TO OBSERVE XUAS 0 SWMMMBIBMBMBMSS First Large Consignment of Christmas Trees Arrived in the City Today. (American New Service) New York, Dec. .The customary pine forest which never falls to appear at this season of the year sprung ap (n the vicinity of West street today, itb the arrival of the first large conilgnnieots of Christmas trees for the metropolis. ' It takes from 150 to 175 car loads of trees each year to supply Father Knickerbocker's children at Christmas. Most of them this year are Canadian trees, but many of the darkrr and more thickly follaged Norway ipruces are to be seen. The trees are Df all slses. Some are Just large enough to place upon a table. The general ran are about ten feet high snd the longest nearly forty feet. The latter are used chiefly for church display. The price of the trees this year is a Irlfle higher than last year. The rea-
m-
ton for this is that the Christmas tree supply Is not. as .prolific as It once tvas. Every year the searches for this annual luxury must venture further nd further into the northern wilds, further from civilization and further from -the railroads. Allied wlta the Christmas tree busi ness is the trade in holly, laurel and mistletoe.
