A great many years ago the people f Egypt, who had many Idols, worshiped tbe cat among others. Interesting Scene
ii-i AT THE GENNETT 4 Local Theaters "Brewster's Millions. "Brewster's Millions." a dramatiza tion of George Barr McCutcheon's popular novel, will be the attraction at tlie Gennett next Tuesday, February 7. The McCutchoon play is an intensely amusing farce-comedy with a sensation In the third act that is easily tho best scenic illusion ever shown on the Htatje. Tho scone transpires on board "Monty" Brewster's yacht on the Mediterranean during a violent electric storm. The deck of the yacht in this scene rises and falls, the masts groan and creak and sway to the accompaniment of peals of thunder and vivid lightning flashes that light up the tumultuous phosphorescent waves and the storm clouds that race across the heavens. All the appurtenances of a full grown hurricano are presented and the effect is a triumph of stage mechanism. It requires a force ofx27 stage hands to operate this vivid Bcene which Is covered by seventeen patents controlled by Frederick Thompson, the producer. Ten hours are required to prepare the stage for tho intricate appliances. "The Genius." There are few managers who keep account of the number of people their attractions play to during a season, but Mort II. Singer, who will present Henry Woodruff in "The Genius" at the Gennett next Wednesday, knows almost the exact number, and he takes pride in keeping records. Henry Woodruff in "The Prince of Tonight." last season played to more than his other shows, the record giving the number of 325,000 and his tour lasted about ten months. Mr. Singer figures that of this number, there were very few dissatisfied, and he figures that Woodruff will play to at least 400,000 this season in the new song comedy as it Is a better play and the star will show to greater advantage. The cast com prises many noted farceurs, more per haps than is usually seen in one organization, as follows: Madge Kennedy. Cassie Jamison, Agnes Everett, Inu Rorke, Lorraine Barnard. Messrs. Theodon Doucct, Herman Hirslfberg, Chas, Wellsley, Frank Decum, Thomas McKnlght. Wm. Jenner and others of note. The charming chorus are required to speak lines as well as to sing and dance. Many new creations in hats and gowns are displayed by the feminine portion of the aggrega tion. The production is carried com plete. "Raffles.' Curiously enough Kyrle Bellew, hero of "Raffles," and "The Thief," the two most notable "thief" plays of the de cade became an actor because of thlevr.s. When an adventurous middy on Her Mejcstr's frigate "Conway," he caught the gold fever and with an other young Englishman plunged into the bush of Queensiand where the new mines had been discovered. A year later his companion died. Young Bellew bagged his gold and started for the coast, prepared to buy a small sailing vessel. On his way back he was set upon by thieves and robbed of everything but the clothing he was wearing. Finally, landing in London penniless, he took the first position that was open to him. It was "gener al utility" man in a stock company. He will be seen in "Raffles" at the Gennett tomorrow. At the Murray. The three Gilden sisters in clog dances, songs and handsome costumes are a distinct novelty. They are three English girls, who having made a success on the English vaudeville stage decided upon a tour of this country. arriving here last summer for their first engagement. , Three girls in clog dances are unusual even among the unique acts found on the variety bill. and they are an interesting sight when they dance as well as the Gildens. They also appear in catchy song numbers which are well sung and well chosen. The island of Grenada, in the British West Indies, was bought by the French from the Caribs by a solemn treaty in the middle of the seventeenth century, and the price paid was two bottles of rum. TALK MOOT TARIFF Revision Discussed by the Wool Men. (American News Service) Washington, D. C. Feb. 1. Whether or not the National Association of Wool Manufacturers shall indorse the Administration plan of tariff revision, i including the tariff commission idea, probably will be made known at the association's annual meeting and dinner in this city tomorrow. No group of men in the country is more deeply concerned in the proper revision of the customs duties than are the wool manufacturers. Recently many of the great woolen manufacturers of New England and other sections are said to have come around to the view that one of the results of the work of the Tariff Board will be to protect their in terests. The plans for the dinner to follow the association's annual meeting tomorrow are of unusual significance. The special guests will be the three members of the Tariff Board and Chairman Henry C. Emery will make an address. Other speakers will be Vice President Sherman, Senator Ixnlge of Massachusetts and Senator Warren of Wyoming. The members of the Senate Finance, and House Ways and Means Committees also have been invited to the dinner. Bravery. "You spoke very admiringly of that man's courage." "Yes." HENS STARTED if! A IIOVEUOIITEST Egg-laying Tourney Begins Mid Scenes of Frenzied Excitement.
Philadelphia. Feb-s 1. With a flapping of wings and ?wild cackles of delight, accompanied by. crows of encouragement from the admiring cocks, thousands of hens started today in the first -; great international ; egg-laying contest. , Vineland, X. J-, is the scene of the remarkable competition,, which will continue for a year. Breeders and poultrymen of the entire world have entered their , crack biddies in the. race, which has for its principal purpose the testing of the egg-producing qualities of all breeds aud brands of hens. under t'ae best conditions. The entries are housed in buildings erected according to modern scientific plans and will be fed on the same kinds of food and kept under the same conditions. Each entry consists of ten hens, and is housed iu a separate pen, and a careful record of the number of eggs secured each day from each pen will be kept. All breeds and strains of birds are included in the contest. Similar contests have been held in Australia, and competitions on a small scale in this country, but this is the first international event of the kind ever attempted. It is alleged that poultrymen today have no acurate knowledge concerning what breeds are the most prolific egg. producers under the same-conditions, and this contest will definitely settle the matter. Loyal to Yankee Hen. Another matter to be decided will be the exact statute of the American hen compared with her sisters of other lands. The American hen is pitted against the world, and if book-making were permitted, there is no doubt that she would have plenty of backers.
