A drilled or 'plugged" coin has berob something of a curiosity. Every . one remember tb Inconvenience of tbM mutilated coins. It was a matter of dally occurrence to find oneself In possession of a silver, gold or even nickel coin defaced in this way. Komettmes the hole was filled with aom baser metal; often it was left

perfectly obvious, ana no careim person need bo deceived. Nowadays tb work of defacing coins Is reduced to a fin art. The old. crude -method of plugging the coins will not suffice, since the general public and the government are far more intolerant of th practice than ever before. If the precious metal Is to be robbed from the coins It muit b don so rlevrrly that even the expert will be 4M-elvHl. It no longer pays to mutilate nickel or even silver coins, so, except in exceptional cases, it Is only th gold coin which ar mutilated. This practice, commonly known as "sweating, requires considerable skill, and tb ingenuity displayed is often amazing. Tho "sweating" must be dono In uncli a way that the coin will appear perfect, even to the closest observer. The federal government will not permit any gold coin to circulate th weight of which Is below the point of legal tolerance, which is fixed at onebalf of 1 per cent. If a coin Is found to be lighter than this it is stamped with a large I to indicate its lightness, and is returned to the bank or th Individual who last handled it. Th only redress of the owner is to have the coins sent to Washington to b remlnted. Tb owner must stand the loss in weight, which is often considerable. In cases where the coin bss been "sweated" an investigation may follow, with criminal prosecution. On of th most insidious methods of "sweating" and perhaps th most difficult of all to detect Is the electroplating method. The gold coins ar placed In a chemical bath, and part of the gold la detached by electricity and deposited on some other object. In this way th gold Is removed with perfect evenness from all parts of the coin. Tb letters and general design or the milling may be slightly dulled in the process, bat only as It might be from general wear and tear. Th lightness of th coin will be detected by the scale at th treasury, but In tb meantime such a coin, may pass from band to band for a long time without arousing suspicion. It is obviously exceedingly difficult to trace the offender. Another baffling method is to split th coin and remov th gold from th inner surface. Tb hoi Is then filled up with some baser metal, so that th weight will be th same, and th two sides ar then welded together. It is posalbl to take a dollar's worth of gold or mor In this way from a twenty dollar gold piece. If the work be skillfull done It Is ImDosslblo to detect such a coin by its weight, and the only clew will be in some naw in tn mut ing. Naturally it takes a trained, ex nertenced eve to nick out such a coin, MeanwhU th gold plec has probablr circulated for dais or even months, and it la exceedingly difficult to trace th offender. On of th commonest methods of "sweating" Is to shake up. a number of gold coins In a chamois bag and pre serve tb dust and microscopical parti clea which hav been loosened. The bag la first moistened, so that the gold will adher to It, and is afterward burned and th gold assayed. The bruises or dents on the coins will appear to hav been mad In th ordinary handling. Th profit from this treatment Is small, but many people aeem to find profit in it. Tb question arises if th ingenuity and labor tbua xnendd would not bring a larger re turn it devoted to some legitimate work. Tb men who handle th gold become marvelously expert in detecting th "sweated" coins. In hsndling millions of dollars' worth of gold a defaced coin will rarely get past them. Th coins ar spread out in trays before them and turned over and the lie-lit coins nicked out. A slight flaw . in th milling, a dulled appearance of th Uttering or a suspicious nick on th surfac will be quickly Identified. As a final test th scales, which will weigh a single hair, ar resorted to. . and if th slightest discrepancy can h found every coin is examined sepa rately until the faulty one has been discovered.
