Singer takes much pleasure in announcing Henry Woodruff in "The Genius," a new song comedy, for an appearance at the Gennett, February 8th. Mr, Woodruff is regarded as one of the most popular stars in America. His marked fitness for the part of "Jack Spencer" in the new play, the magnetism and personal charm with which he invests this character, have united to make this the most telling Individual hit of his career. The critics have been unanimous in their approval of the song comedy. also claiming that Woodruff shows off to rar greater advantage than he did in "The Prince of Tonight." the play which he was featured in last season. The cast to support the young star is one of merit and included a chorus of feminine beauty. Ten musical numbers of unusual value are introduced during the action of the play. The sale of seats will open February 6th. "Raffles." . Kyrle Bel lew. the famous English actor who appears in his famous success, "Raffles" at the Gennett theater, Thursday February 2, related the following tale which substantially supports the theory that Sir Henry Irving does not think much of Beerbehm Tree as an actor. "It was during the rehearsals of Robespierre,' at the Lyceum theater In London, where I played the part of Robespierre's Illegitimate son," said Mr. Bellew" that the following droll little comment was made by Sir Henry. At the time "The Three Musketeers" was running to crowded houses at her Majesty's theater, with Beerbohm Tree as D Artagnan and Mrs. Brown Potter as Nlladl. It was necessary for Sir Henry to obtain a horse for one of the scenes in "Robespierre, and Beveral were led on one morning for Sir Henry's Inspection. Now, among the animals which the purveyor of horseflesh trotted out was a white one which had been used by Mrs. Brown Potter In the second act of 'The Musketeers,' and also the white pony upon which Tree made his first appearance as DArtagnan. I spotted the latter at once. "Nice pony, nice fat little chap, eh? queried Sir Henry with a note of ap proval In his voice. 'Are you going to play D'Artagnan, too? I replied. "'No, of course not' said Sir Henry, 'Why do you ask?' "'Oh, merely because you seem to approve so of that nag. He's Tree's pony, and a mighty good actor.' "'Good actor? Explain. "Well, every night when Tree comes on he jumps off the pony, puts his arms around the animal's neck and begins to act, whereupon - the sagacious beast always yawns. That proves him to be a good actor, doesn't itr "'Good actor, nothing, retorted Sir Henry, with a mlschevious smile, ex cellent critic, though? " 'And he bought the pony. John Dalton. the famous English chemist and natural philosopher, without whose discovery of the laws of chemical combination chemistry as an exact science could hardly exist was wholly color blind. His knowledge of the fact came about by a happening of tue sort which we call chance. On his mother's birthday, when he was a man of twenty-six. he took her a pair of stockings which be bad seen In a shop window, labeled "Silk, the newest fashion." "Thee has bought me a pair of grand hose. John." said the mother, "but what made thee fancy such a bright color? Why, I can never show myself at meeting In them." John was much disconcerted, but he told her that he considered the stockings to be of a very proper go to meeting color, as they were a dark bluish drab. "Why, they're as red as a cherry. John." was her astonished reply. Neither be nor his brother Jonathan could see anything but drab in the 'stockings, and they rested in the belief ibat the good wife's eyes were out of order until she, having consulted various neighbors, returned with the verdict "Varra fine stuff, but uncommon scarlety." The consequence was that John Dalton becamvi the first to direct the attention of the scientific world to the subject of color blindness. "ii.j 1...,..
