HOT SENATE FIGHT FOR NjlECTICUT Contest to Prevent the Reelection of Senator Bulkeley Raging. (American News Servlc) Hartford, Conn., Jan. 6. The efforts of tbe opponents of United 8Ute 8enator Hulkeley to prevent his I reelection by the legislature which :has Just assembled here have brought 'about an exceedingly Interesting perlaona! contest In Connecticut. There 'are very powerful forces at work against him. and If he wins another term In the Henate in spite of them all it will be a remarkable victory. No Connecticut jolltlclan has ever faced o formidable a combination as that which now confront him. This combination includes a rival aspirant backed by unlimited wealth, largo and Influential section of th Connecticut press, tbe powerful New York, New Haven and Hartford company, and the indirect influence of the federal administration. Morgan (I. Hulkcley was elected to the United States senate In January, 1905. to nucieed flen. Joseph It. I lawley, having been mayor of Hartford from 1S0 to 18S8. and governor f Connecticut from im to 1S!3. II Is principal competitor for the nomination In tho legislature was the lato Rnmue. Fessenden of Stanford. Senator Orvllle H. Tlatt died n few weeks after Senator Hulkcley took his seat
In the senate, and another contest in the legislature took place Immediately. A vigorous aspirant for Mr. Tlatt's seat appeared In the person of Allen Paige of Hrldgeort. the two other candidates helng Mr. Hrandegee. then a member of the house of representatives, who finally won. and exGovernor Oeorge P. McLean, who had been for many years very closely associated with Mr. Hulkcley. In the triangular contest Senator Hulke'.ey warmly supported Mr. McLean, who cam within a few votes of obtaining the nomination In the legislature caucus. McLean Hie Rival. In the present contest, ex-Oovernor McLean appears as the only competitor of Senator Hulkcley. From being the closest of friends they have changed to the keenest of opponents. The Mcliean following give as the principal reason why Senator Hulkeley should retire at this time an alleged promise made, by the senator that he would, artcr one term in the senate, retire and make way for tho younger man. and do whatever he could to bring about Ills election. The attitude of the federal administration toward Senator Hulkcley grows naturally out of the opposition of the Senator to the nomination of Mr. Taft as the successor of Theodore Roosevelt In 1908. It may be recalled that the Taft men were strong enough In Connecticut to prevent either the United States senators being sent as delegates to the Chicago convention In that year. The support given by Senator Hulkcley to senator Foraker of Ohio In tho latter's defense of the Hrownsvllle soldiers was another matter that did not tend to Improve tho relations between the Connecticut senator of the White House. Kx-Oovernor McLean who Is fighting hard for the Hulkeley, toga, haa been one of the prominent men of Connecticut for many years. He began life as a reporter on a Hartford newspaper. His family was not rich and he had to make his own way in the world. He ftudled law, and entered the office of the Hartford lawyer, who was the principal representative of the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroad, und who for many years, when there were Important measures affecting the corporation before tho legislature, had charge of nil the arHy Kidneys Are Killing He! t j n . fj V, : "Jumping Jupiter" at the Gennett rangementa by which victories were won over opposing Interests and corporations. Mr. Mclean began to make money very rapidly in his profession. He became very active in politics, served several terms In the state legislature, was 1'nited Slates Attorney for Connecticut from iv.2 to and in lf0l wus elected to the governorship, serving two years. Mr. Mclean as governor took at of strong stand In favor of a revision of the state constitution. In order to ubolish the supremacy of tho small towns, which retained their power over the cities of the state, when a con stitutional convention was called, through their control of the convention. This is believed to have been one of the potent reasons for the defeat of Mr. Mclxan In his contest to succeed Senator Piatt in 19nr,. if Senator Hulkeley is victorious in his present owe his hold on fight for reelection he will triumph largely to this sumo the small towns. At Local Theaters At the Murray There is an amusing act on at the Murray this week in the Boy Behind the Suit Case, Henry Booker. A very mysterious looking suit case contains the costumes for the various lightniug changes tha Booker made right before the audience. Ills singing of an original song is very clever. The act is quite original. WUhelmt and his Imperial Yacht band of German Musicians occupies tho headline position at the Murray this week. WUhelmls Impersonations of the famous compsers are indeed finished and artistic and the accompanying orchestral selections from each composer are equally delightful. Lato motion pictures open and conclude the bill with Leonard Bro's. as Equilibrists, the Slane Duo adding to the bill. At Gennett Tonlgt. The Daughter of America will be presented tonight by tho Powell and Cohan Company at the Gennett. This Is the best bill In their" entire repertoire and one which Is more enjoyed than any other. Not only has Miss I'ortello a role which contains more comedy than any of her others but the principal character is portrayed by a female Impersonator. It Is not a caricature but a straight legitimate impersonation. Mr. Waddell has been a headllner In a number of the big city vaudeville houses and has fooled any number of people who pride themselves on knowing an actors makeup ata once. He has three costumes any one of which would be the envy of any real woman and his figure, walk and voice are all so perfect ns to cause a nine days wonder. Carl's Epigrams. I don't want to be a tragedian; there's enough tragedy In trying to be a comedian. The actor only what's funny; It's really knows. A good gesture words. Many a man Is thinks he knows the audience that is worth two bad amusing when he Isn't trying to be; but It takes an artist to be funny when he is striving to be. One tug at tha heartstrings may make a drama, but it takes a hundrcu laughs to make a comedy. Don't be too serious; a joke may prevent a tragedy. Too many comedians spoil the musical comedy. There Is more humor in a cab driver than In a clubman. If you can't be original, Imitate; some "Imitations" I have seen are original. Don't "kid" your audience: you're lucky If they don't '"kid" you. If you act the fool cleverly enough you're sure to please the public. You can sometimes hide your lack of wit by mispronouncing a word. The most cruel of all commands is; "Be Funny." Higher criticism Is all right but I prefer low comedy. Don't hug the center of the stage: tho audience will recognize you if you're good. If you can sing the last note of your song high enough your's sure of an encore; but ah, there's the rub a good line can't be repeated. Coming to the Gennett on Monday Richard Carlo (himself), will be setn in his greatest musical comedy succese, "Jumping Jupiter," after the sensational run at the Cort Theatre, Chicago. Read the Cincinnati papers, they are wild over the Carle, the play aud the company. Denmark has more telephones per capita than any other nation, with Sweden a close second.

TO TATTLE MUNCIE'S WIDE OPEN SECRETS Muncle, Ind., Jan. 6. On the charge of operating a gaming room, Robert B. Crabbs, the young Muncle tobacco dealer, who Bays the police, department is making a "goat" of him, was fined $10, and promptly appealed the case. He expressed his intention of "going after" gambling conditions In Muncle and said there would be de velopments of an interesting charact er relative to civic affairs within a few days. Crabbs made no defense in the city court, but was represented by former Congressman George W. Cro mer. One of the interesting features of the case is the allegation of Crabbs that Otto Williamson, chief of police, was until a few days ago, owner of a half interest In an uptown cigar store where card games for merchandise have been played for years. Crabbs also asserts that poker joints are run ning in the city without being molested hv 1hf rflicp and that the citv In i general is "open." Such a statement,' coming from the cashier of a bank, shows what confidence responsible people have in these pills. Mr. A. L. Wilson after trying them wrote: "l have used Dr. Miles' Nerve and Liver Pills and also your Anti-Pain Pills, on myself, with good results. The Liver Fills act so naturally and so easily that I scarcely know that I have taken a pill. Frequently being troubled with headache I take an Anti-Pain Pill and ret immediate relief la every case." By her side was her fiance, hap-, 1v ver her recovery and helping her plan the temporary dishes she would that 1 might be awful hungry, but as the days wore on I began to look on things to eat as something that was apart from me and in which I had no desire to share. At first I was weak and did want tbe good things I saw the others eating, but that desire passed. "I did not feel the pangs of hunger after the first three days, and I did not lose much strength.
