LOCAL FIRE LOSS SMALL THIS YEAR
Only One Big Blaze in Past ' Eleven Months Police Had a Bus Year. Three thousand dollars will cover the fire damage In Richmond, daring the year ot 1910. according to Fire Chief Miller. This estimate la made with the expectation ot no more large fires before the firat of January. The "only fire In 1910 of any magnitude 'waa tlN blase that burned the roof from the rear ot the Balllnger Printing company, on South Seventh street, during July. Up to date there have been 126 alarma, making the average loss for each fire approximately only $25, far undor that of any previous year during the last decade. Richmond baa been peculiarly fortunate In regard to fires during the last few yeara. In 1909 the fire loas waa about $50,000. Tbe heavy loas was at the P. A N. Lawn Mower plant'e fire, where about $45,000 damage waa done. There were no other . large flrea during 1909. The only other large fire of recent yeara waa the Colonial blase which did more than $75,000 damage. Chief K. Miller, In speaking of the danger of Christmas tree flrea, said the probability of flrea from this source Is becoming less and less dangeroua each year, because so many people are using small electric lights to replace the candles on Christmas trees. Report of the Police. The police have had a busy year and by the end of the month the arrests at the present rate will total 750. The number ot drunks arresed so far aurpasses that of any other violations, being about 350. There were 91 arrests fcr assault and battery. The larceny arreata will total nearly 50. Two murderers were arrested and both sent to the penitentiary. Both . arrests wero made In April. Charles Rcvaleo was apprehended and confessed, to Chief ot Police Qormon, the

THEIR PHUT WORSEJHAll DEATH Brazilian Naval Mutineers Are Sentenced to Hard Labor in Swamps. (American News Service) Rio Janeiro, Dec. 16. Punishment more dreaded than death will be meted out to the Brazilian naval mutineers who were taken from the battleships Sao Paulo. Minaa Geraes. De Oro and Bahia. It waa announced today that the men will be sentenced to hard labor and shipped into the Amazon swamps to work upon tbe new Madeiro-Mamore railroad. The line will penetrate the most dangerous of the South American wildernesses, running over trestle work and embankments which must be constructed in swamps infested with poisonous reptiles, malaria and so wild that the foot of man has never trod certain portions of them. The men are still con lined in the fortress on Villegagnon Island. It Is reported that the ringleaders in the revolt have already been sentenced to death by secret courtmartial and that the shipping of prisoners Into the interior will start within a few days.
Jean Candide, leader of the first mutiny, has been unexpectedly placed under arrest and spirited away to some unknown prison. Although normal conditions here are gradually being restored, suppressed excitement prevails.

This is erroneous la every particular. There is not a case of diphtheria in New Garden township at present nor baa there been in two or three years. "We have one case of scarlet fever in the township. the little daughter of William Ryan, and in a ligit form. The primary room at school (not the entire school) was closed on Wednesday morning until after danger from contagion from this one case had passed. No new cases have developed and the health officer baa advised that the room resume work Monday morning. A DRUNK ARRESTED The drunkest drunk ever arrested by the local police department was William Cobine. a Fountain City farmer, "pulled" at tbe Pennsylvania police statlnon Thursday noon. The man was lying, flat in the lobby and causing a disturbance by bis cries. Many women were badly frightened. It was with difficulty that Patrolmen Lawler and Vogelsong arrested the man. He had a check for $100 on the Fountain City National bank.
LOCAL MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF IN HAND After loading a twenty-two rifle the gun waa accldentaly discharged and Lemuel Brooks, of Easthaven avenue, shot himself through the hand. The bullet entered the wrist. It passed through the thumb and came out at palm of the hand. The wound, while very. painful, Is not at all serious and there is little probability of blood poisoning.
