TV0 DIG LEAGUES TO HOLD MEETINGS

Policy of American National Sport for the Next Season to Be Adopted.

WILL RE-ELECT LYNCH

He Will Again Head Nation- - al League Ban Johnson Not In Fear for Job.

(American Nw Pervl: New York. Dec 10. Th policy on which our national sport, baseball will be carried out during the aeaon of 1911 will be determined in this city during the following week, when the directors of the National. American and Eastern Baseball leagues will hold separate meetings for the election of officers and appoint a schedule committee to arrange for the number of games to be played next season. It Is Improbable that any changes of note will be made either In present lineup of officers, or the rules now governing the game; yet there is Just enough dissatisfaction evident to make the baseball situation of Interest to the "bug." who. in this dull midwinter sporting season has little but the annual pilgrimage of the baseball squad to the south to look forward to. It Is confidently stated by, Tom Lynch's many friends that bis re-election to the presidency of the National league, when that body meets on December 13, will be carried with ease. At least so his two trusty lieutenants President Garry Herman of the Reds, and Barney Dreyfuss of the Pirates, both of whom have been working hard In his behalf, state. They have lined up the Cincinnati. Boston, Pittsburg and New York clubs for Lynch and say that they will be able to control at least one of the other clubs should the boom of Mr. Robert P. Kennedy of Unlontown, Pa., show signs of .developing presidential else. On the other band Mr. Kennedy's many friends have been quietly circulating among the clubs and it Is rumored that he may make a bid for the honor. Johnson Has a Kick. Ban Johnson has no fears as to the outcome of the national meeting December 14. because of his election to the presidency for a term of twenty years, but he Is going to make a strong kick on the post season barnstorming tours of the players. "The real cause for dissatisfaction In this aggregation, says he. "is the barn storming tours, following the close of the title series. To -have a band of champlona out of condition, troop off to other countries and play with teams In , the highest stage of perfect condition and perchance suffer defeat, cheapens baseball. These exhibitions will have to stop. Mr. Johnson states that It Is his opinion that .both the National and American organisations will adopt the 154 game schedule for the ensuing season. - With the Marathon King. Pat Powers, president of the Eastern league, however, there seems to be some probability that his term of office will expire on the day of the conference, December II. Mr. Edward G. Barrow of Toronto, has long been credited with a desire for Tat's scalp and those In the "know say that should P. T. refuse to step gracefully to one side, a battle of such heat will follow that the Kkstern league may split upon the rock of dissension. Mr. Powers says, "The Eastern league will have Its annual meeting at one o'clock, Monday, December 12, and any who want to know whether or not I shall run tor re-election can come to me at 10 a. m. on that day and I will divulge my plans to them." None of the Eastern league ' magnates who have gathered at Gotham would say positively that "Pat" would run for re-election but there seems to bo a strong undercurrent of opinion that Patrick Marathon Powers would bo right there when the bell rings and put In his little bid for a seat at the head of the table.

Genius and Mediocrity. Coraellle did not speak correctly the language of which he was such a master. Descartes was silent In mixed society. Themlstocles, when asked to play on a lute, said, "X cannot fiddle, but I can make a little Tillage Into a great city." Addison was unable to converse In company. Virgil was heavy colloquially. La Fontaine was coarse and stupid when surrounded by men. The Countess of Pembroke had been often heard to say of Chaucer that his silence was more agreeable to her than his conversation. Socrates, celebrated for hut written orations, was so timid that he never ventured to speak In public. Dryden said that be was unfit for company. Hence It has been remarked. "Mediocrity can talk; It Is for genius to observe. The Art ef Carpentry, now many common figurative expressions In our language are bor

rowed from the art of carpentry may be seen from the following sentence: The lawyer who filed the bill, shaved the note, cut an acquaintance, spilt a hair, made an entry, got up a case, framed an indictment, impaneled a Jury, put tbem Into a box. n3ed a witness, hammered a judge and bored a whole court, all in one day, has since laid down law and turned carpenter."

At Local Theaters"

Howe's Travel Pictures. "Just a minute. Mr. Photographer," said the late King Edward just as he was about to photographed, "not without Caesar" the pet dog. As the most magnificent funeral pageant la all history wends its course through London and Tv'InSsor, and Immediately behind the gun carriage bearing the

coffin, crown and sceptre, may be seen the mournful Caesar trotting alongside of his attendant. It Is a

strange scene this solitary little dog

surrounded by all the pomp and pag

eantry of kings, princes, field-marshals admirals, potentates, dignitaries and ambassadors from everywhere, including our own Col. Roosevelt. Every detail of it will be shown with remarkable distinctness in the Gennett on Friday, December 16th. As an Indication of its Importance and perfection the Philadelphia Press says of It: "For the first time in the history of moving pictures these scenes reproduce not only all the glory and glitter of this historic occasion, but such admirable Judgment is exercised that the audience feels It Is 'rubbing elbows' with the mighty ones of earth and becomes perfectly familiar with their faces, carriage, and mannerisms without the discomfort of being crushed In the London throngs." But the program includes other fea

tures such as a ride up the Eiffel

Tower; the eruption of MU Etna; the fiords of Norway; a Japanese jubilee; a marvelous track-laying machine; life on a training ship; the geometregraph, etc., which make the Lyman H. Howe Travel Festival one of the most Important booking of the season.

"Polly of the Circus. There is a famous paragraph in the

discipline of a great church which puts

the circus rider under the ban along with the other objectionable amusements. The liberal element of the denomination wo strove In vain to have

the paragraph expuged, might have

their opponents invited to see Frederick Thompson's big production of "Polly of the Circus" and which will be seen at the Gennett on Thursday, December 22. This is one of the greatest scenic productions on the road and it is due to that genius, Frederick Thompson, of Hippodrome and Luna Park, Coney Island, New York Citj frame. It is an exquisite little idyl full of humanity and humor a three ring circus with a sermon thrown In. The company is well balanced, capable organization and the stage settings deserve no less than the work of the company. During the course of the play there is shown a circus with all

the equipment, such as clowns, bare

back riders, acrobats, ringmasters, horses, dogs, ponies, lights, noise and the smell of the sawdust ring.

This is the same production that played at the Liberty Theater, New York City, for one solid year to capacity business.

ATTENDANCE SHOWS 1 MARKED DECREASE! Charles F. Coffin, of Chicago, who I was clerk of Indiana Yearly Meeting j of Friends many years ago, and whoi

attended the most recent session, writing to this meeting says: "While at the clerk's table. I made a careful estimate of the average attendance of men on business days, as follows: 1878, 459; 1879. 500; 1880, 550; 1881, 610; 1883. 550. There were quite as many women as men In attendance. "It was my privilege to attend Indiana Yearly meeting again in 1910. I did not make a careful count then, but should thing the attendance of both men and women was not larger than that of men alone In the above account." Western Yearly Meeting had something of a similar experience for many years after it was first established. The large house was filled to overflowing, and large portions of the time the aisles were standing full of men. Recently, as I understand, onehalf of the house Is quite sufficient to accomodate them.

JULIA TIFFANY IS MARRIED SATURDAY (American News Service) New York, Dec 10. Of interest to society today was the wedding of Miss Julia DeForest Tiffany, daughter of Louis C. Tiffany, head of the weli known jewelry firm, and Gurdon Satterstall Parker, of Boston. The ceremony was performed at the Tiffany home In West Seventy-second street.

MORTON HAS GOOD WORD FOR TRUSTS Chicago, Dec. 10. "My observation has been where corporations ask or

receive more than they ought to have ' that it is only temporary and that they pay dearly iu the long run fox anything they get in the way of special privileges. Because railroads in the past may have done wrong in special cuases does not justify the public ia doing wrong to them now." ! With this statement Paul Morton. ' former secretary of the treasury, and ! now head of the Equitable Life Insur-, ance company cf New York. Saturday expressed his views on the apparently growing agitation for legislation regulating corporations and assertions of Gov-eiect Johnson of California, in New. York, Friday, that for the last ten years the country has been "protecting the corporations," while the

individual has become a "minus quantity."

CORN EXHIBITS BY YOUTHFUL FARMERS

Members of the Wayne county boys corn club brought in their exhibits on Saturday and left them with County Superintendent C. O. Williams where they will be on exhibition all next week. Next Saturday they will be judged by an expert. The grading which is given on the corn will be added to that given for culti-aticm and attention to their records. The total grade will be the basis on which the Purdue university officials will determine which fifty members of the club are entitled to free tuition at the short course at Purdue in the winter. There are a hundred and six members of the club and all arc expected to make an exhibit of ton cars.

"The Third Degree. The stories extant of how many of our millionaires of today were "grubstaked," and when fortune came a parallel In the case of Charles Klein, the playwright, whose plays, "The Lion and the Mouse," "The Music Master," "A Mile a Minute," "By Proxy," "A Paltry Million," "The District Attorney, Heartsease," "The Hon. John Grigsby," "Dr. Balgraf." "The Cipher Code," "The Auctioneer, "Daughters of Men," "The Step-Sister," "Red Feather" and "The Third Degree," have made him the richest playwright in the world. It has not been so many years ago that existence with Mr. Klein was literally a hand to mouth affair. He wanted to write plays, and Charles Dickson, . the comedian, suggested to his own brother, a tailor named Doblin, that he "stake" Klein; that he give him something like ten or fifteen dollars a week, just enough for himself and his family to live, on, and take half of all Klein's prospective profits from what plays he might write. This agreement was lived up to religiously by both Klein and Doblin. The budding playwright drew on the tailor from time to time for expenses, and the tailor kept an eye open for the possible success of his "Investment." In time the Klein plays began to be accepted, and before the five years, the

New Murray. Arthur Wilson presents Dainty Elsie Williams In a laughing musical mixup "Toysy Turvy Flats."

"Topsy Turvy Flats" Is a musical farce without much of a plot of any sort, but contains some bright comedy lines, some exceptionally pretty

girls and elegant costumes. Miss

Elsie Williams has the leading role

of the playlet-and does justice to it

She is a very sweet little woman and pretty and as graceful as a fawn.

The plot of the piece Is a general

mixup of two families of Smith's in

one Instance where one's husband is

absent from home; in another the

wife is away. They are all strangers,

thus the mixup begins as well as the fun. There are some pretty singing numbers Introduced during the action

of the play and they received such deserved applause. It is something out of the ordinary and is well worth see

ing.
