DISCUSS JROSSIIIGS Board of Works Wants New . - Law. In order to get a statute through the state legislature placing cities of the second, third and fourth classes un der the same legislation as cities of tbe first class regarding railroad grade crossings, City Attorney A. M. Gardner will Immediately open correspondence with second, third and fourth class cities of Indiana. Cities of the first class may force railways to place crossings at the companies' expense, Including overhead crossings, according to the board of works. Cities of the other classes must pay part of the cost of construction, at least this is the interpretation of the city attorney. The matter came up in connection with the making of West Fifth street, as In case an overhead crossing is built over West Fifth street next year it will be necessary to make a big fill on that street, and the city does not wish to be put to additional expense of again making the street. There has been agitation for an overhead crossing at West Fifth street for some time, and last year the railroad company agreed to place on at that point but the. city was not financially prepared. City Engineer Charles favors the crossing at Seventh street, where neither a fill nor. cut would be necessary. JORDAN ASKS PEACE Noted Educator Wants Ar- . bitration. START BIG CAMPAIGN - A Religious Move of Great
Scope. American News Service) Chicago. Jan. 19. Plans for the most comprehensive and far reaching religious campaign ever conducted in America were discussed here today at a conference of leaders of the Y. M. C. A., the various church brotherhoods. the international Sunday school asso-J ciation and prominent ministers from many parts of the country. Nothing less than a thorough revltalization of the evangelical churches and other Christian agencies in ninety American cities Is the aim of the promoters of the movement, which will be known as the religion forward movement. Announcement will be made shortly of the names of the ninety cities in which the campaign is to be conducted. A committee of 100 is to be appointed in each city to consist of representatives of all religious organizations participating - in the campaign. In each city an effort will be made to vitalize the Bible classes in the Sunday schools, and to enroll men and boys in a systematic study of the scriptures. The plan adopted divides the work Into three divisions, that of preparation for the campaigns, an eight days appeal to non-Christian men and boys, and a follow-up program to conserve the benefits of the campaign. HAVE STAFF ARTIST A Local Paper Adds to Force. Its The Morning News in its issue today perpetrated a new journalistic stunt. Under glaring headlines of an account of an attempted lynching of a negro by West Richmond citizens, was produced a cut of Jack Johnson, in fighting costume, including boxing gloves, with the statement that the photograph was the likeness of Patrolman Fee, a white officer, and that it was taken by a "staff artist." When the irate officer saw the work of art he invaded the News office, it is stated, and as a result the offending edition was suppressed. A second edi tion, minus the Jack Johnson picture was then run off. Some "staff artist." COL. BRODER TO SUCCEED GEN: DAVIS (American News Service) Washington. Jan. 19. TURNED SELF Refuse Increases for His Assistants. fFalladium Special Indianapolis, Jan. 19. Salary increases asked for his assistants by the reporter of the supreme and ap pellate courts', were turned down by the legislative committee and the appropriation will remain the same as they were last year. The raises were $400 for the assistant reporter, $300 for the second and third assistant reporters and $100 for the stenographer and clerk. "I feel that the salaries of the people employed in this office are not commensurate with the ability and technical knowledge required," said Mr. Self In explaining his reasons for requesting the increase. "More than ordinary qualifications are required and the amounts asked for would be no more than persons having such qualifications should receive."
