JONES SELECTED EARLHAMDEBATER The White Slave Traffic" to Be His Subject at InterCollegiate Event.
Thomas E. Jones, In a forceful oration, pleading for federal regulation of the white slave traffic, won the annual oratorical contest at Karlham college Saturday. Hugh Jenkins, peaking on "Our Duty and Universal Peace by Law" was awarded second place and Miss Isabelle Thomas, who spoke on "The Cry of the Children," was given third place. As a result of the contest last evening Mr. Jones will represent Earlham at the Intercollegiate oratorical contest at Indianapolis February 24. "The White Slave Traffic" was thoroughly analyzed and exposed in the oration by Mr. Jones. Its dangers to the Individual and the nation was effectively pointed out and the horrors of the traffic In women Impressed upon the audience. He spoke of the number engaged In the business In the larger cities, the profit of the traffic, and the close relationship between the saloon, the court and the police, which permit the business to flourish. The eCect of the sale and bondage of women on the home, marriage, the children and as the cause of Insanity, be said, was most noticeable. The subject matter Is entirely new for a college oration but was handled In a koen manner and ably discussed. His solution of the evils of the traffic was to besiege the legislators, to teach virtue In the public schools, place pamphlets In the bands of the parents, proclaim It from the pulpit and finally pass federal laws curbing its Interstate business. The oration awarded second place wag on peace, the subject which the
Rev. Levi Pennington won first placer
In the state and Interstate contests last year. - Mr. Jenkins's solution was to have a federation of the world In which all the nations should have representatives and whose decisions should be final.
FOR THE PUBLIC New Formula Cures Coughs, Colds, Bronchitis and Hoarseness In Five Hours. Much Is being done in these days to
stop the ravages of consumption, but probably nothing has been so effective
as teaching the public how to break up a cold and cure coughs, brinchltls, ton-
fcllltis, etc, with simple home-mixed
medicine. A laxative cough syrup, free from syrup, free from whiskey Is the prime need. A cough indicates infia-
mation and congestion and these in
turn are due to an excess of waste and poison in the system. A tonic laxative cough syrup rids the system of con
gestion, while relieving the painful
coughing. Get the following ana mix
at home: One-half ounce fluid wild cherry bark, one ounce compound essence cardiol and three ounces syrup white pine compound. Shake the bottle and take twenty drops every half hour for four hours. Then one-half to one teaspoonful three or four times dally. Give children less, according to age. Cut this out and save it for some friend.
have heard many stories of the appeal it has made to those who might otherwise take the easiest way. I think Mr. Belasco deserves the highest credit from theater-goers for producing "The Easiest Way." His genius dominates It Someone had said, 'talent Is patience,' and I don't think anyone is a better example of that than Mr. Belasco. People rave over what they call a 'Belasco success,' but they don't know the weeks of labor, the consideration given every small point, that precedes Mr. Belasco's success. His patience Is wonderful, and while he is a hard task master in that he makes us work hard in rehearsal and won't be content with any but the very best from us. he is so kind In so many ways that his companies are devoted to him and try to give what he expects from them."

Howe's Travel Pictures. Lyman II. Howe's Travel Festival at the Oennett theater bears the same relation to the sense of sight that Grand Opera does to sound. Consequently, It well deserves the title of "The Grand Opera of Travel."
MThe Third Degree." The" third degree system of extorting evidence and confessions by the means of sweating, dates back to before the Christian era. It was used extensively by Ferdinand and Isabelle when Columbus was promoting his first voyage and has since been a powerful weapon to the police of every large city. Charles Klein's play "The Third Degree," is the first attack ever made on a system. And will be seen at the Gennett theater on Thursday, December 15th.
"The Easiest Way.
. Miss Frances Starr, who appears at
the Gennett tonight in Eugene Wal
ter'a play. "The Easiest Way," has
very decided opinions. Naturally there
has been a great deal of discussion
over so straight forward and realistic play as "The Easiest Way." It Is just the sort of play that creates discussion. Miss Starr was recently asked if she was interested in the play became of ita value as a dramatic work, or because of any moral lesson that It
might convey. To this she replied
"Well, you know there is so doubt of the value of Mr. Walter's play from a dramatic standpoint. There may be things in it of which some people do not approve, but dramatically- it is splendid. Then I appreciate it because.
while some like it intensely and some dislike it Intensely, it is not a medio
cre thing that can be Ignored or plac
ed in the category with the 'nice little plays' that stand for nothing at all. It is a decided play, and I like both plays and people to bo decided I either like persons a gread deal or I dislike them a great deal, and Indifference I have no use for. . "However the moral effect of the play cannot help but appeal to me, for I have had letters from girls, and

ABE MARTIN VINS HORSEJEAL CASE
Gets $75 Damages from Dav
id Harum, Who Sold a Horse with Heaves.
TO BE JORGAIIIZED Is Oldest Fraternal Insurance Company.
The "David Harum" of Union coun
ty probably was stung in his first horse deal on Saturday and "Abe Mar
tin's" double, also of the same ronn-
ty did the stinging, to the merry tune of $73 and court costs. It was an
other one of the unexpected reports
of a Wayne county jury.
John Redd, a farmer, living near
Brownsville, was the complainant
while James Gregory, a Junk, horse
and general all round trader, was the defendant. The suit was on a breach of warranty. Redd seeking a hundred
dollars damages. The horse, which
was involved, was purchased by Redd
from Gregory last Anril for a hunriroi
dollars. The horse was purchased on!
the representation that it was sound.
However Kedd averred it had the heaves so badly it could not work nor walk a considerable distance. Gregory claimed the horse got in this condition every time it was worked be
cause the collar which It wore was
four Inches too small.
The case was started on Thursday afternoon and the arguments were
made on Saturday. The Jury was out about six hours, there being some of
the jurors who held out for a hundred
dollars' damages. This is the second victory which "Abe Martin" has won in tbe case. Last spring he sued Gregory in the justice of the peace court at Liberty. He won. Gregory took an appeal to the Union county circuit court and on a change of venue was taken to the Wayne circuit court.

Weighing Odors. It was the Italian physician Salrioni who 'devised a microbalance of such extreme delicacy that it clearly demonstrated the loss of weight of musk by volatlxatlon. Thus the invisible perfume floating off in the air is indirectly weighed. The essential part of the apparatus is a very thin thread of glass fixed at one end and extended horizontally. Tbe microscopic objects to be weighed are placed upon the glass thread near its free end, and the amount of flexure product Is observed with a microscope magnifying 100 diameters. A mote weighing one-thousandth of a milligram is said perceptibly to bend the thread. New York Herald.

A court decision was finally returned in favor of the supreme lodge and now the representatives of the several 6tates have coma together to make an amicable arrangement and to decide upon such changes in the laws of the order as may be deemed necessary to meet the objections of the grand lodges and to restore the order to that condition of prosperity which it has enjoyed in the past.
