HOLIDAY TRADE 111 RICHMOND IS GOOD Larger Market Has Been Developed and Merchants Kept Very Busy.
Business so far during the holiday ahopping season has surpassed that of the corresponding period of 1908 and 1909 and more than equals that for the best year ever experienced in Richmond. If business from now to Christmas Is aa good aa the first part of the holiday season the merchants claim that the season will be the best In the history of te city. The excellent business done Is general In all lines. Quite the large majority of the Christmas shoppers are "planking down" the cash and not asking for credit, another feature which la encouraging to the merchants. At one of the banks Jt was estimated that the business done In Richmond each day during the season has been between $75,000 and $100,000. In addition to the trade of Richmond residents, the merchants declare there are a large number of farmers and residents of ) nearby towns who are in the city every day. Nearly all of these people live within a short dlatance of Richmond, but quite a few are strangers to the merchants and It Is believed they are doing the bulk of their shopping here for the first time this year. Undoubtedly the advertisements ' which the Fall Festival gave the city has had much to do with this and la one of the indirect benefits. Another reason credited for the expansion of the local market Is the fact people have bad their fill with mall order houses and have found the experiment a costly one. All merchants handling dry goods and shoea will keep open after 6 p. m. beginning Thursday. Jewelers and other dealers have been keeping open of evenings for a week. The business men have perfected an organization and their clerks are receiving more consideration than before. The merchants have talked early purchasing until this reform haa been accomplished.
