Statue of Baron Be Unveiled
(American News Service) Washington. D. C, Dec. 6. Delegations from German societies all over the United States will be present at Washington tomorrow to take part in the unveiling of the statue of Barou Steuben, the German officer wbo came to this county In 177S to assist General Washington in the war of the Revolution. There teems a strong probability that the ceremonies will overtop thote of any previous event of this kind at the capital. Secretary of War. Dickinton will preside at the unveiling and Representative Uartholdt will take a leading part. Mr. Uartholdt was the author of the legislation appropriating $50,000 for the niounment and author of the Inscription It will bear. He also was the author of the legislation appropriating $5,000 for a replica of the htattie to le presented to Kmperor William and th German Kmplre. The expectation is that the St. Louisan will be selected to present the replica to Kmperor William. It Is estimated fiat 10,000 persons will participate in the military and civic parade that will follow the unveiling ceremonies. The German singing societies will take an active part. Speeches will be made by President Taft, Count von llernstorff, the German Ambassador; Representative SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDENTS AWARDED The three high school students who took the examination for a scholarship to Chicago university at that institution about three weeks ago, made creditable showings, but were unsuccessful in their attempt for a scholarship. Steuben to at Washington
Bartholdt and President Hexamer of the German-American Alliance. Ma-Jor-General, William H. Carter, assistant chief of staff will be Major T. Allen, Eighth Cavalry. Baron Steuben's services were of inestimable value to tho disheartened revolutionary army w'jen he joined it at its winter camp at Valley Forge. Ita bopes were then at thejr lowest ebb; continuance of tbe struggle seemed futile, so it was with risins spirits that they welcomed this young officer who came to them fresh from a distinguished service under Frederick the Great, of Germany. Not only did he bring hope to the half starved forces under General Washington, but he remodeled tho organization of the troops, prepared a tnanuel of tactics and improved their discipline. Baron Steubea was, from the time he accepted the rank of Inspector General, n prominent figure in the fortunes of the revolution army. He sat at the court martial of Major Andre and took part, as a Ma jor General, in the siege of Yorktown. Major-General Guno von Steuben will attend the unveil'ng. said other members of the Stt'uben family had also been invited and some of them would undoubtedly attend. General Cuno von Steuben is a direct descendant of a brother of the Revolutionary hero. DR. LINDLEY TALKS Dr. Llcdley, formerly a resident of Richmond, who is head of the department of psychology of Indiana university, spoke at tbe high school at the Tuesday morning chapel exercises. AWARD PRIZES ON POSTER DESIGNS Awards for the best poster designs submitted at the Wayne county exhibit at the high school were given to Miss Amy Norton. Irst; Willard Kauffman, second, and Arthur Murray third. The prizes were given by Mrs. M. F. Johnston, president of the art association, including 13.00, $1.50 and $1.00 for first, second and third respectively. The judges were Miss Kathryn Rettig. Miss Ethel King and Miss Alice Locke.
