' David P. Whelan has about recovered from the effects of a badly sprained ankle. He has been compelled to be off the road for some time. ' A good story Is being told on Lebo by one of his very best' customers. Tho character of the customer and his reputation for truth and veracity has at all times been held above reproach. This customer when asked by the press thalrman whether he had seen Elmer lately responded that he had seen nothing of Lebo since the hold-up. "Since the hold-up!" exclaimed the press chairman. "Yes, tho hold-up." repeated tbe customer of great veracity. "If you promise to keep mum," he continued, "I'll tell you a great tale. Over in- Camden there is a fellow that Imagines that Lebo always carries with him a whole United States mint of money. This same desperado seeing the prune peddler tn Camden and knowing he was to make a little drive across the country planned to get some of Lebo's coin. He figured in his brain box that now was the accepted time, because there was traveling with Elmer at the time a smokeless bdklng powder man who was working with him.' If one didnt have money, the other surely would, or perhaps, " better yet both might have a little. Lebo and the baking powder man- with samples of the new smokeless variety, started out on the drive to Elkton. In the front of the carriage the sleepy driver held the reins over a more sleepy horse. Just oer the first big hill east of Camden the party was greeted with a stern command to hold up hands and get out of the rig. -This the driver did In a hurry and started at n dead run in his sleep' down the ravine The baking powder artist got out, on the side opposite the hold-up man, drop

Lebo remained the only visible victim to tbe man with the gun. "Well." shouted the gentlemanly intruder,, "shell out all you've got and do, it quick." Lebo trembled, but what was the use. He could see nothing to do but dig up. So up came the pockets and out came the pockets. His long pocketbook was laid at the side of the road. That surely looked good to the hold-up man. Gathering all tbe swag into a big rag he twisted it around a few times and commanding Elmer to stand perfectly still for twenty minutes under pain of death he quickly withdrew believing himself well repaid for his trouble. . After he bad gone about ten minutes the powder man crawled out from, under tbe rig apparently a very scared man and with a shaking voice inquired of Lebo his loss. The greatest loss, informed Elmer, was the, four T. P. A. checks I happened to have in my pocket I suppose they looked to the hold-up man- like -five -dollar gold pieces Just as they always look to me. Next to that the pocketbook was the. greatest loss. It cost me one-fifty.- Tbe contents wasn't much a check for $4.50, and 20 cents, I received at Camden, and a few letters and newspaper clippings I have been saving. 'Well, if that is all, said the smokeless baking powder salesman, 'you're lucky. I had more than that myself.' The two turned the rig around and drove quickly back to Camden and I have seen nothing of Lebo since. I suppose he is afraid to ahow up here now. He thinks the hold-up man is laying for him to get even," concluded the customer with a reputation for truth and veracity. . - Newt Jenkins was greatly surprised last Tuesday night when his wife invited several of his friends to aid him In celebrating his seventieth birthday. The evening was pleasantly spent and Newt arose to the occasion in great style. - After an elegant supper was .served the party pessed the evening In a most pleasant manner. Several of the party were given souvenirs by Mrs. Jenkins and these were
