Stepping Across the Atlantic

The amateur engineers, who build railroads on the maps without regard to the difficulties of nature or climate or the vulgar consideration of making them pay. have turned from the simple plan of joining Asia and America by a ferry across Bering Strait, connecting with thousand mile long roads through the Alaskan wilds and the Siberian tundra, to the less frigid but equally proHtable project of bridging the Atlantic between Africa and Brazil. From Cape Verde to Cape Saint Roque the distance Is about one-third that from England to New York; the Mauretania or the Lusitanla could make the trip from Pernambueo to Bathurst on the Gambia or Dakkar In Senegambla In two days. Why not establish a line that would cut down the ocean passage materially? Tho railroad connections would be an easy matter on paper. To the intending British tourist or business man in a hurry It would mean a journey on the French and Spanish railroads, trans-shipment from Gibraltar to Ceula. and another very long trip on a road yet to be built that must pass through the land of the genial Moroccans and the sands of the Sahara, lie would find himself In a port more noted for pestilential fevera than any other attraction, and would be conveyed to Pernambueo, which is also not looked upon as a health resort. Thence he would have to travel by Brzilian railroads, yet to be constructed but of formidable length, to Kio Janeiro and to Argentina or Chile, which would be his probable goal. That there are chances of adventure on such a trip is undeniable, and it promises plenty of variety. Even after the imaginary lines arc completed, however, the traveler will find more comfort, we fancy, and will certainly get to his objective point sooner, by taking a tramp steamer. For the shipper of freight the advantages o the route arc even greater. At a time when Manchester has built, a eobtly ship canal and Paris Is endeavoring to become a seaport so as to do away with trans shipment the suggestion is offered that cargoes bo shifted to and from trains at three points at least, and that they be entrusted to Spanish and Moroccan and Brazilian roads. With every country improving its internal waterways for the sake of economy, these dreamers want to do away, as far as iossible with tho cheapest and finest highway of commerce, the ocean. Humanity In War.

The first mau, so far as history can apeak on the subject, to do anything to mitigate the hardness of the usages of war was Marcus Aurelius, the noblest of the Roman emperors. Of this illustrious man I)e Quincey writes, "Marcus Aurelius tirst resolutely main tained that eertalu indestructible rigbis belonged to every soldier simply as a man, which rights capture by the sword or nny other accident of wa could do nothin; to shake or dimin ish." The Carolina Special of the Southern Railway which was put on between Charleston, S. C, and Lexington Ky.. on Monday of this week, is a first class train in every respect. From the earliest days of railroad construction in the United States It has been the aim of Charleston and South Carolina to obtain a direct route and through service to the Ohio river and the west. This ambition is realized in the new service of the Southern railway. The Kansas City and Memphis railroad has been chartered in the state of Arkansas, with a capital of $6,000,000. Construction work has already begun. The road Is to start at Rogers, Ark., with its terminal at Memphis, and branches will extend from the main line to Faulkner and Little Rock and from Rogers to Siloam Springs and Eureka Springs, with Wagner, Okla., as the ultimate terminus. The new road will be 350 miles long.
