The international union has Informed the San Francisco, Cal, culinary unions that it will aid financially the Igbt to exclude Asiatics in local saloons and restaurants. Child labor laws abroad are in many essential respects but poorly enforced, and the penalties Imposed for violations are ridiculously small and of practically no deterrent value. In Italy the whole Institution of factory inspection is of ao recent datet and as yet so poorly organized that it may be said to be nonexistent throughout a large part of the kingdom. An old age pension plan, giving $150 a year to all members of the Carpenters' union sixty years old or over, after a continuous twenty-five year membership in the union, is being submitted to a referendum vote in that organization throughout the country. James Lucas of Chicago, one of the general organizers for the Brotherhood of Painters and Decorators, Is in Minneapolis, Minn., for the purpose of organizing, if possible, the car paintetrs. VALUE OF UNREST Hope the Impelling Force In All Human Effort. HELPS LABOR MOVEMENT. Without Desire For Bettor Living Conditions the Worker la Lost Trade Unionism the Great Uplifting Fores f the Masses. The spirit of unrest, coupled with an bonest desire for better and more farotable working conditions, is inborn In the minds and hearts of nearly all mankind and Is kept alive by the more enthusiastic and boldly Inclined. It la well for the workers that this Is true. Whenever the masses lose bope and ambition and cease to straggle the human family will commence to go backward. This Is true In all walks of life, but ee pec tally so In the trade anion movement In our unions we have the radical, tbe enthusiastic, the young and the old. the men of experience, the hopeless, the Impatient, the ones with faith and the doubter and many minds with many different opinions. Tbe great task Is to harmonize all these conflicting elements In a manner that will enable ns to make headway In a. permanent and substantial form that will do the most good for tbe greatest number. The young. Inexperienced enthusiast, while meaning well and with tbe best Intentions, win stake all In one effort, while tbe older and more experienced, although Just as anxious to advance the cause and desirous of getting as much, but with riper Judgment, counts tbe consequences and weighs well the chances of success. He is not willing to rush to almost certain destruction with tbe chances 100 to 1 against him. He knows from experience tbe time, money, labor and self sacrifice that It has cost to build up and maintain tbe International union and Is not willing to risk its destruction on the turn of a card. These men are the real leaders and have made tbe union possible. The enthusiast Is Just as necessary as the old timer with the right heart and riper Judgment He arouses the dormant and hopeless to action, and great good follows if the majority follow the ,wlse counsel of tbe more conservatively Inclined. The man of Judgment who is honestly Inclined and has the courage of his convictions will counsel and advise taking what we are sure of today and abiding tbe chance to Improve a little tomorrow or when the time Is opportune. It takes more courage to do this than It does to stand up and play to the gallery, tbe prejudice and passion of Inflamed members. The pathway blazed by tbe true union man with ripe Judgment and experience to back It up always leads to the greatest good for the greatest number. In a bitterly contested strike In a competitive trade like ours the man of experience, ripe Judgment knowledge, fntrness and the courage to stand up and be counted is a boon to the movement a credit to himself and the trade union movement and will live always In grateful remembrance In the minds and heart of the membership and in tbe history ot our moTemeut-Clgir-makers' Journal.

NO MORE CREDIT TO EARLHAM STUDENTS Credit will not be extended to Earlham students by the treasurer of tbe institution. Hereafter those who can not pay for their tuition in advance of the opening of the term will be quietly invited to return home. The college has been made the victim so often by unscrupulous people that a goodly portion of the debt now banging over the coilege is blamed to the credit system. The trustees do not see the value in accumulating obligations by giving what Is virtually free instruction. Cash talks in the future. Some Consolation. He was a frugal Scot and when tbe collection plate csme round dropped In a florin In mistake for tbe bumble copper. Speedily discovering his mistake, however, he stepped softly down tbe aisle and requested tbe oof gatherer to give him back the coin, which request was politely but firmly refused. A shade of disappointment flitted over the northerner's face as be walked slowly back to bis pew. "Aweel," he said, "It's a loss, but there's some sma' consolation in reflectln' It's a bad one. It might have got me into trouble anywhere else." London Telegraph. Dickens and His Wife. Commenting ou the unhappy relations between Dickens and bis wife, Goldwln Smith wrote in one of bis last papers: "It was a common case. Dickens had married at a low level, and his wife had not risen with him; otherwise there was no fault on her side. Tbe matrimonial history of writers of works of imagination has often been unhappy. Their Imagination turns the woman Into an angel, and then they find that she is a woman." ' RED CROSS SEALS Red Cross seals are now on sale, a large number have been sent to Richmond to be disposed of. The Palladium has these seals on sale. Call for them at the business office. By ED WIS A. NYE. Copyright, 1908, by Edwin A, Nye THE CONSNRACY. Did you know there is a conspiracy to kill you? Welt there Is. It Is not a deliberate plot perhaps, and it Includes some of your friends, but it may kill you just the aame. The cry of this coalition all through the winter days will be "Shut the door."' ThU conspiracy demands that every bottle In which humans live shall be corked tight and sealed, and the purpose of the league is to shut off your supply of fresh air. You get little enough oxygen even in summer. Now the conspirators demand that it be superheated and rebreathed over again until there is not enough of tbe vital clement left to sustain a canary bird. You must fight this league, and your slogan should ever be "Open the windows r If you amount to anything you must have red corpuscles in your blood. And the only way to get them is by deep breathing of pure air. It is more important that you should oxygenize your blood than that you should eat or drink. Lungs cannot go long without sustenance, like stomachs. Bread without oxygen will not make pure blood. Therefore down with the conspiracy! If any man shuts the doors and fails to pull up the windows, shoot him ou the spot or words to that effect In answer to the machinations of the foul Intriguers leagued to kill you by shutting off your oxygen you should open the windows at the tops, mind you, or the transoms. Defeat the plotters. Half the race Is dying because of the conspiracy. Get all the fresh air you can command. .Distend your lungs by outdoor exercise. Walking is good. Empty and fill your lungs repeatedly. God did not make you to be choked by impure air. - And when you sleep pay attention, please open the windows top and bot torn if possible, but surely at the tops You are on the defensive against this general conspiracy. " Therefore remember tbe cruel law Is it cruel? the law of the survival of the fittest Open your windows! Down with the conspiracy! Tha Natural Effect. Father From my observation of him last night I came to the conclusion that young roan of your was rather wild. Daughter Of course. It was your constant observation that made blm wild. He wanted you to go upstairs and leave us alone.

It quickly gives heat, and with one filling of the font burns steadily for nine hours, without smoke or smell. Has automatic-locking flame spreader which prevents the wick from being turned high enough to smoke, and is easy to remove and drop back, so the wick can be cleaned in an instant. It has a cool handle and a damper top. An indicator always shows the amount of oil in the font. It has filler-cap which does not need to be screwed down ; it is put in like a cork in a bottle, and is attached" to the font by a chain. The burner body or gallery cannot become wedged, because of a new device in construction, and consequently it can always be easily unscrewed in an instant for rewicking. The Perfection Oil Heater is finished in japan or nickel. It is strong, durable and well made, built for service, yet light and ornamental.

'Red Cross Society, the three local newspapers, to which the Richmond Bupply of Christmas Seals were sent to be disposed of to the public. The Christmas Seals' agencies for this paper are named above. Each seal sells for one cent and every cent invested in these Seals swells the Red Cross fund for its war against tuberculosis the great white plague. Heretofore Richmond people have had only indirect benefit from tbe fund realized by the sale of these Seals, but next year Richmond will receive a percentage of the state fund, which will be used In maintaining a city nurse for tubercular patients or for sending them to hospitals for expert treatment. Eventually local Red Cross workers hope to have . a tuberculosis hospital established here.
THE DIGNITY OF LABOR. It is unfortunate that our system of education, particularly in our public schools, is such that the vast majority of children, even the sons and daughters of the working class, desire to become professional men and women because they have an idea that such work is more genteel than that in the trades, with tbe result that the professions are overcrowded with people who are unfitted for the occupations which they have selected as their life work. The next great task of our educational institutions is so to dignify mechanical labor that It will appeal to the boys because of the possibilities in it for them. This will raise the artisan class to a higher and saner level and will give the efficient worklngman the place in society to which he is Justly entitled. It will take away the false conception, present even among workingmen. that to toll with one's hands Is to accept a menial position. Rev.
