PUDLICATIOII OF ALL FUflDS GIVEN To Both Parties Will Be Made by Congressional Chairmen.
LANDSLIDE EVIDENCE
Is the Great Amount of Mail Received for Democratic Congressmen.
BY RODERICK CLIFFORD. Washington, Nov. 26. Just to remind the many political reformers, who for some years were knocking at ihe congressional doors for legislation to correct the abuse growing; out of political campaign contributions. It will bo interesting to watch for the rt ports on Dec. 8, of the chairmen of the several campaign committees, making public. In accordance with the campaign fund publicity toil, which was signed by President Tali, June 25, the contributions received from various sources. The report will unquestionably prove Interesting In view of the many stories printed about the large sums contributed by the corporations and others to down the new policy of "New Nationalism; and, it might also be added, the sums contributed by the advocates of that doctrine. Members of the congressional com. mittees express the opinion that the
publicity law will fall to meet the ex
pectation of its advocates, and in that the report of the money contributed toward the expenses of tho campaign will be far short of the amount which
the newspapers have from time to
time asserted have been contributed. Should this prove to be the case it is believed by the advocates of the publicity law that public sentiment will
be so aroused that congress will respond with an amendment making It
compulsory to publish contributions before the elections. This provision was in the bill when It first passed the house, but the senate knocked it out, and the house, in order to get anything, was forced to accept the senate amendment.
the sympathetic strike. It was not only the express companies and the employes who suffered because of the strike, but it was the public generally that suffered, and was made to endure hardships. Jt Is believed by advocates of the parcels post system that one effect of the recent express strike win be to remove some of the opposition of the
small country merchant to the parcels
pout bill, which is to come up before the house committee on postofflces
and nostroads early next month. The committee last session heard much testimony In favor of the measure that
had been recommended by the administration, but It had to give way for the poHtal savings bank, on which President Taft had set his heart. The postofflce department is prepared to show. It is said, that a parcels post would prove Belf-sustaining from the very beginning and would go a long way toward placing the department on a satisfactory financial basis.
Worry Is the mother or sick, nervous and troubled mentality; upsets the entire physical system. The body Is a network of nerves. Hollister's Hocky Mountain Tea soothes and freshens the entire system. Try it tonight Conkey Drug Co.
Signs of a Landslide. "Did we have a landslide! Well, If you doubt It take a look at this mail," remarked an employe of the house postofflce, as he pointed to a dozen sacks of mail that had Just arrived. The mall was from every section of the country and the larger part of it for Democratic members. "You see." said the veteran employe, "the constituent! of the members are fully alive to the fact that a re-organi-satlon of the house occasioned by a change In the political complexion, means a new deal and a distribution of the good things which have for the past 18 years been enjoyed by the Republicans. It Is only natural that the Democrats should lose no time In making known to their members what legislation, etc.. they favor. Not since the Republicans carried the house In 1S94 has the mall just after an etetclon been so heavy as now. N "You may depend on It that the pressure on the Democrats for office here at the capital will be something fierce. Of course, the older members, those who have seen several terms of service, will have the biggest pull, but the member-elect who knows any politics at all, especially the game con nected with the house organization, will be able to land one or two small places for his constituents. But there are exceptions as you will note If you run over the list of employes. You will
find more than a dozen fellows hold
ing good positions who have been here more than 30 years. What Is the explanation? Why they mado friends on both sides of the house, and thus "grew Into the places."
The newspaper stories to the effect
that there may be an extra session are In a measure, responsible for the unusually heavy mall thus far in advance of the opening of the session.
They Smile Knowingly. .
Treasury officials smile knowingly these days when they tell their friends
that the prohibition wave Is receding,
Asked for an explanation they take up the dally treasury statement and point to the growing Internal revenue receipts. This time one year ago,
-before the country had taken any In
terest In the campaign, and when the prohibitionists were doing missionary work, receipts from Internal, revenue from -the first four and a half months
of the fiscal year were In round num
bers, $98,000,000. For the same period of this fiscal year, the receipts are
$110,000,000 In round numbers. This
la proof positive that the consumption of liquor Is Increasing. Indeed the
Increase In Internal revenue Is climb
ing at such a rate that unless our lm
ports take a sudden rise the Internal
revenue will be crowding custom re
ceipts for first place. Last year cus
toms exceeded Internal revenue by $27,000,000 while for the same period this year there Is but $19,000,000 In
favor of customs.
Parcel Post Legislation.
The recent express strike In New York and New Jersey, which at one time threatened to spread throughout
the United States, has encouraged the postofflce department officials to be
lieve that congress, at the coming
session will give careful consideration
to tho recommendation of the post
master general for legislation that will
permit the department to make a
trial of the parcel post system. A
prominent postofflce official said the
other, day that the great express strike
n New York city had proved an obct lesson that cannot but have Its influence on congress. It showed Just what could be expected if organized labor In the various trades, had yield
ADDITIONAL MUSIC
JANET SPENCER A STORY. Janet Spencer, who was heard in
this city laHt year is gaining in popularity and the following from the
Musical Courier will Interest musicians;
Ikmton recently had the advantage
of hearing one of the renowned American singers, who pleased. the audience there, as she does in New York and everywhere, through the intelligence which she applies to the beautiful quality of her voice and Its usefulness. Miss Spencer sings every thing from
Bach to the latest American. For in
stance, the Boston Advertiser said, In its Issue of November 11, that "she
succeeded in presenting the spirit of each nationality. That Is In itself a
remarkable gift, the gift of transfer
ring oneself as an artist from one's
own nationality to that which is fore ign to one's birth and training.
The Transcript, another Boston pa
per whose critic is also distinguished
for his keen Judgment and his knowl
edge, speaking of her voice, sf vs that It Is "warm, pliant and expressive, and
her lower tones have the true contral
to richness without thickness or clum
siness. The difficulty with a contralto
voice always has been thickness and
clumsiness of utterance. It seems that
the lower vibrations, before they can
reach the air, are, with contraltos, en
cumbered through Involved applica
tions of the breathing method. This has been overcome completely by Miss
Spencer.
The Boston Traveller expresses In
one sentence something which applies
to every one who has reached an ar
tistic elevation: "Janet Spencer loves to sing. This critic also says that Miss Spencer gets at the heart of a
mood. Nothing is really more dlffi
cult than to get at the heart of a mood, unless one really has the ability of extracting out of the musical com
position its poetic character of Its dramatic character, or whatever that
mood may be.
There are many good American sing
ers today, but Janet Spencer has a
record that manes every one engagea
in the musical art proud of her as an
artist who understands, far deeper
than is usually the case, the true sig
nificance of music as applied to the vocal art and the true significance of
the vocal art as applied to music.
