NOT MANY CHANGES ill TEAM MANAGERS

Boston Nationals and St. Louis Americans May Get New Pilots in 1911. (AmrrUnn News Horvl'-t) Nw Vork, Dec. 16. One of the Intonating subjects of comment at the hltf gathering of baseball men here this k lias been that relating to changes among the managers of the Mg t'atuo teams for Ihe coming Heamn. The discussion has brought to light Hi" fart that the managerial changea will be fewer In number than In any irMlin; ur In this history of the major organizations. As matters stand ut present there will bo only one new major league manager In the field when the curtain rises in April next for the season of 1911. The only certain switch will be It:ado In the make-up of tho St. Louis Americans, from whoso management Jurk O'Conner was ilejosed last fall. The only other change that Is at all likely Is In the Uoston Nationals. Fred Lake Is signed up for another year, It Is understood, but with a change In the club ownership It Is possible that another man may bo selected to pilot tho team next season. A List of Changts. Tho number of chauEes among the managers Is small as compared with the records of former years. During the paHt eight years no less than fiftyfive men have managed clubs In the National snd American leagues, the National having had twenty-six and the Americana' twenty-nine. Some of tliese men have drifted from one ciub to another In the same circuit, and have occasionally transferred their operations to the other league. Patsy Donovan, who will again lead the Kostoii Americans, has had experience with tho Pittsburg and St. Louis Nationals, Washington Americans and with llrooklyn. Ned llanlon retired, held the reins over DaUlmore, Brooklyn and Cincinnati, and Clark Griffith won a penant for ' Chicago, then tried to win for the New Vork Americans before landing a berth with Cincinnati. Joe Kelly of Toronto, guided the Cincinnati team, dropped back Into the Eastern, and Jumped .out again into the National at the helm of the Uoston club. Hugh Duffy went from Milwaukee In 1993 to the Philadelphia Nationals,' and in 1007 drifted into the Eastern league at the head of the Provldercc, lil. passing up to big league ranks two years ago as the manager of the Chicago Americana. A I Local Theaters I "Topsy Turvy Flats." i If you want to laugh, if you want to forget your daily cares for a short hour, and fill that hour with wholesome amusement and recreation, go to the New Murray theater and witness a performance of the show which is holding forth there this week. "Topsy Turvy Flats." More laughable situations, more good musical singing, dancing and jokes are pulled off In this little comedy than any show that has appeared on the local stage for many a day, and the fact that the public in Richmond has realized this has been evidenced during the week by the large crowds which have daily hurried to the New Murray to witness tho performance. "The songs sung in this show have at once attained popularity and "I'm a member of tho Midnight Crew" as Bung with the assistance of a pretty and well-costumed chorus and effective stage spttings Is today being whistled as a refrain by even the newsboys on the Krecf.'- which some great critic has said is the greatest test of popularity. Everything about "Topsy Turvy Flats" Is so clean and each character Is so well represented in a realistic way, that the musical comedy has proved to be ' a real innovation and pleasure to all local vaudeville lovers. Howe' Pictures. "There must be a story In back of a picture like that." said the reporter to Lyman H. Howe after seeing the latter' reproduction of the eruption of Mt. Etna." "There is," replied Mr. Howe. "What is it?" quickly came from the alert scribe. "The picture," said Mr. Howe, "i one of the kind taken on sudden impulse and In a moment of high tension. The camera recorded Images of a critical moment far more graphic than a writer' pen could describe because the photographer kept his hgad when all his assistants flel panic stricken, under stress of great excitement. Hut here is the story. When ominous deep toned rumblings and earth tremor had occurred for several day in tho vicinity of ML Etna, I ent there one of my most fearless photographers with instructions to 'hang around' in case something happened. That more happened than either of u expected is best proven by the picture Itself. The rest of the story is best told by my photographer himself. In his letter describing the experience he says: "After securing the scene of the crater emitting the huge volumes of vapor, steam and smoke a tremendous crash occurred. The earth shook violently. There wa a rush of gaseous air that almost asphyxiated the camera squad. Some of them obeyed the first impulse of

flight born of terror and falling volcanic missiles. At this moment I bad a chance to get a wonderful picture, but on looking around for my guide who had the panoramic camera, I saw him hot footing It over the lava beds. Realizing that if I did not get that camera I would miss the chance of a life time to get a picture at the brink of a volcano in violent activity, I called to him to stop. He yelled back be would be killed if he stopped and continued in his panic stricken rush faster than ever. Then I called to him to drop the camera Fortunately he obeyed though half crazed with fear. I can assure you I lost no time in unpacking the camera and getting back to the edge of the crater to take the picture which I have just forwarded, to you.' " This picture will be shown by Mr. Howe at the Gennett tonight with many other scenes that are equally Interesting, such as the King's funeral in London; a ride up the Eiffel Tower; the fiords of Norway; life on a training ship;' the Alps in winter; a Japanese jubilee; building the Grand Trunk Pacific railway, etc.

THE HESSIANS. TH Wero Good Soldiers, and Sorre Sscarce Csod Americans. TL-re Is a iopular belief among some people that the Ilyssiun mercenaries brought here by the British government to rijjbt the Americans remained here niter the war was over and that their descendants constitute a considerable clement of the Pennsylvania Germaus of today. Comparatively few i remained here after the war. because the British government was und'-r contract to return such as escaped tl:o casualties of tin war after It was over. The f?v th;tt remained made good tiri zeus. as tb"y made the very b-'Nt soldiers 'against the Americans, nnd whenever it was prcctlcnl to d sj they were put l'l the most responsible places by the British commanders. The intense hatred at one time against the ; called Hessian soNIiers. some of which stilt lingers with th? present gen. ration, is very unjust, because they did not volunteer to fight against the Americans, but they wer forced ir.:i the British service by the impecunious t n::::i princes who so'd them to th' British like so many slaves. LIBERTY BELL

Its Connection With the Declaration of Independence, The famous Liberty bell was cast in London in 1752, brought to America and subsequently recast in Philadelphia. It bears the inscription, "Proclaim Liberty Throughout the World and to All the Inhabitants Thereof." It was cracked while being tolled after the death of Chief Justice John Marshall In 1S33. It Is kept on exhibition in Independence hall. Philadelphia. It has had a fictitious importance owing to the popular belief that Ita ringing proclaimed the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 177V. Concerning this belief, however, Friedenwald In his "Declaration of Independence" (1904) says: "There is no shadow of authority even for associating the ringing of the bell with the announcement of the agreement upon independence. The mythical legend of the blue eyed boy waiting outside the door to give the signal to the man in the bell tower Is the product of the fertile imagination of one of Philadelphia's early romancers. George Lippard, who first gave currency to It in his appropriately called 'Legends of the Revolution. This book was published in 1S47." New York American. D 0 Big sales.
