CIIILOREIMMPBOVE In One Week in Washington's Open Air School.
Washington, Nov. 23. The open-air school in the fourth grade of the Blake public school has become the envy and desire of all Washington school children. Miss Sue Gardner, its clever teacher, who persuaded the board of education to permit the experiment. Is daily besieged by applicants for entrance.' - The school has been In existence only a week, but In that time a decided Improvement has been noted In the 35 children who are making 'the test Before the work began the children were weighed and measured by the health officer of the district and a weekly record win be kept of their growth. MWe have not once had heat in our room this year." said Miss Gardner. "Therefore the children are really injured to a low temperature already. It is any intention to keep a temperature' of 40 degrees most of the time and under no circumstances will I let it rise above 60 degrees the whole winter." But even wide-open windows and chilly wind cannot freeze the children, for each is wrapped in a big blanket and frequent exercises keep the blood in circulation. Parents are required to furnish the children with heavy underwear and stout top coats In addition. Each child attending Miss Gardner's grade pays his or her three cents a day for the hot milk, soup or cocoa, and the deficit in the treasury of the open-air school as the result of the low price put upon the hot beverages will be made up by friends of the open-air school movement. Miss Gardner, who obtained permission from the board of education to conduct the school, 13 an ardent young sportswoman and athlete. She is an expert tennis and basket ball player and attributes her own physical wellbeing to open-air exercise. A t Local Theaters A th? Murray. - The Girlin the Taxi - Interest runs high in the forthcoming appearance in this city of that wonderfully successful and highly entertaining Parisian sensation. "The Girl in the Taxi." which is scheduled for the Gennett theater next Monday. The record achieved by this play is an enviable one. Produced in Chicago it scored an unqualified triumph and settled itself firmly in the hearts of the theater going public as the greatest and most diverting piece ever brought out in the western metropolis. For 300 nights it proved a potent magnet to crowd the theater to the doors j and it might be running there yet but for contracts which demanded its presentation in Boston at a certain date. "The Girl in the Taxi' "went from Chicago to Boston and repeated its phenomenal success. For three solid months it caused the erudite amusement lover of that city to forget their books and to give themselves up to the overwhelming and altogether delightful charms of the fascinating lady who forms the, pivot of the play around which her band of admirers scamper for her favors. "The Girl in the Taxi" should not be missed. Its like will not soon be seen on the local boards. There is one clergyman to every two thousand persons in London. FLEES FROM MOTHER TO MARRY LOVER Baltimore, Ohio, Nov. 23. Learning that Miss Margaret Callahan is crossing the continent aa fast as the fastest trains will carry her to meet the man of her choice in' Utah, her mother. Mrs. Winifred Kesterson today sought the aid of a lawyer and the police to try
and head off the'girl and prevent the marriage. Although the girl has one day's start in the race, her mother, almost erased at the thought of the marriage, which she has opposed, has promised to pay all expense of the police in this city and other cities along the route to intercept the girl. - She swore out a warrant today charging her daughter with being incorrigible, her attorney explaining that such a charge was necessary in order to give the police of other cties a legal right to detain the girl. Miss Callahan gave no inkling of her intention to leave the .city when she started from home yesterday, ostensibly to go to wprk. But when she did not return home and her mother learned that she had not been to her place of employment, Mrs. Kesterson went to Miss Katharine Burns, a close personal friend of the girl. , Although Miss Burns had promised not to divulge the confidence of Miss Callahan, the mother insisted so persistently that finally Miss Burns did tell the whole story. CHICKENS TO TAKE PLACE OF TURKEYS
Terre Haute, Ind.. Nov. 23. Terre Haute commission houses say the high prices 'of meats the last few months started thousands of persons to rais ing chickens. In cities like Terre Haute a surprisingly large number of people have a chicken yard. There has been a heavy demand for chicken feed, incubators, etc.. but even at that the day of low prices for eggs is passed, .because their consumption has been more than trebled, dealers say. Commission men say. that prices will not go soaring this winter as they did a year ago. , The cold Btorage concerns have 10 per cent more eggs than a year ago, and they have only until February to sell them,, so that there should be little fluctuation in prices.
