Two yeara later the paper had 7,500 subscribers. The panic of the following year nearly caused .the suspension of the New Yorker and it waa on Ita last lege when la 1S3S Thurlow Weed made Greeley editor of the JeffersonIan, a Whig paper established at Albany during the campaign that ended in the election of William II. 8eward aa governor of New 'York. Aa editor of that paper Greeley became a prom Inent ngure In state affaire and although he was only about 27 yeara of age, be' waa recognised aa one of the strongest political writers of the day. Edits the "Leg Cabin. Two yeara later Greeley waa chosen to edit the Log Cabin, the Whig campaign paper of 1840. The subsequent history of Greeley waa Inseparably linked to that of the New York Tribune at the bead of which he remained for thirty years, severing his connection with that Journal only a few , days before his death, which occurred on November 29, 1872. . . . It would be difficult to overestimate the Influence which waa wielded by the pen of Horace Greeley. He bad courage and he had an honest conscience and these were backed by 'a mastery of incisive clear English. He was one of the , foremost advocates of a protective tariff and that the North was brought to the Intense hostility to slavery that culminated In the birth of the Republican party and that the emancipation . proclamation of Abraham Lincoln was. In a large measure due to the the editorial columns of the New York Tribune. , Greeley never held public offlce but once, when he filled an unexpired term In congress for a few weeks. He waa nominated for the presidency by the Democrats and the Liberal Republicans In 1872. but waa overwhelmingly defeated by Grant. The intense disappointment of , his defeat, following the death of his wife In September of the same year and the tremendous exertion of the campaign caused his collapse and his sudden death . of brain fever on November 29, 1872.
