry. Paris. Feb. 7. The name and title tf -De Cholseul" are not as lucky as talisman In France just now. Not long ago the Marquis de Choi-fceul-Praalln was made to figure more or less In tbo trial of the pscudo Comte d'Aulby. who was charged with swindling the former Mrs. Hamilton Paine of Boston, now Duchess de Cholscul-Praslin. by means of forged 'old masters." Now the Comte Claude de CholseulPraslln, and related to the Forbes family of Boston and New York, is charged In a Paris police court with mortgaging compuritively worthless daubs as masterpieces of art of the famous Choiseul collection. Security In Necklace Purchase. In this case, as in the recent one Inolvlng Claude Caalmer-Perrier. ron of the late former president of the French republic, the security in question whs Klven in tbo purchase of a pearl necklace. In the Cholseul case also, as in the other, the estate of tbo aristocratic defendant Is controlled by a committee of bis relatives, duly appointed by a family council, according to the French custom. The prosecutor is well known among jewelers. The prlco exacted for the necklace Was (18,600. It appeared later that the Comte de Cholscul-Praslin had given the pearls to his "good friend" Mme. Carmon Del Sera no, and that later they bad been sold. for less than half the purchaso price. Pictures Found to Be Fakes. Then the exposuro came. The pictures proved to be fakes. Not only that, but they were the property of the man who had originally appraised them for the jeweler, and who Is thus Implicated in tho accusation aa a fellow conspirator with the comte. These pictures were represented to be originals by Rubens, Frans Hals, Van Dyck, and Lely. The aunt of the comte, Mrs. Dora Forbes of New York, who resides with him at 37 Avenue de l'Alma, informed Inquirers that he had left ParIs, but for whut destination she did not know.

AT THE CENNETT TONIGHT
At Local Theater At the Murray. A Night With the Poets, is the feature attraction of an unusually good bill at the New Murray this week. Clinton Lloyd who was the original reader with the act and who was so well received upon his appearances in this city last year is again with the production and will be heard here this week. A Xight With the Poets is now under the personal ownership and direction of (Jus Sun and he is presenting the act over his own circuit. Tho production is just as beautiful in point of staging as it was' last. season and is if anything more elaborate. Mr. Lloyd last season Jumped into instant favor with those literarlly inclined and he was in great demand by the local societies. One of the best singing quartets is with the act. The Man on the Box. Friday evening "The Man on the Box" will be presented at the Gennett In a capable manner and one which will in every way be satisfactory to the audience when they witness this delightful comedy which was one of the greatest successes of the popular Henry K. Dlxey. who was seen here last season in Mary Jane's Pa. "The Man on the Box" is a dramatization of the well read book of the same name, by Harold McGrath, and Is considered by all who have been fortunate In seeing it, to be far better in many ways than the novel. The humor seems to be more spontaneous and the action follows so quickly that there is no time lost for one to be bored. ' "Brewster's Millions." "Brewster's Millions," a dramatization of Georgjj Burr McCutcheon's entertaining story, will be the attraction at .the Gennett .this eveuing. Carl Gerard will be seen in the title character of Brewster which he has played for upwards of one hundred consecutive weeks and the excellent cast is practically the original. Grace Nile will be seen as "Peggy" Grey and the remaining long list of characters will bo played respectively by Nestor Lennon. Arthur II Ashley, Gus Christie, Richard Morgan, Den Wilkes, Howard L. Horsey, Grace Nile, Louise Sanford. Marguerite Slavin, Jane Wallace and Gertrude Shanley and a score of others. There is nothing new to say about the play. The triumph of stagecraft Is attained in the wonderful scene on shipboard, the yacht rocking in the gale when "Monty" sounds the signal of distress, thus disposing in less than a second of the $500,000 which had been worrying him for weeks. Of course it is all wildly improbable, so was the book, but there is fun enough in this whimsical story of frenzied finance to make even the blase playgoer laugh. "The Genius." To enjoy the hospitality of the exclusive circles of America and European society carries with it a certain distinction that is sought by the most prominent of our citizens. Upon the stage there are but few who enjoy an honor: a few that can be counted upon the fingers of one hand. Of this exclusive set of stage people are Ethel narrymore. Bertha Kalich, Mrs. Flske, William Faversham and Henry Woodruff. The last mentioned is of Interest because of his extreme popularity in this section of the country and particularly so, owing to the appearanco of Mr. Woodruff at the Gennett Wednesday night In The Genius, under the direction of Mort H. Singer, Henry Woodruff is the oldest "young staor" In existence and the only unmarried male stellar light upon ; the American stage. He began his j career In 1S79 at J. H. Haverly's 14th street theater. New York, playing In i Pinafore. That Is a long time ago, ! but what girl in America has not rav ed over Henry's blonde hair and gone Into raptures orer his delightful stage love making? His Jack Spencer In The Genius Is considered his best effort, since be played . the Imp in When We Were Twenty-one with the original company Of course bis immense success in The Prince of Tonlftht cannot be cast aside, but The Genius gives him a beter opportunity to display his charming nersonalIty. In the summer Mr. Woodruff whiles iy the sunny "hour on his estate at Siasconset. Nantucket Isle, where he has his own golf links and

tennis courts. His steam launch rocks on the swells of Long Island sound and ho is known for bis handsome endeavors at entertaining. His excuse for remaining a bachelor is that as yet he has not found his ideal woman. Girls there i3 still a chance for you! James K. Hackett. Much curiosity has been engendered in the coming engagement of James K. Hackett at the Gennett on Thursday evening in his latest and most successful presentation The King's Game, which was written for him by George Brackett Seitz. The local engagement is to be under the direction of William A. Brady Limited. The action of tho King's Garye is placed in one of the smaller imaginary European principalities. The anarchists are planning against the king who is tho central figure cf the story. He is a fun loving monarch and be is keen to see things in their own setting, free from all the fuss and fus: tian which a king is expected to be handicapped with. Against the king's life a conspiracy is afoot and the leader Is Sarglus Darinilis, who is the Baron Von Troiup. With his daughter, they plan that the king is to be killed by a bomb that they are fabricating. To a young workman who resembles the king, is assigned the duty of throwing the deadly bomb, and when the time comes to throw the fatal instrument It is the real king who throws it. Woven with much intricacy is the love story that concerns the king and the Baron's daughter. When the final curtain falls the urgid atmosphere has been cleared and the king returns to his throne while the girl who has learned to love the king realizes that he is a mortal with hopes and feelings as she has and from hating kings she. comes to see them as human beings. Climbing up to the key box, he smashed in the little glass window and turned the key. When the door opened the monkey clung to the box squealing and yank ing the lever up and down. FATAL STEP FOR CHICAGO DAHCER
Steps on Toe of Enemy Who! Shoots to Kill and Holds j Posse at Bay. . Chicago, Feb. 7. While a dance was in progress at 942 Hope street, Pasquale Laventura, 1047 We6t Polk street, in whose honor the affair was given, was shot and killed by Edward Trogliano, who for years had held a grudge against his victim. The murderer, wnen Laventura dropped to the floor of the hall and the music ceased pointed his revolver toward the twenty couples on the floor and threatened them if they attempted to follow or interfere with his escape. He fled from the place and is now being sought for by the police of the Maxwell street station. The dance was given by Raffaelle Quaricman, 942 West Polk street, in honor of the coming from Italy of Mrs. Laventura. the victim's wife, who is expected next week. Grudge Reopened at Dance According to four of the men found in the house who are being held by the police as witnesses, a long standing grudge between the men was reopened by Trogliano when it is said Laventura stepped by accident on the former's foot during a waltz. Trogliano, taking this as an intentional insult, the police believe dropped the arm of his dancing partner, and, stepping back, drew his revolver and fired three shots, all of which took effect. Four-Witnesses are Held. After taking the wounded Italian to the hospital, Sergeant Homer and Detectives Kline and Richio took Quaricman into custody first. He told the police S. Trochin, 933 Hope street, and Parasmar Cheser and John Mar io, boarders at his house, were witneses to the shotting, being in the dance room at the time and they also were detained. Encouragement. The first Sunday in October was mentioned as an appropriate date and. it was suggested that the clergy of the various denominations preach from texts bearing on the subject of kindness to all creatures.
