A t Local Theaters At the Murray. Tho Harrison-West Trio, at the Murray theater this week is a great scream. The hit of this talented aggregation is Master Petltte, who is perhaps six years old. Little Pctitte is made up with a red wig and other accessories of a fifty year old citizen and If he keeps up his present gate as a comedian, he will be getting the biggest salary in the world by the time he wears long pants. He is a funny little fellow and pleases the old folks and children with his dancing and bright comedy. He Is far superior to the usual sing-song school of children actors. Gus Sun's Peerless Minstrels, Including the Klein, Ott and Nicholson musical act, and Tom Powell, the comedian furnish the major part of the entertainment "Raffles." Charles Frohman announced last night that Kyrle Dellew had chosen Gladys Hanson, the young Atlanta girl who has had such a remarkable stage career and who Is coming next Thursday evening with Mr. Belew to the. Gennett theater In "Raffles," as his leading woman for his tour around the world next fall. Miss Hanson was selected from among' a hundred or more leading women who have already made application to Mr. Frohman to Join Mr. Bellew's cruise. This gifted young woman has been supporting Mr. Belle w in leading roles for two years, and previous to that was leading woman with E. H. Sothern during the year that he played under different management from Julia Marlowe's. Considerable mystery attached itself to Mr. Bellew's selection, for whenever a leading woman wrote in to him asking for the coveted position he always replied In a veiled sort of way: "I am very sorry, but my leading woman has already been selected." It was not until last night, however, that Mr. Frohman allowed the announcement to be made that the person whom Mr. Bellew had In mind first and last was Miss Hanson. "The Genius." Small and young appearing girls, as wise as some of the more experienced gorls, have caused Mort H. Singer, the producer, who will offer Henry Wqodruff In. "The Genius" at the Gennett on February Sth, more convenience than any other one thing in the producing department. Hundreds of small girls are required Mr. Singer's musical productions and they will come to see him about the engagement with the shows, they look like mere children, and some of them are. but they swear they are of age, that their parents have no objection to their going on the stage, that they have been on before and every possible excuse an older person could think of. Last year two pretty little girls were engaged by Mr. Singer, they were with the show four days when it was learned they had run away from homo and were only fourteen years of age. The parents learned where they were and appealed to Singer, who im medially junicd on to the show and brought the girls back and turned them over to their parents. They were splendid little girls but were too young to be on the road. National Shortsightedness. "In this country." said the sociologist, "everything possible Is done to discourage people from marrying. "How so?" inquired one of the listeners. "Yon have to buy the marriage license, fee the preacher, the boys give you wbat they call a shlvaree. your friends throw old shoes at you, the newspapers print caricatures of you. life insurance agents bound you. you bump light up against the cost of living, and if you And you've made -a mistake you have to go to no end of trouble to get a divorce." Chicago Tribune. His Strong Point. This Is a pretty bad report card." ssld the father of the young hopeful ss he looked over the teacher's figures. "Too seem to be poor" in pretty much everything." "That's 'cause teacher only puts down th studies 1 ain't good In. I ought to have 'excellent' in one thing." "And what's that?" hopefully Inquired the fatber. "Fisbtla. I can lick any boy in tb class r Cleveland Plain Dealer. Shop. - Take your arm away, sir!" sharply exclaimed the Indignant maiden. Mr. Mote Is a well known young man. Mr. Mashmeyer has not determined his future activities. Now Woman's College In Egypt. The new woman soon may be an important factor in old Egypt. A woman's college has been started In Cairo along the same general lines as an 'American or English college for girls. The Institution was, started as a pari of a university founded two years ago by Trince Ahmed Fuad Pasha, uncle of the present khedive of Egypt. The prince Is enthusiastic about the new project, and. speaking of the school for Mussulman women, he said: "It was an experiment which I resolved upon after mature consideration, with. I confess, some little misgiving. For an oriental country, where the women are not emancipated and where, of course, they still wear the face covering called a yashmak, this was rather venturesome, but 1 am thankful to say that by the blessing of Providence people were very little scandalized, nud so success was assured. The young Indies are ordinary members of the community who are not Intended for 'any pro fesslon. In fact, we have not as yet any degrees either in law or in medicine, although that will come before Ionjr. 1 bone, with a suitable Increase of the means at our disposal. Lectures on the history of womankind, on motherhood, on household life, on hygiene, and so forth, are tbe staple Items in tbe teaching on tbe female side, and those on motherhood I consider of vital Importance, more particularly In a country like Egypt." English Clay Pipes. The clay pipe, wblcb is vanishing from tbe Fleet street cbophouse, was tbe only variety smoked in this country until quite recent times. The clay pipe made its appearance In England in tbe later years of tbe sixteenth century. WASHING FURNITUREEasy to Restore Tarnished Pieces to Original Freshness. "Very few people know that furniture ought to be washed," said a salesman in the furniture set-tiou of a large department store. "Yet." he continued, "it is tbe best thing one can do to keep furniture looking as well as it should. One should take a bucket of tepid rainwater and make a suds with a good pure soap. Then with a soft piece of cheesecloth all the woodwork should be washed. It is astonishing bow much dirt will come off. A second piece of cheesecloth should be wrung dry out of hot water. On this should be oured a tablespoon of first class furniture polish. The beat will spread tbe polish through tbe cloth. Next the furniture should be gone over with tbe second cloth. There will be no need of putting on more polish, for that much will do all one needs. Too many persons make tbe mistake of using too much polish and leaving it thick on tbe furniture, where it looks dauby and where it gathers more dirt." There Is furniture in homes today that is cast off because of its appearance when it might be brought back to its original freshness by this simple process of washing. Many persons do not know that a fine bit of mahogany is improved by careful washing, and hundreds of pianos have never been more than dusted in years. A square of cheesecloth for the washing and anotber for the polishing will do the work, and the result will well repay the effort. Indianapolis Nora.
Why Spiders. Fight. When two spiders fight there Is generally a good reason for the attack and the vigorous defense that follows. It is not generally known that ufter a certain time spiders become incapable of spinning a web from lack of l material. The glutinous excretion spun is limited; therefore spiders cannot keep on constructing new snares when tbe old ones are destroyed. But they can avail themselves of tbe web producing powers of their younger neighbors, and this they do' without scruple. As soon as a spider's web constructing material has become exhausted and its last web destroyed, it sets out in search of anotber home, and unless it should chance to find one that is tenantless a battle usually, ensues, which ends only with the retreat or death of the Invader or defender.
