DAIRY CONDITIONS . GREATLYJPBOVED Only Twelve of Forty Selling in the City Arc Not Up to Standard Now.
Prevailing conditions In the dairies furninuiiiK milk in Klrhmornl received attention at a meeting of the bureau of municipal research on Wednesday ofternoon. Of the forty dairies there aro twelve which are not. entirely eatiBfiictory, although twenty-four have Improved ulneo the Investigation In tho aummer and four of th twelve re w concerns aro in excellent condition. The report wns made by I'rof. N. C. Helronimus, who Inspected tho d:tlr- ! in tho summer nnd again during tho holidays. The laUur Inspection as made both for the purpose of comparison with what they were In tho summer and also to obtain data which inlKht be useful. Prof. Ilelronimus had no complaint to maka of twontyfour of tho twenty-eight concerns which have been established several months. However four of the Id establishments had deteriorated In thla period he declared. Dairying evidently is profitable as evinced in his report that there were twelve new Arms. Fifty per cent is considered a good grade, but twelve dairies do not have this percentage, still there are several, mostly larger concerns which have not ratings above 50 per cent. For the present no publication of those dairymen operating unclean dairies will bo made, the committee believing that te dairymen will clean up and otherwise improve condition, making them eligible to a higher standing. Milk inspector Flook has taken no action for the sume reason, It being his policy to give the dairymen all needed opportunity to perfect conditions, but if his advice Is not heeded, then ho expects to prosecute. Whether the city has been paying tin exorbitant rent for Are hydrants as a question discussed and debated but resulted in no decision. Some declared that the franchise had been violated In both implied and in Its written expressed terms. These holding this opinion believed that the city already had paid several thousand dollars In excess for fire dydrant rent. The gas question was brought up and tabled until the next meeting.
